Junior assaulted at gunpoint on Langdon Street

A University of Wisconsin junior was assaulted at gunpoint by two males on Langdon Street late Monday night.

The victim, a member of sorority Kappa Alpha Theta, was held by two black males at approximately 11:09 p.m. outside the Kappa Alpha Theta house on 108 Langdon St.

One of the suspects demanded money and a laptop from the victim and also displayed a handgun, according to Madison Police Department Sgt. Cindy Mierow. The victim was exiting her car after returning home from the library when the armed suspects confronted her, Mierow added.

Both subjects fled on foot with a small amount of money and the victim’s laptop. The victim was not injured.

“It seems like it’s best when people are traveling in groups of two or more,” Mierow said.

A sketch of the suspects had not been released as of press time. Mierow would not comment on whether the robberies were linked to other campus-area incidents.

“Just use caution,” Mierow said. “If you see something suspicious occurring in a parking lot, call a friend to meet you.”

The first suspect is a black male of average build between 15 and 20 years old. He was last seen sporting an afro and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The second subject had a larger build and was wearing a similar getup.

Sororities and fraternities were sent e-mails from their chapter president advising them to keep their doors locked.

“You always have to be careful,” Mierow said.

Several Greek system members denied comment late Monday night.

She drove from her sorority house on Langdon to the library? Please let it have been Wendt or Steenbock(but I doubt it).

This city disgusts me. It’s about time we pick up the trash and throw it away.

It seems like its best when people are traveling in groups of two or more.”

Are you kidding me? This girl was in front of her sorority house, not walking down a dark alley. This is not her fault. This is getting out of control. Instead of having to rely on her sorority sisters to protect her from men with guns, she should be able to count on the police.

The way this article was written is disgusting to me. The Black male was between the ages of 15 and 20, they couldn’t narrow it down even more. Then the first suspect was “seen sporting an afro”???? Really? Let’s think of some better words that aren’t horribly stereotypical. And the second suspect was “wearing a similar get-up”??? Who allowed these words to be used? If you are going to report news, please use words that aren’t so offensive and that don’t foster stereotypes of the African American community. There are already enough problems with that, we don’t need it done in the school newspaper as well.

Except when people traveling in groups of two or more get robbed. (see http://badgerherald.com/news/2008/09/23/twouwstudents_robb.php)

Keep up the good work MPD!

Use caution? I heard about this 10 minutes after it happened last night, and twenty minutes after that I saw UW police talking about cookies (no joke) and cutting down election material. Muggers on the loose within blocks and our police are working in teams to remove election material?

either allow everyone to openly carry weapons or have more police. looks like open carry’s more likely.

Hmm… two young black males… schocking.

I live in an apt. next door, I heard a scream, but no other sounds of struggle or confrontation. I hope she’s okay… but when crime reaches this neighborhood - a traditionally safe one - we really do have problems.

For the love of God, does someone need to get shot on State Street or mugged in front of Union South before the city police starts to do something substansive about this increase in crime? Looks to me like a new gang or something has moved into Madison targeting students. I remember when I felt safe walking home after a late night of studying; what a different a year makes. Get your asses in gear, MPD, BEFORE SOMEONE DIES!

Trickle down effect doesn’t work. Blame Regan!

Please, only travel in groups of two or more! (see http://badgerherald.com/news/2008/09/23/twouwstudents_robb.php)

Keep up the good work MPD!

Yet another incident in the Langdon St. area that will not be taken seriously.
