The dispute that ended in Madison’s 11th homicide in 2008 allegedly started after the victim got in an argument with an employee when he wanted to take his beer outside of Crave Restaurant and Lounge.
According to Joel DeSpain, spokesperson for the Madison Police Department, the victim, Eduardo Cademartori, 27, was trying to take a beer outside when Ross Spang, 22, Madison, tried to prevent him.
“We determined that the victim was trying to take a beer out of the bar, which in part, led to a confrontation with bar employee,” DeSpain said.
Cademartori died of severe head trauma after beginning on life support on Sunday, according to Dane County Coroner John Stanley.
The police report said Cademartori was knocked to the ground with a single blow to the head early Sunday morning on the corner of State and Johnson streets.
DeSpain added Spang communicated with the other two suspects, Roynell Fuller, 19, of Madison, allegedly a bar patron, and a third man, whom police talked with for the first time yesterday.
“We believe Roynell Fuller threw the punch,” DeSpain said. “The only thing we are able to determine thus far is the bar employee and the victim got into a confrontation, and the confrontation began, in part, because of the victim carrying his beer out of the bar.”
Fuller is currently facing a charge of substantial battery, and Spang is charged with being party to the crime and substantial battery.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said probable cause affidavits filed in Dane County Circuit Court disclose Spang told Madison police he pushed Cademartori out of the bar, but no reason was specified.
Spang told police Cademartori punched him in the mouth outside of the bar. Spang returned to the bar with his mouth bleeding and told Fuller and the unidentified suspect what happened. The three men went into the street to search for Cademartori.
Detectives are still investigating the case, and the charges against Fuller and Spang will be upgraded in the coming days to some type of homicide charge.
Capt. Mary Schauf of the Central Police District said she would be surprised if the upgraded charges were intentional homicide, adding she expects it will be a reckless homicide charge.
Cademartori, a racecar mechanic from DeLand, Fla., had moved to Madison one week ago to begin training with a new team.
Court Commissioner Todd Meurer set bail at $10,000 for Spang and at $5,000 for Fuller at a bail hearing Wednesday. The Wisconsin State Journal reported Spang is expected to post his bail and be released, according to his attorney, Tracy Wood.
Verveer said the two suspects are scheduled to return to court next week.

so the guy who threw the punch only got $5,000 bail and the other guy who didnt punch him got $10,000? huh?
Anonymous (December 11, 2008 @ 3:15am):
I knew Eduardo for a dozen years, and the chances of him starting a fight are exactly zero. Spang is a punk (at 22yrs he has three plus DUI's and other run ins with Police) Spang can spread his lies...I am sure his attorney will teach him well...Spang aka COWARD grabbed two guys to jump Eduardo while he was walking home alone. Enough said. The world lost a great soul with the passing of Eddie...CP

I understand that one of the parties was involved in an altercation the prior week. What is the drinking age in Wisconsin? If 21 what was a 19 year old doing in the bar? Is their any physical evidence to support that Spang was struck in the mouth. Nevertheless the victim was a block away and leaving the area when he was vicously attacked by at least two maybe three men who pursued him with the itent to cause severe harm. I personally know this victim. He was a very mild mannered and kind individual. He had no record. How about the attackers and their records? Based on the events reported by you, these individuals should be charged with at least 2nd degree murder and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It is a good thing for them that I am not the prosecuter in this case. I would make certain that they pay for this heinous crime without mercy. Society does not need this type of person in it. Eduardo "Eddie" Rest in Peace my friend.

$10000 and $5000 for bail????? Are you kidding me? The people of Madison should be appauled. It is evident to me that allowing murderers to walk the streets is common practice in your city. i do not live in Madison and am very sorry that I encouraged my friend to move there because now he is dead. And the person that killed him is eating breakfast with his family and sleeping in his bed in the comfort and saftey of his own home. Hmmm, must be nice....

Roynell fuller was a great guy, I have known him for a number of years and his caring nature blows my mind that this could happen. RIP Eduardo, what was done was wrong. I love you Roy, everything will work out.
Anonymous (December 11, 2008 @ 2:56pm):
Roynell is a drug-dealing thug. He deserves no mercy from the court.
Anonymous (December 11, 2008 @ 3:12pm):
Bail is most likely set that low because the police and DA think there's little chance of the two escaping, as they are now very publicly recognizable.
Also, please be careful with how you sling around "murder" as it means different things in different states. Some states, for example, reserve 1st degree homicide for killing a cop, while in other states it means intentionally killing someone. The context of a situation can completely change whether it's first-degree (intentional) homicide, second-degree (reckless) homicide, or third-degree (negligent).

@3:12pm: This was clearly an act of felony murder under Wisconsin Statute 940.03:

Anonymous (December 11, 2008 @ 9:34pm):
roynell fuller was my friend and a great man. this incident was very unfortunate... roy graduated from high school, worked fulltime, was working on his future plans, and had a great heart. those who do not know him should NOT judge him on his minor record. eduardo sounds like a nice man, and i'm sorry for his loss, but he also threw a punch at Spang, which could've led to his (spang's) death, if he hit him in the 'right' place.. its all a matter of unfortunate 'luck'. roy, you will stay in my thoughts, and i pray for you everyday. i love you sweetie

I grew up knowing Hector, Eddie's Father, and he is one of the best people I know. He loved nothing more than his family and couldn't have been more proud of them. This loss will live forever in his heart and my thoughts and prayers are with his mom, dad and sisters.
My hope is justice will be served because no one should be put in the situation that they are fighting for their lives because someone didn't care. Eddie will be the "Bigger Man" forever in heaven.
May God and peace be with you Hector and Florecia.

Look, Roy was not a thug and this poor Eduardo fellow did not deserve what happened to him. Please refrain from making overarching statements that are completely unjustified - they just make the conversation stupid. Roy is a good guy and good family man who was probably just trying to confront someone who punched his friend. Was he right to do that in a violent way? No, but things happen and we all have seen someone overreact in these situations. Did he wail on the guy until he was unconscious and then flee? No, he hit the guy once. That doesn't make it right but its pretty obvious that Roy wasn't trying to kill Eduardo. I apologize to the family; I do live in Madison and am appalled at what happened, but talk like this wont make it right. Peace to Eduardo and Roy's families for what is truly a tragedy.
Anonymous (December 12, 2008 @ 12:47pm):
I have a sneaking suspicion that the victim may not have accepted the fact that he should not be carrying a beer out of the bar particularly gracefully. I highly doubt that it was the fact that he carried the beer out that led to this incident.
Be realistic commentors. I am sure that all three of the involved individuals made extremely stupid decisions but to think that someone punching someone else intended to kill them is just asinine. Should there be consequences? Absolutely. Obviously the victim has suffered the greatest consequence but just because of a fluke as to how he hit his head shouldn't mean that the puncher is a murderer, that Madison has gone to hell in a handbasket, or any of the other knee-jerk reactions that have been posted.
Anonymous (December 12, 2008 @ 1:39pm):
So, if Spang got punched in the mouth, why wouldn't he punch back right there and then instead of going into the bar to get help? Because that never happened, that's why? Ross Spang is a punk and people who knew him in high school could confirm that. And, Roynell is a drug dealing wannabe gansta. "Folk Crips, forever" He deserves life in prison. If it doesn't happen now, it will happen in 5 years after he kills someone else.
Anonymous (December 12, 2008 @ 1:44pm):
Spang is a punk who has a history of starting fights and DUI's. If hedoesn't spend the rest of his life in prison for this crime he will soon enough for another!
Same with Fuller. He too has a record of drugs and fights. At 19 he is on track for a great criminal career. Throw him in jail for life before he kills again.
Anonymous (December 12, 2008 @ 1:59pm):
Doesn't the article say he was punched only once? How is that jumping someone with 3 guys as someone said? It is a terrible thing that this man died, but it is obviously a case of a few drunk assholes (victim and attacker included) getting into a fight and one of them dying inintendedly.
Anonymous (December 12, 2008 @ 10:26pm):
Senseless; I cannot wrap my head around it! A true tragedy. I attended elementary school and high school with Eduardo. One of the kindest individuals I have ever known. He was a friend and will truly be missed. My heart goes out to the Cademartori’s. …I hope that with time, great life lessons are learned from our gargantuan loss, and forestall odious crimes like this from occurring in the future.
Anonymous (December 13, 2008 @ 4:48am):
Let's jus take this as it is, a horrible accident that resulted from a very stupid situation. I concede that roynell did do something very stupid and it probably wasn't motivated as much by this incident but the one a few months earlier where one of his best friends was stabbed. He was likely over reacting being protective of one friend after another was killed. From the tone of most of these postings it sounds like every time someone is punched the person punching should be jailed for life. I don't think anyone in this situation is 100% innocent, no matter how well you knew them in high school or grade school. People were drunk and I doubt you knew any of these people as drunk grade schoolers.

"If 21 what was a 19 year old doing in the bar?"
Definitely never been to Madison...
Anonymous (December 13, 2008 @ 5:49pm):
Has anyone asked whether Crave should have better security, rather than relying upon young barstaff to chase after people trying to leave with bottles of beer? There's something to be said about having intimidatingly large bouncers on the door- you just don't mess with them. AND that 19 year old Fuller shouldn't have been in Crave. They'll be lucky to keep their liqueur license.
Amy Croushore (December 14, 2008 @ 3:29am):
For those of you who think that this was just an "unlucky" punch or that Eddie wasn't jumped.... tell me why he was punched in the back of his neck?
Anonymous (December 14, 2008 @ 1:14pm):
as an alumnus, and long-time madison bar patron, I just hope that everyone takes this incident to heart. strange things happen with alcohol and bars, and you all need to look after each other out there. this is a tragedy, regardless of what side you are taking.

Does Wisconsin have the DEATH PENALTY? If you dont think thats fair, I Guess you think three against one is.
Anonymous (December 14, 2008 @ 11:33pm):
I knew Eduardo and his family. I hope and pray for peace for them. As for the attackers I don't care what their age, or who was drunk, and especially if Eduardo actually started the fight. All I know is that what's his name has a bloody lip which meant he saw the punch coming. Eduardo was attacked by three guys from behind. Where's the "man" in that. My heart goes out to the family.
Anonymous (December 15, 2008 @ 3:49am):
WOW!! I went to school with roynell and he is a very intelligent black man. I don't know how this could have happened but Im deeply saddened by this event. And for the person who said he was a drug dealin thug...they can kick rocks because they obviously don't know roynell. The punch obviously WASN"T intended to kill the man, it just so happened to end up that way...so he deserves to be punished for hitting someone but not for the death because that was accidental
Anonymous (December 15, 2008 @ 4:25pm):
Spang shouldn't be held responsible.
Anonymous (December 15, 2008 @ 6:25pm):
Regarding Fuller's mother comment about people should not think of her son as an animal. That would be a huge upgrade to his real condition, he is a piece of garbage.
Anonymous (December 15, 2008 @ 11:47pm):
@3:49am: What about Roynell's cocaine bust? Hell, half of the people in the downtown area knows about the drug-dealing going on out of Roynell's house. As for the death being an "accident": it doesn't matter. Under WI Statute 940.03, Roynell committed felony murder:

Im sorry, but both of these punks deserve what is coming.
First off, the Spang guy has been arrested so many times, he clearly is a guy which we might as well give up on.
Secondly, the Fuller kid I have zero respect for. There is nothing manly about attacking a guy 3 on 1. Let your friend fight his fight.

Eduardo was a very kind, fun-loveing person,i have a hard time thinking he threw any punches at anyone. And again why didnt he hit him back if that happened. This is a tragedy. Its time guys realize the cant just go around hitting people to show how tough they are. these guys have previous issues w/ the police. and as said before, how did a 19 year old get into a bar? and why is the bar not in responsible for their employee? he works in a bar and i believe has a few dui's this is odd to me..... r.i.p eduardo and our prayers go out to his family!

I hope they both go to prison for life. At least give them 50 years minimum. If they would have killed someone I know they would get whacked sooner or later. Hopefully they commit suicide in prison.
Those tupid little punks are going to the BIGHOUSE forever. Little boys prepare to meet Bubba! :)

Spang has been arrested 22 times since turning 18 years old. He averages getting arrested at least 5 times a year. What a wonderful classy human being. Send him to the Bighouse for 50 years.
Anonymous (December 23, 2008 @ 8:59pm):
Spang has had 22 ORDINANCE VIOLATIONS on his record since turning 17, A third of them have been dismissed, and most of the other ones are traffic related like operating while suspended/revoked or speeding. The worst he's been arrested for is disorderly conduct and operating while intoxicated. And that's nothing considering we live in the Alcoholic Capitol of the World.

if you morons think that's a career criminal you should spend some time in cook county jail to meet REAL scum.
and all this ROYNELL was a DRUG DEALER jazz..... He has only been arrested for MISDEMEANOR possession of Cocaine. You can only get a misdemeanor charge if it is under a gram otherwise its a felony. What kinda drug KINGPIN gets arrested for a $50 bag of coke... think people, that's possession for personal use.
MORONS.

Roynell was dealing out of the same house that Juan Bernal used to deal out of, and that Nate & Co. still deal out of. He's a drug dealer and a murderer, and he deserves life behind bars.

First of all, my heart and prayer's go to the Cademartori family! I knew Eduardo, and to be honest, he was never the type of guy to start a fight.Eduardo was a gentlemen in every way you could imagine. To hear this kind of news, just tears me apart. Here we have an example,of young succuccesfull man with his life in front of him, taken away by what 3 LOW-LIFES!
About the murder's roynell and spang. Obviously these wanna be thugs or cowards have no future in life. Both of these guy's have already had numurious run in's with the law, at the ages of 19 and 22. They both have a bright future, right? the only future they have should behind bars! As far as the legal matter, roynell should be tried for murder or manslaughter! Since he think's, he is a big boy at age 19, he should be tried as an adult and not a minor!
For the Crave and Lounge, i would hold them responsible. What's a 19 yr. old kid doing in a bar? Hopefuully the DA, will point this out and have there liquor license's taken away or even better shut the Crave down.
Justice will prevail and God Bless Eduardo and his family!
