A 26-year-old man is in critical condition after an early Sunday morning altercation on the corner of State and Johnson streets left him unconscious.
Madison police responded at 1:54 a.m., and as of press time, the victim was on life support.
According to the police report, a disturbance began inside the Crave Lounge at 201 W. Gorham St. The victim walked from Crave Lounge to Johnson and State where he ran into three suspects. The victim was hit “with a blow to the head causing him to fall to the ground.” Madison police found the victim unconscious.
The possibility that this case could become a homicide investigation resulted in a police response much more serious than what might normally result from a typical bar brawl.
According to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, the victim “was in such severe condition that they thought it was highly possible that he may [die], largely because of his head making contact with the pavement in such a traumatic way.”
Verveer, whose district is where the incident occurred, said roughly 10 squad cars were present at the scene as well as more than a dozen officers. Many officers were interviewing witnesses present at the time of the incident.
According to Verveer, authorities at the scene believed it was highly probable the victim could die due to severe head trauma, which they believe he incurred during the fight.
The incident does not appear to be a random act, but Verveer said he does not believe weapons were not involved.
“The police were taking a precautions and treating this as a potential homicide, which necessitated the tremendous response,” Verveer said.
According to Verveer, among those responding were Capt. Mary Schauf of the central police district, detectives and a special investigator called to the scene to gather forensic evidence.
“Detectives and the police captains were called at their homes in the middle of the night, and detectives were ordered into work to start the investigation immediately,” Verveer said.
An investigation into this incident is continuing. If the case becomes a homicide, it would be the 11th in Madison this year.

if this was a hip hop show the Crave would loose their liquor license..
maybe everyone can learn a lesson here and think before brawling with strangers
I think it’s time that the Badger Herald be held accountable for it’s time and time again examples of poor journalism. This so called “newspaper” has a history of reporting mere hear say and speculation. I’d suggest that the readers of this “newspaper” simply pick up a copy of the Wisconsin State Journal, a publication run by professional journalists and not students trying to pad their resumes before going off to further infect today’s media. The headline itself is inaccurate! The crime took place on the corner of State and Johnson…maybe the “editor” (the use of double negatives in a story of this caliber makes me question if articles are in fact actually edited at all)should MapQuest Crave to see where it is actually located before printing a false headline. Like I said, pick up the Wisconsin State Journal and read the short paragraph that accurately describes the events of that evening. My heart and prayers go out the 26 year old man and his family.

This is the second article where someone from Crave seems to have taken offense to the characterization of the incident. Not only was the murder — yes, Eduardo passed away Monday — the result of a disturbance that began at Crave, but one of the men charged as a party to the “substantial battery” was in the employ of Crave! The other man charged was 19 and underage. And you think that the title is misleading and/or inaccurate?
As the police have stated many times already, this was not a case of random violence. And while it is not the responsibility of Crave to police the neighborhood, this incident reflects poorly on the bar first and foremost. Roynell Fuller, 19, is no stranger to the bars on Henry. In fact, he was directly involved in the fight which resulted in a stabbing at the Plaza earlier this year. A quick look at the CCAP history of Ross Spang also reveals a startling lack of good judgment. That said, the only good that can come from this and the Bernal tragedy is (at the very least) more draconian regulation of the venues responsible.
please explain to me how being beaten to death by three people for walking away from an altercation can have any learning value about brawling with strangers. someone’s life has been taken form them and your commenting about a hip-hop clubs liquor license, get a clue
it sickens me that you people are so quick to make pointless comments surrounding this article. the man mentioned in this article was a friend of mine, and since this incident, has passed away. for the record, he was an incredibly polite, no confrontational, amazing friend. he will be missed.
