Also by Becky Vevea:
Two young men, including one University of Wisconsin student, suffered injuries after being attacked on the 100 block of North Breese Terrace early Sunday morning.
The UW student, 18, received a bump on the head, while the other man, 20, of Green Bay, suffered a concussion and a broken nose.
The incident allegedly occurred after one of them accidentally bumped into another man walking in a group of men. The group then proceeded to follow the two victims for a few minutes when one of the perpetrators tackled the 20-year-old.
Ald. Robbie Webber, District 5, said criminal activity in the area is high every Saturday when there is a football game, due to underage drinking, excessive noise and public urination. Otherwise, the area is not any different from any other area in Madison.
“You have to keep your wits about you.” Webber said, adding that students need to remember to be aware of where you are, who you are with and what is going on.
According to a Madison police report, one of the perpetrators was described as a white male, 6 feet tall, 190 lbs. and wearing a blue Chicago Cubs baseball hat and a basketball jersey with the word “Antigo” across it.
The other perpetrator, who tackled the victim, was described as a white male, 5-foot-11-inches, 240 lbs. with short black hair. He was wearing a gray T-shirt.
The report said a female caller notified police at 12:30 a.m. after she heard a man walking past her say he severely injured someone.
Police arrived on the scene, but found no one. Around 1:30 a.m., the victims were admitted to a local hospital with the help of a good Samaritan.
“It would be nice if everyone helped out everywhere you go,” Webber said, noting there are always people who do the right thing and those who do not.
At the beginning of the semester, many students are living on their own for the first time and tend to forget practical safety precautions like locking doors, Webber said.
“Although we all would love to think of Madison … as a safe place, there will always be people who will take advantage of you, and you have to watch out for yourself, and you have to watch out for your friends.” Webber said.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, the article does not reflect the context of my comments. None of my statements were about the incident in the article, as I have not been briefed on this crime. I have no idea whether the facts are as stated to police, if the two groups actually knew each other, if this was more than a simple “bump on the sidewalk,” where the parties were going or coming from, etc.
I was asked if there was much “criminal activity” in this area. I responded that it depends on how you define “criminal activity,” hence the reference to under-age alcohol consumption, fights, noise, and public urination. It was a joke.
I was asked if a good samaritan helping a person was typical, hence my comments on the fact that there are good and bad people everywhere, and that we all need to watch out for each other.
My point was that this neighborhood is not dangerous, but that Madison is a city, and many people may be moving from smaller communities, or may be out on their own for the first time.
If you are new to Madison, please keep in mind that yes, bad things can happen, and you have to keep your wits about you. That includes making sure that you pay attention to your surroundings, who is with you, who you let into your home, and watching out for your friends.
Also keep in mind that drinking can diminish these skills, as well as make others around you less predictable and rational. Many violent incidents happen at bar time, or after one or both parties have been drinking. This is not a coincidence.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am often found enjoying a good malted or distilled beverage. But I learned early in life to not get so drunk that I couldn’t take care of myself. I was lucky - very lucky - that worse things didn’t happen.
Welcome to Madison. Have fun, but be safe.

It sounds like a gang of frustrated high schoolers roaming the streets between masturbatory sessions. Relax, “antigo,” you don’t have to assault people just because girls think you’re a homosexual.

Why am I not surprised that one of the idiot perpetrators was wearing a Cubs hat?

My roommate and I were the Good Samaritans who helped the two kids back to their dorm. It was a brutal, one sided fight. In all honesty, I’m surprised there wasn’t more “carnage”. The kid was getting repeatedly kicked in the head, punched, kicked in the stomach, ribs, etc. The two assailants just kept going after him, even after the victim was down on the ground. needless to say, separating them wasn’t easy, but it eventually got done. It wasn’t a football player, it was two frat guys(from what I can stereotype). Plus, this wasn’t an attack that happened because of football, it happened because of alcohol and testosterone. That being said, I hope that other people around madison will do something to help if another situation arises like this around campus.

yet another reason why we need to crack down on public urination.

I heard that the two kids beat up actually started the fight? I heard that inside the party they were at they were starting stuff with everyone and finally it caught up when one of them hit one of the two frat guys. This just goes to show that people need to just stop drinking because this happens everytime. A kid drinks says the wrong things to the wrong person then stuff happens and who can you really blame at that point?
