After much speculation and encouragement, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced Sunday he will seek the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin governor.
The announcement came at a time when the Democrats were without a major candidate, as former candidate Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton left the race last month for “personal reasons.”
In a statement released Sunday, Barrett said he is running for governor because the state’s problems need a “common sense approach.”
“I am running for governor because we can build a strong economy, protect what is important, and create a great future for ourselves and our children,” Barrett said in the statement.
Barrett said he delayed the decision to run as a result of the assault he sustained at the Wisconsin State Fair, when he was attacked while trying to break up a domestic dispute.
Barrett also elaborated on his experiences as mayor of Milwaukee and how he has already faced problems like decreased revenue, poor business climate, a downward economy and failing schools.
“These are the challenges I work on every single day. These are the issues I’m ready to tackle statewide,” Barrett said. “I am committed to breaking through ideological walls and breaking down the old and tired political boundaries.”
Gov. Jim Doyle, who declined a third term in office in June and opened the race for competitors on both sides, praised Barrett’s accomplishments in a statement released Sunday.
“Tom Barrett has demonstrated he is a strong leader for Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin,” Doyle said in the statement. “With a strong record of job creation in Milwaukee, he will be an outstanding governor focused on helping Wisconsin rebuild from the recession.”
Bruce Pfaff, spokesperson for Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Congressman Mark Neumann, said Barrett’s candidacy does not have a significant impact on the Neumann campaign.
“We have said all along it’s not about who is in race but who has the best ideas to move the state forward,” Pfaff said. “Mark has a plan and it doesn’t really matter who else is in the race.”
Pfaff added the race is coming down to those who are “career politicians,” and those like Neumann who have both public service and business experience.
Keith Gilkes, campaign manager for Milwaukee County Executive and Republican candidate Scott Walker, blasted Barrett’s experience in a statement released Sunday.
“If you like the big spending, big taxing policies of Jim Doyle, then you’ll love Mayor Tom Barrett,” Gilkes said. “Barrett, aka Tom the Taxer, has been for big spending and big taxes at every step of his career from his time in the State Senate … and now as mayor of Milwaukee where he has increased city taxes by tens of millions of dollars.”
Asher Heimermann, a Sheboygan high schooler responsible for the candidate drafting group “Wisconsin for Tom Barrett,” said the group is very pleased with Barrett’s decision and looks forward to having contact with the campaign in the future.
Heimermann added the group is selling T-shirts touting Barrett’s candidacy on its website and plans to give the profits to the campaign.

No thanks, I’d rather have someone like Tommy Thompson running the show. Wisconsin’s economy was in much, much better shape back then. With a Democrat, we’ll keep on suffering from a shitty economy, higher and higher taxes, impossibly high unemployment and more job loss throughout the state. Man cannot live by cheese alone. Need some beer to wash it down too.

Tom Barrett has proved time and time again that he will be a tax and spend democrat. Even in his speech for his announcement, he changed some of the words from saying that he “will not raise taxes” to he wants “fair taxes.” What does that mean? Sounds like Jim Doyle all over again! Scott Walker has a proven record of cutting spending and not raising taxes. While Walker has kept the property tax levy the same for the past 8 years in Milwaukee County, Tom the Taxer has raised taxes by the millions every year. I don’t want four more years of the same old policies. They don’t work, and we need someone who will change that. Scott Walker is the candidate for Wisconsin that will keep taxes low, cut spending, and promote private business!

I think the fact that Diamond Jim Doyle endorsed Barrett is enough reason to vote for a Republican. It’s quite clear that Barrett wants to expand the failing Wisconsin government, while Walker wants to cut spending and useless programs that have lead to Wisconsin having the largest budget deficit per capita of any state in the Union. One might wonder how this happens, but with Doyle as governor for six years, anything can happen. This problem can’t be blamed on the recession because it’s been happening for six years. Any analysis of Walker and Barrett will lead voters to the conclusion that we can’t afford another Jim Doyle, it’s the last thing Wisconsin needs. Walker is the one responsible for any job growth in Milwaukee, not Barrett. Barrett, Doyle, and their democratic cronies have forced jobs outside Wisconsin and have made owning a business in Wisconsin a chore. We cannot afford Barrett to increase taxes by 10% for the entire state, like he did in Milwaukee. Milwaukee is currently one of the worst places to live in the nation and if Barrett is elected governor, Wisconsin will be too.

Wisconsin had a huge deficit before Doyle FYI

The only reason Barrett finally agreed to run was that he’s pretty sure he’s gonna lose anyway. That’s why no other Democrats want to run, they see the election as unwinable. I’m sure Obama laid on him hard, maybe offered him a job where he could stay in Milwaukee if he loses. Though he won’t have any problem staying mayor for another 20 years if he wants. Milwaukee mayors have always been around a long long time.
Barrett’s advantages: he’d get huge support from Milwaukee area, the most populous part of the state. He’s the only Democrat running.
Barrett’s negatives: Walker will also get big support from metro Milwaukee area. The rest of the state (excluding Dane co) will go republican. 2010 is gonna be a loser year for Dems across the country. Doyle has left a disastrous legacy for the Democrats, how is Barrett going to distinguish himself from that? Doyle is endorsing him! Barrett has nothing to show for being Mayor of Milwaukee except hiring a new police chief that’s been mildly successful at stabilizing crime. He’s raised taxes every year, raised fees even more (garbage fee, snow and ice fee, $20 wheel tax) all to plug budget holes that just get bigger. He’s brought no jobs to Milwaukee, though all he ever says is jobs are his #1 priority. The Milwaukee budget is still a total mess, with another tax hike coming soon this year. MPS is a train wreck, which they blame on not getting more state funding….hmmm, that’s gonna go over well with the rest of the state who thinks Milwaukee already gets too much state cash thats just flushed down the toilet of MPS.
Truth is he never wanted to be mayor, it was just there as a consolation prize after he lost in the Dem gov primary. Also Barrett’s kids are all teen aged, he doesn’t want to move his family to Madison, and he wants to spend time with his family, not working his ass off in the capital. Gov is a 80hr/week job, lots of travel. He just got beat up with a tire iron, his right hand is permanently screwed up, I think he just wants to go quietly into retirement. But he’s gonna take one for the team here because embarrassingly no other Democrats want to run (except crackpots and morons like Lawton), so at least Walker won’t win with 70% of the vote.

The only thing Barrett has going for him is that he got beat-up trying to help someone. Honorable as it may, it won’t win him the election. Wisconsin has suffered too much under the reign of Sir Doyle—jobs have left the state at unprecedented numbers due to the policies that have pushed businesses out of state. Milwaukee, Barrett’s current fiefdom, has on a downward spiral for years and he hasn’t done anything to reverse that trend, only accelerated it. At least Walker, since taking his position in Milwaukee, turned a deficit to a surplus. How? He’s a tough tax-cutter who isn’t afraid to make tough decisions. Barrett, I’m afraid, was coxed into running by his friend and our President Barry. The Prez should have learned from campaigning in New Jersey and Virginia on behalf of Democratic candidates that his sway wasn’t the same as it was a year ago. As the bard Bob Dylan once sang, “The times are a changing.” Walker for Governor.

^Talk about spamming^
Nothing like a shameless plug. Surprising that a Democrat is supporting the purchasing of t-shirts. I didn’t know liberals support capitalism…
