In response to racist and threatening graffiti in a University of Wisconsin-River Falls bathroom, university community members banded together through rallies, discussions and demonstrations Monday to show their support for diversity.
The graffiti, which singles out two ethnic groups, was found in the Chalmer Davee Library on the UW-River Falls campus Oct. 25.
Craig Morris, chief diversity officer at UW-River Falls, said while there have been other incidents of hate expression aimed at various communities on campus, none have been as specific or deliberate as this graffiti.
According to UW-River Falls spokesperson Kevin Harter, the perpetrator of the graffiti has not been identified.
“It’s an open investigation between the city of River Falls Police Department and by the campus police department,” Harter said. “If it was determined that a student was responsible for it, they would be prosecuted for a hate crime and face consequences up to expulsion.”
The graffiti, which read: “The time of destruction is near. Blacks + Asians 11-02-09,” brought the UW-River Falls together as a community, Harter said.
“Many students wore red for unity and the solidarity march [Monday]. Facebook groups and boards in the student union took student concerns and comments about the graffiti,” Harter said. “It’s been positive for the campus to galvanize and come together like this.”
To support the solidarity march, the UW-River Falls bookstore offered a 20 percent in-store discount on red shirts Friday through Monday, according to the UW-River Falls website.
Harter noted the UW-River Falls Chancellor Dean Van Galen met with the Black Student Union and the Asian Student Union last week, and e-mails and newsletters were also sent out to campus staff.
The chancellor addressed nearly 300 students along with faculty and staff Monday, and referred to the racist graffiti as a cowardly act, Harter noted.
Harter said extra security precautions and surveillance were also taken.
Student groups also coordinated a rally with student speakers and a unity march of solidarity at noon Monday, Harter said.
“Most students and faculty send a strong, clear message that this campus does not tolerate a negative, racist act. There’s a clear sign that students are coming together — not just colored students but all students,” Harter said. “We feel that Sunday in the campus bathroom may have reflected the attitude of that one person but no one else on campus.”
Morris encouraged any student with negative, racial sentiments to seek help.
“If a student is expressing these sentiments, it is a strong indication they will continue it,” Morris said. “If they come to terms with the behavior, counseling will certainly help.”
In preventing future bias incidents, Morris said the first step is to raise awareness and exposure to the situation.
Another way of examining the racial climate at UW-River Falls is the Campus Climate Assessment.
“[The Assessment is] for students to confidentially express their sentiments on four UW campuses this year that the [UW System] Board of Regents is sanctioning,” Morris said.

I hate to say this, but is there a possibility that the perpetrator is in fact a member of one of the targeted racial groups? Sadly enough, this sort of thing has happened before.

Unfortunately no one will ever know. If it singles out these two races then automatically one race is assumed the perpetrator. Guess which one.

I am actually a student at River Falls, and regardless of who did it, there have been problems with this before. Last year in the Agricultural Building there was racial graffiti on one of the bulletin boards. I’m glad to see them finally organize something and do something about it, unfortunately I was not able to be there when it happened.

in a country w/a black president, where we spent much of 2009 mourning a black singer, whose best golfer is a self-professed ‘cablanasian’, where Hootie now sings country-western … it must comfort the remaining racists to know that they still have the ‘ag building bulletin board’.
i’m sorry, too easy. big ups to the large majority of FFA kids who are neither racist nor defacing bulletin boards.

I like how hypocritical the campus is. They talk all about unity and such, but then they still have blatant separation through the, most likely, university sponsored “Black Student Union and Asian Student Union”. Where’s the Caucasian student union? Not that I have anything against diversity, but these organizations seem so counterproductive.

Foolishness. The reason there are no Caucasian student unions is because white people feel the need to group themselves together. Considering this state’s background, you would think that nearly every UW school would have at least a German, Irish and Polish student org, but outside of UW-Milwaukee, I don’t believe any others do.

I love how it is assumed that this is a ‘threat’- typical reaction of old, white, administrator types- who respond w/diversity marches. My first instinct on reading this was that there was some african-american/asian-american group party or something on campus. Try inserting sig-eps for ‘blacks’, and tri-delts for ‘asians’. BTW, for those of you who don’t interact with them, african-americans do sometimes refer to themselves as ‘black’ and asian-americans as ‘asian’.
Maybe this WAS a horrible racist threat from some white dude. The wording makes me doubt it; to me, it makes much more sense as a pro-black/asian statement than anti. Fortunately, we have the UWRF chancellor to interpret it for us- cowardly racist graffiti. Requiring extra security precautions and surveillance. And necessitating meetings of the black and asian student unions with the chancellor.
In a sense, the black and asian students remain victims, unfortunately- they have to attend meetings to listen to this joker tell them how upset and threatened they should feel, rather than studying, or partying, or just NOT sitting in some administrator’s office for an hour. Plus, I guarantee these student groups were strongly encouraged to attend these lectures, rallies, etc etc etc, so the administration can prove just how unified the campus is.
Moral of the story: minority groups should NOT advertise parties, get-togethers, etc in any way that can be misinterpreted by old, white, bored administration-type people. Wait, who were the racists here, exactly?

“Caucasion student union”…?
Are you serious? I think you would be hard pressed to find such a group in any University.

Umm, why is this a big deal? There is racist graffiti in half the bathrooms in University buildings here too. Is it really shocking to find there are expressive racists out there? Yeesh.

“The time of destruction is near. Blacks + Asians 11-02-09”
Oh my god, would you look at the above sentence? Looks like another “hate crime.” First of all, what does it even mean?
Second, if the words were:
“The time of destruction is near. Caucasians 11-02-09”
you wouldn’t be reading about it in the paper.
Third, the only crime committed was destruction of property.

I am a UWRF alum, and there are a few things that many of you are missing:
1) For those of you who make the point that there are no Caucasian student unions and that this would not make headlines if Black + Asian was replaced with Caucasians, your point (assuming it were truth - which I do not) proves nothing other than that you have either not taken or done quite poorly in History and Sociology. Anyone who knows anything about Sociology and Student Development Theory knows why these organizations are essential, and your reasoning about modern equality is sophmoric.
2) The reason that this is an issue pertains to another fairly recent specific threat graffiti within that same campus community. It is crazy that there are people who look at these incidents and find the reaction overblown.

“Anyone who knows anything about Sociology and Student Development Theory knows why these organizations are essential, and your reasoning about modern equality is sophmoric.”
Anyone who has taken elementary logic knows that this is an ad hominem fallacy.
