MILWAUKEE (AP) — The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents has delayed its approval of revisions to the student code of conduct.

The board’s education committee met Thursday at UW-Milwaukee but delayed until June voting on a plan that would give universities the authority to punish students for off-campus misconduct.

As currently written, the plan would allow students to hire lawyers to represent them during disciplinary hearings.

Regents and student affairs officials from UW campuses raised concerns about the role lawyers would play in cross-examining victims of crimes such as rape and assault.

The committee asked the UW System to clarify the role of attorneys and to research how many cases of misconduct it handles.
