The Student Service Finance Committee rejected funding eligibility for the student organization Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow and approved funding for the organization Movimiento Estudantil Chicano de Aztlán, or MEChA, Tuesday.

To be eligible to receive funding, a student group must have students as the main focus of their organization, reach all University of Wisconsin students, provide no academic credit for their service and have no equivalent on campus.

The majority of SSFC members said the services provided by CFACT did not meet the criteria necessary to receive funding.

“[CFACT] provide a lot of events, with no real services that have a provider and receiver,” SSFC representative Joseph French said. “Their main purpose is to get their word out, which is not what this committee is designed to fund.”

CFACT were denied funding by a vote of 0-3-1.

Several SSFC members said MEChA met the criteria to receive funding by providing a unique service directly to the UW community through music and mural programs tailored for individuals and organizations. The programs aim to improve group dynamics and develop leadership on campus.

Additionally, the committee said the group raises Chicano cultural awareness on campus.

“The group provides students with opportunities for leadership development through art,” SSFC Secretary Carl Fergus said. “University students are the principle focus and beneficiaries of the programs.”

The funding for MEChA was approved by a vote of 4-0-0.

The groups F.H. King Student for Sustainable Agriculture and Working Class Student Union also had their eligibility hearings at the meeting. Funding decisions for the two groups are scheduled for Thursday.

Aztlan is the name of a radical and militant Mexican separatist organization.

I can’t believe that my seg fees fund partisan organizations that serve such a narrow subset of campus. Let’s just ditch seg fees, save students a fair deal of money, and let organizations raise their own money. If the cause is worthwhile, then they won’t have a problem.

4 people on this committee that controls so much money….. what the hell, ASM…

I think CFACT should have received eligibility. I have been an intern for the past two semesters and really feel like I’ve learned a ton with CFACT. Not only have I learned, but the group enabled me to reach out to my fellow sudents to share with them what I had learned.

It is both outrageous and illegal that CFACT would be denied funding while WISPIRG is granted funding. This violates the famous supreme court decision Southworth vs. Board of Regents, which states that the view of a student organization may not be taken into consideration when making funding decisions. The ONLY difference between the two groups is that WISPIRG is very liberal and CFACT loves freedom and liberty.

“[CFACT] provide a lot of events, with no real services that have a provider and receiver,” SSFC representative Joseph French said.

Yeah, like this doesn’t describe virtually all the groups that SSFC granted eligibility to! This vote is outrageous and shows just how biased these folks are against any group that doesn’t operate within their ideological framework. Hopefully the folks at CFACT will think about getting a court order and shut the whole process down.

Thank God! CFACT is such a freaking scam.

“Aztlan is the name of a radical and militant Mexican separatist organization.”

Hal Netkin’s “mayorno” website is hardly the place to research MEChA.

how the hell is cfact a SCAM!? it’s a group that deserves eligibility just like any other group they gave it to. i guarantee cfact is more of a real group than any other one out there. and it’s bigger.

cfact is funded by the oil industry… check it out wikipedia - exxon mobile and chevron. they don’t need our funds if those billionaires are behind them. and besides wispirg does actual positive stuff that i have heard of. who the fuck is cfact anyway?
