The Sigma Chi fraternity has been suspended by the University of Wisconsin’s Committee on Student Organizations as the group is investigated for an “alleged alcohol related incident” on April 2.

The suspension forbids the fraternity from holding events and reserving space on campus. If found responsible, the chapter could face several different sanctions from CSO, as could individual members.

UW spokesperson John Lucas said the incident continued into the early hours of April 3, but could offer no further information.

Lucas said the suspension had nothing to do with the allegations of sexual assault published in The Badger Herald last month.

“This doesn’t have a bearing on anything [the Herald] has reported on in the past,” Lucas said.

Below is the statement from University Communications. Lucas said it is unlikely UW will reveal anything further until after the investigation is concluded.

According to the Student Organization Office’s website, investigations are usually concluded within ten days.

Pick up a copy of tomorrow’s Herald for the full story.

From University of Wisconsin Communications:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Committee on Student Organizations has suspended the university’s Sigma Chi fraternity chapter, 221 Langdon St., for an alleged alcohol-related violation on April 2.

Further details are not available, pending the completion of an investigation.

A suspension prevents a student organization from holding events, reserving space or enjoying the other privileges of student organization status.

The investigation will likely be conducted by the Offices of the Dean of Students on behalf of the Committee on Student Organizations.

If an organization is found in violation of breaching the Student Organization and/or University Code of Conduct, sanctions are possible for both the organization as a whole and/or individual members.

they should’ve gotten suspended for the whole rape incident a long time ago..

Good riddance for now.

After the rape allegations came out, I bet UW was just waiting around for them to fuck up and now they’ll punish them very, very harshly. Given the nature of those rape allegations, and the fact the victim didn’t want to file a formal complaint, this was probably an appropriate course of action.

How can a group not officially charged with any misconduct get suspended from campus? I am not saying the rape allegations are true or not true, but it still is within reasonable doubt that any members of this fraternity had anything to do with the incident, and the police have made no charges. I am interested to hear what the reason behind their suspension is.

less frats the better. everyone needs to grow up a little

this is the stupidest allegation of all time. that is all.

frats get in trouble for drinking violations all the time. i think every big frat is in trouble for drinking/partying violations right now. this is dumb that for some reason this is front page news

This is getting rediculous…In light of Sigma Chi holding a charity event which raised thousands of dollars, it didnt take more than 2 weeks for them to be attacked by the badger herald again. When are these reporters going to learn about some responsible journalism? And when is the deans office going to learn that punishing an organization based on an anonymous accusation isn’t just, fair or appropriate? The Deans as well as the Badger Herald disgust me.

dice

i agree, FEWER frats would be better. Also it was an alleged rape you dunce.

Sigma Chi just raised THOUSANDS of dollars for charity last week. Why is that not news? Why is it that the BH is rushing to throw this ‘article’ as front page breaking news when the Cardinal isn’t doing so? Since when does a fraternity’s alcohol violation deserve to be a top headline? Pretty sure the majority of frats on campus are on probation now for drinking violations. Seriously, BH, it is obvious you have a vendetta against this house, and that you lack some serious journalistic integrity. This is pathetic. You’re a newspaper, so why don’t you go cover some news?

7:17 pm, since you’re clearly a member of Sigma Chi, did you even attempt to contact the Herald or Cardinal about the event? If you don’t send them a press release, they don’t know about it, and can’t decide whether or not to cover it. Ever hear of PR? You guys obviously struggle with it.

And how is this not news? You people are very, very dumb. The end.

“This is getting rediculous…In light of Sigma Chi holding a charity event which raised thousands of dollars, it didnt take more than 2 weeks for them to be attacked by the badger herald again.”

They did charity. Whoop-de-freakin’ do. There is no great cosmic balance saying, “You raised a bunch of money for charity, so if you go and do something stupid and against the rules, that’s okay because we’ll just balance it out.” Life doesn’t work like that.

The fact of the matter is they SCREWED UP. They were already under a microscope because of the rape allegation (whether they did it or not), so when they feel that they can go and keep attracting attention, it should surprise no one that the administration will come down on them.

And it was not an anonymous allegation. The administration is merely not releasing the name, which it is well within its rights to do.

“Sigma Chi just raised THOUSANDS of dollars for charity last week. Why is that not news?”

Let’s see…newspapers can only succeed by attracting readers. Though I don’t like it, more readers are attracted to the juicy stories about crime and stuff like that than adopting puppies. “If it bleeds, it leads,” as the saying goes.

Also, when the Greek community as a whole prides itself on the charity work that they do (and rightly so, for even the smallest charity is good), and constantly reminds people of all the charity work they do (for which there is really no need- their actions should speak for themselves), then the public expects charity work from its Greeks! So, when a fraternity does what the public expects it to do, it’s not news! It’d be like reporting that the power plant delivered electricity to all its customers. Who cares? When the power plant fails to deliver power to a portion of a city, then that becomes news.

Do you want to make news related to charity? Either donate a million dollars to build a school or something (that is unusual and newsworthy), or refuse to raise charity for a year. I guarantee the reporters will come storming to your door.

  1. They aren’t suspended for the rape allegations.
  2. I first read about this story on Channel 3’s website, so don’t think it’s just the badger herald that cares about this story. http://www.channel3000.com/news/19170352/detail.html

Suspended plus rape allegations. ownt LMFAo

No rape ever happened at Sigma Chi. Until the law says otherwise, they’ve done nothing wrong. Every frat gets in trouble for drinking every now and then, is it considered breaking news?

this is sam macdonalds fault…

the alleged drinking violation is completely incorrect, and will be proven so. sigma chi just raised more money than any other chapter on campus has so far this year, and did so in an appropriate manner. hundreds of people throughout the greek community participated, and it was an overwhelming success.

instead of being attacked by false claims, these boys should be commended for their contributions to community service and ability to reach out throughout the greek system. furthermore, the school needs to stop listening to false accusations and gather evidence before they make such decisions. it is clear that a few select students are out to get the sigma chi boys and are willing to make things up to incriminate them; therefore, the school needs to recognize this and not make a mockery of the situation. when it’s all said and done, it will be the school who looks bad for incorrectly punishing an entire association whose one goal was to raise money for charity. fyi, they succeeded…in a big way.

the douglar strikes again…

i said, puckkk youuuu miss

fewer frats would be better? go ride a fixie, dumb hipster.

waah waaaaahhhhh

it’s funny, this drinking violation probably occurred for their Derby Days philanthropy. suckers.

The BH is a joke

It’s great that Sigma Chi raised money for charity - those directly involved should be proud of themselves. However, as many have stated, that does not give them a “get out of jail free” card. If the allegations are true, Sigma Chi and its members should face the same punishment anybody else would get.

Wow BH.. Real Fucking Original. Next Topic Please..

anyone who drinks at a fraternity (including members) should go to prison

THE BH HAS A VENDETTA AGAINST SIG CHI. THE BH IS SUCH A JOKE. THIS IS NOT BREAKING NEWS. THEY HAVE A VENDETTA AGAINST US, I MEAN SIG CHI. WE, I MEAN SIG CHI, RAISED MONEY FOR CHARITY — BUT NOOOO, IT’S SIG CHI’S GETTING SUSPENDED THAT’S “NEWS.” WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!

Mommy and Daddy help you raise that money? Congrats “men”

I agree that this is not necessary for the front page article of tomorrow’s paper. By placing this on the front page of tomorrow’s paper the paper is causing readers to establish a connection between the two stories when the incidents are not related. Rather, this incident is completely seperate from the rape allegations that occurred weeks ago. Many fraternities and sororities have had incidents with alcohol in the past and by placing this as the front story and placing these boys once again in the forefront of discussion, it only appears that the paper is just creating a scapegoat for their reader’s attention.

sigma chi- you need to get your act straight. if you guys didnt do anything wrong, whats there to worry about, defend your claim until you are proved not guilty. instead of bitching at the herald why dont you like go to the cardinal to give them your story. youll start some kind of drama, but at least someone is listening to you.

just like what that other guy said, handle your pr responsibly. dont just do a bunch of crying on the articles message board.

and im hoping that im wrong that you guys are just crying over an articles message board. i hope that there is more that you guys are doing to prove you uys not guilty. frats are not a bad thing, they help raise money for things. bitches aint shit im drunk

7:48…big dice
