Police arrested a Madison man last week who allegedly held a woman captive in his Mifflin Street apartment for three days and raped her with a partner, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report last week.

James Graham, 54, was arrested March 15 on a tentative charge of first-degree sexual assault for allegedly beating a 46-year-old woman and taking turns raping her with a friend in his apartment on the 400 block of West Mifflin Street, the newspaper reported.

The woman reportedly told police she met Graham and his friend, whom she was unable to identify, on March 11 and followed them to Graham’s apartment. While in the kitchen, she suffered a single blow to the face by Graham and was then ordered to take off her clothes.

The woman told officials the two men took turns holding her down and raping her, the State Journal added.

The woman was held hostage in a closet for the next three days.

Graham apparently kept a 12-inch knife on him and repeatedly told the victim if she were to speak or leave the apartment he would kill her.

Although unfamiliar with the case, Lt. Dave McCaw of the MPD said during sexual assault cases, after the suspect is arrested, little happens before the case trial.

“With a sexual assault, [the MPD] gets as much done in the shortest amount of time to have suspect charged property,” McCaw said.

Usually the MPD will continue a search if there is lack of physical evidence or if the victim and the suspect have contrasting stories, McCaw added.

But he reiterated he does not know about this specific case in particular.

However, Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said he knows detectives are currently working on the case and collecting evidence.

He added the incident is obviously extremely frightening.

“I am relieved the victim was able to get away from her attackers before more harm may have been done to her,” Verveer said.

“I know the police are taking this incident very seriously,” the alder continued.

According to Verveer, this is another “sad” incident further warning Madison residents to take their personal safety into consideration, especially during the late night hours.

McCaw said the search warrant could not be made available to The Badger Herald as of Sunday.

This article makes me sick… I park my car right over there. Seriously?!?!

I live right down the block. This guy (pictured in the Cardinal) always hangs out around Cap Foods. One day he started harassing my girlfriend and I while we were walking home. I thought he was just another harmless crazy person but this really makes you think about the people around you.
