The victim of a beating one block from Crave Restaurant and Lounge early Sunday morning died early Tuesday after being listed as being in critical condition for more than two days.
The death of 27-year-old Eduardo Cademartori marks Madison’s 11th homicide of the year.
Two men were arrested Monday in connection with the incident. Roynell Fuller, 19, was charged with substantial battery and Ross Spang, 22, a Crave employee, was charged with substantial battery and being party to a crime.
Capt. Mary Schauf said the charges will be upgraded now that the victim has succumbed to his injuries, but based on current evidence, it will probably be a charge of first- or second-degree reckless homicide.
“Based on what I know right now, it would be very surprising if [the charge] were intentional (homicide),” Schauf said, adding the charges will be changed after results of the autopsy come back.
Schauf said an autopsy is scheduled for today, which will determine the cause of death.
Cademartori, a highly regarded race-car mechanic, was in Madison training for a week with a local racing team. He previously worked for a LevelFive Motorsports Racing team in Florida.
According to the police report, the incident started at the Crave. Cademartori left by himself, and three men followed him to the corner of State and Johnson Streets, where the victim was hit with a blow to the head.
When police arrived, Cademartori was unconscious and appeared to have suffered severe head trauma.
Investigators have not yet made contact with the third person involved, Schauf said, adding that the case has been very well handled.
“The investigation is very well in hand,” Schauf said, “(but) it’s far from being done.”
The fight occurred just one block from a homicide in September outside the Plaza Tavern, in which Juan Bernal, 22, of Madison was stabbed and killed.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said about 10 police cars responded to the scene on Sunday morning around 2 a.m. and more than a dozen officers worked to interview witnesses at the scene.

The Crave and The Plaza suck so much anyway, but these stories aren’t helping their sucky reps.
aww roynell man, what did you get yourself into? You used to be such a good person…
yeah I can’t believe Roynell did this.. I lived next door to the kid for years.
We’re all thinking about u ross. u r in our prayers…stay strong…
well what u expect. convictions, possesion, DWIs. Acting like violent animals and thinking that this behavior whether (sober or drunk)must be accepted by all must not be condoned
i have no sympathy for these people. control your drinking and dont fing beat people to death.
you have to be some kinda of gutless coward to surround a person as they were walking AWAY from the problem, and beat him to death. I hope these 2 go away for a very long time, and that the Crave Lounge gets shut down for serving a 19 year old who killed someone. I pray for Eduardo and his family
Roy is a good kid.. I can’t believe this happened. I know for a fact that he never meant for this to happen. After what happened to Juan, I am so surprised that they would be out there fighting like this again. I am so disappointed and heart broken. Knowing Roy, I dont want to see him charged with murder, but it is so terrible that another man lost his life. I wish he would have thought twice before getting involved in something that was not even his fight to begin with. I will pray for you Roy & my condolences go out to the victim’s family
Can’t believe you people.
They killed this man. He has a family. And people who love him in Florida. They just killed him.
I hope they rot in prison.
Yeah, poor Roynell, the nicest drug-dealing murdering thug around.
Ross is an amazing, bright young man, you’ll get through this.
Crave doesn’t suck… plaza sucks but crave is pretty fun. When its not a sketchy dance club, its a good place to go with friends and order a few bottles of wine. shame this floridian had to get drunk and cocky which ultimately resulted in his death.
Ross & Roynell will make model prisoners! Since, you guys claim they are ‘good kids’ I’m sure they’ll make ‘good prisoners.’
Who cares if three stupid wannabee gangbangers go to prison for the rest of their lives? I’ll sleep better tonight knowing they are in jail where they belong.
I hope they rot in prison. They killed someone and laughed about it? These chumps are weak! I wish I would have been there to back up Eduardo. All three of them chumps would be hurting right now.
I hope to run into them soon.
Man, i lived in madison from 1999-2003 and watched downtown progressively get more violent. I was at Stillwaters the night of the shooting. People do drugs and binge drink excessively in that town. I think they should consider a dry campus, although the local economy thrives off kids being alcoholics. Its really sad that the bouncer couldn’t just let it go. He did his job by getting the unruly bar patron out of his establishment. He chose to try to be a tough guy with his thug buddies who were probably serving drugs from the bar. Tough guys often times end up in Prison.
