The Sigma Chi fraternity and at least one other Greek chapter house were vandalized late last week, resulting in an emergency meeting between university officials and Greek community leaders Saturday.

University officials confirmed a window of the Sigma Chi house was broken late Thursday night or early Friday morning, resulting in the filing of a report with the Madison Police Department on behalf of the fraternity.

At least one other house located on Langdon Street filed a report after an incident Friday, though officials were unable to confirm the name of the chapter.

In response to the acts of vandalism, Dean of Students Lori Berquam and Coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Barb Kautz held a mandatory meeting with Greek leaders Saturday night to alert chapter leaders about the incidents and discuss possible safety measures for the future.

Berquam said the meeting was also held to ensure houses had security measures in place and to allow a forum for discussion.

“It was a good effort at communicating with everyone in terms of what happened,” Berquam said. “We do take [vandalism] very seriously, the same way we take sexual assault seriously. This really impacts our community. It impacts our campus. It impacts the learning that is happening.”

Berquam said she was surprised to hear there have been previous acts of vandalism toward chapter houses this year and says she plans to improve communication between MPD and the university to ensure they are alerted of incidents in the future.

“It ties directly to the bigger issue: If there is not a line of communication about what might be labeled vandalism, will there be a line of communication for bigger issues?” Berquam said.

Anti-Greek sentiments on campus were also addressed at the meeting, according to Berquam.

She said she hopes Greek leaders will begin to take a more active role in how their community is perceived on campus, though she said she believes it is an ongoing process they have already committed themselves to.

Interfraternity Council President Nate Anderson said in an e-mail to The Badger Herald the IFC applauds Berquam for hosting the meeting.

Anderson went on to say he hopes the meeting will be a springboard for future positive relations with Berquam and MPD.

“The IFC was shocked and saddened to hear about the vandalism that occurred at a member fraternity’s house this past week,” Anderson wrote. “Vandalism is a very serious issue that raises concerns about some overall safety issues in the downtown campus area.”

When asked if she believed there to be a connection between the vandalism and allegations made last week about an alleged sexual assault at Sigma Chi, Berquam said it would be insincere to say otherwise.

Sigma Chi President Andrew Thalhimer did not return several calls as of press time.

A representative of another chapter house where vandalism is suspected to have occurred declined to comment as well.

Report details are expected to be available today through MPD.

this is horrible I feel so bad for this fraternity. It shows what a poor written article with no facts or evidence can cause. They don’t deserve this and Dean Lori Berquam needs to do something about the Badger Herald’s article. No one seems to be defending these boys, which is unfair to them because there is no trial and he article was coming from one person’s point of view. I hope Sigma Chi gets through this tough time and realizes that they have a lot of sororities support including ours.

no one deserves having a brick thrown through their window. no one.

Is it possible the “other chapter” was the alleged rape victim’s sorority house? That would be horrible, but why else would the house remain nameless?

This shouldn’t happen. People need to realize that even though Sigma Chi is protecting several rapists, it’s still illegal and wrong to vandalize their house.

Well well, the straight white boys on Langdon are up to their cowardly deeds again raping girls. And now someone comes around to burn down their rape dens and now they cry that there being picked on. bo-ho!

Wow. People are trying very hard not to reveal the sorority.

Allegations of gang rape and the IFC doesn’t care.

Minor vandalism to their houses and suddenly the IFC is committed to a solution.

Wonder why there would be anti-greek sentiment on campus considering what responsible community members these people are.

When is Andrew Thalhimer going to saying anything??? Getting kinda ridiculous now.

if sigma chi wants defense, they need to defend themselves.

Using frat logic on this one, shouldn’t the headline read “Greek Community sees Alleged Vandalism.” Where is the hard evidence that confirms that this wasn’t a bird or squirrel. This is just disgusting journalism by the Herald and their anti-vandalism agenda. Should be in the Opinion section until they are going actually confirm everything with 100% certainty.

Everyone knows that either:

A) The frat is just saying this for attention, or B) they were really drunk and did it to themselves. Am I right, brahs.

Hmmm…one has wonder whether or not the windows were broken by a member (or supporter of) Sigma Chi in an attempt to gain support and turn sentiment against the victim. This may sound crazy, but it is exactly the same thing that is often done in politics. Make it look like the other side has committed the offense. A couple of broken windows definitely stinks - but come on - at the end of the day, it may just be ‘brilliant’ Machiavellianism.

i’m glad that weekend shenaningans is on the same level as a gang rape to berquam.

“We do take [vandalism] very seriously, the same way we take sexual assault seriously.”

Putting vandalism and sexual assault in the same category of severity? No way. C’mon brahs, put on a tough face, suck it up.

i believe that three of their windows were broken… not just one. I wouldnt call that minor vandalism. These guys are in a lose-lose situation and no matter how they respond to anything they seem to be getting scrutinized

if anyone really thinks that a member of Sigma Chi did this to their house for publicity, you ought to slap yourselves straight in the face. that is just ridiculous

So, who deserves to get raped then, genius?

A) The frat is just saying this for attention, or B) they were really drunk and did it to themselves. Am I right, brahs.

Classic, brahs

When I was younger, I worked for the Bush/Cheney re-election bid. Me and my co-campaigners stole yard signs, which were reported in the news as stolen by Kerry supporters. This is the same thing. I bet the very rapist threw the brick looking for sympathy. Well, theres none here for a frat boy that rapes my bros and brahs.

The police should find the “alleged rock” and check it for finger prints against everyone in the rape house - I bet you find your sick fuck rapists then.

Has to be an inside job—-Who would want to go to Langdon Street unless they were rapist frat boys, anyways?

for all you morons who think this was an “inside job,” you’re out of your minds. If you know anyone in the frat, these guys practically jerk off to their house. Also, three big rocks were turned over the to police on the night of the incident. Get your shit straight before making yourselves look ignorant.

n@ 1:30 “no matter how they respond to anything they seem to be getting scrutinized”

Constant scrutiny! It’s as if they might have violently raped someone!Oh wait..

if anybody here has not read the Soffer article in Opinions today, i recommend you do so before you make a pre-mature comment.

i have a feeling that these wont be the last bricks to be thrown at these coastie punks

I think it’s saddening that some people believe that Sigma Chi is willingly protecting rapists without any hard evidence. This just goes to show that people outside the Greek system have preconceived notions of who fraternity members are, without ever taking the opportunity to get to know them. Yes, it is horrifying that a rape happened and yes, the perpetrators should be brought to justice. But with one writer’s opinion and no DNA or police evidence, it makes no sense to write off an entire group of people, to drag their names through the dirt, and to treat them as though they are inherently different in their motives than anyone else on this campus. Fraternity members don’t go around calling each other “brah,” and thinking up ways to prey on women. They are students just like anyone else, and they come from the same towns and same high schools as many of you do. People should not be exploiting this situation as an opportunity to lash out against the Greek system. We should let the university and police do their job bringing justice for the victim, and we should only accept as fact that which has been confirmed by the authorities.

Man my friends had all of the windows in their house broken at their off campus apartment and noone cared. Now it happens to a frat and everyone is crying over it. It is a broken window, what happened to that girl was way worse than this.

there is evidence she was raped. read the initial article instead of just the comments.

I guess the stone that the builder refused…shall be thrown through the Sigma Chi window

anyone else find it strange that neither the Cardinal nor any of the other state papers have picked this up? maybe they’re waiting for all the facts to come out…

It is interesting to see how this situation has put an entire group of people in a lose-lose situation. Whether or not a rape has occurred, and who has done it seems to be no longer important to the majority of people. The members of Sigma Chi already appear to be guilty in everyones eyes, without having any acceptable means to defend themselves. Even if they did give a statement, all of you would find someway to say that they are hiding something, really guilty, etc. And besides the fact that the cost of analyzing some 100 sets of DNA is astronomical, it would take well over a year to get those results. Finally, when their house is vandalized, and the hatred toward them is clearly proven in just these comments, they get blamed for doing it themselves. There is apparently nothing they can do to defend themselves, so why should any of you expect them to try?

this case will never be solved…end of story. For the next 6 years (until the statute of limitations runs out) this frat will be viewed as a rapist house, because the case will not be shut down until then. after this, the house will still be viewed as a rapist house thanks to the herald. all of this could have been prevented by witholding the fraternities name, kind of like they did with a particular sorority that received vandalism this weekend as well… i wonder what sorority this could be? i wonder if there is a certain victim who is a member of this sorority? i wonder if the victims own sorority sisters who live there commited this crime against there own house, in hopes that they could get some press? t that h would e be t something a!

That Has Everything That Amazes

-Think about it all…

11:11, you restored a little bit of my faith in humanity with that comment right there. good work.

A quote from the first Alleged Rape article:

“The Interfraternity Council is disheartened and saddened by these allegations and hopes that if these allegations are substantiated, that those involved will be held accountable for their actions,” Andersen wrote.

A quote from this article:

“The IFC was shocked and saddened to hear about the vandalism that occurred at a member fraternity’s house this past week,” Anderson wrote. “Vandalism is a very serious issue that raises concerns about some overall safety issues in the downtown campus area.”

Does anyone else see a drastic difference in these two approaches? there is no question that the vandalism happened, and yet, the rape, supported by substantial medical evidence, is not considered to be legitimate, nor a very serious issue?!? Is the personal violation of another human being not regarded as a TAD bit loftier crime than damaging an object?! Glad to see the IFC has its priorities.

these comments are more entertaining than the shout outs, am i right brah?

See, now IFC cares. Severe sexual assault, nah, that’s all cool brah.

SOMEONE DEFACED OUR HOLY HOUSE?! CALL THE FBI!

And people wonder why 90% of the campus “suddenly” decided to hate Greeks…

Guess what…the Rape Case is being investigated and until evidence and the justice system catches up with the allegations and everyones opinions, there is nothing anyone can do, other than do preventative education!

However, being stupid and breaking the window of the fraternity where the crime took place is not a good way to solve the problem.

And it may be one broken window, but what it alludes to is that some people aren’t willing to rely on the justice system and have targeted the fraternity as a whole. Window breaking could just be the beginning…so yeah it is a big deal.

If you all really care this much about the situation, show up to the meeting tomorrow and help educate the campus instead of trying to put blame everywhere.

I believe this act of vandalism received more attention than the norm due to the circumstances at hand. But yes, vandalism does happen all the time on our campus yet it isn’t deemed important enough to make it in the herald. As for the possibility of this being premeditated, there is the possibility but highly doubtful.

Also, I agree it is quite ironic how the committee calls for an emergency meeting, which includes the Dean, to discuss the issue of vandalism, but when the hospital informed the campus rape center concerning the rape, the poor girl received one phone call…

As for calling the girl a liar, don’t victimize the victim.

So let me get this straight - Lori Berquam is willing to speak out against vandalism, but not gang rape? And where’s Biddy’s two cents? Will nobody in the administration even come out and make a tepid, lawyer-approved statement to the effect of “rape is bad”? This is very disturbing.

Those SICK frat boys deserve more than broken windows

What everyone here fails to realize is that those “Frat boys” don’t really give a crap about what any of you think. You don’t know them, they probably don’t know you, and likely won’t want to. If it makes you feel better to tell them how much they suck, I don’t think they really care while they party in their huge house with tons of girls in sororities. Granted, I hate the damn greek system, they certainly don’t give a shit about me so why waste my time defaming them? I think everyone here needs to get a life and let people who are qualified do their damn job. We are adults here, so it might be time to act like it.

Acquaintance rape and gange rape date back years! The only difference is that “today”, more women victims are more likely to report an incident.
