University of Wisconsin Chancellor Biddy Martin will have her first opportunity to get the scoop from students and staff at an ice cream social on Bascom Hill from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today.
The event comes just three days after Martin took the reigns from former Chancellor John Wiley.
UW spokesperson John Lucas said Martin will help serve ice cream and expects to meet students and staff and get their opinions about campus issues.
“Her hope is to get a chance to see a lot of people, have some quick conversations out there while she’s helping scoop ice cream,” Lucas said.
Babcock ice cream will be offered, including a new flavor available for the first time: “Strawbiddy Swirl,” named for the new chancellor.
UW junior JoAnne Poniatowski came up with the name, which is a vanilla flavor with strawberry slices, chocolate shavings and a strawberry swirl.
Poniatowski and Babcock Dairy Plant Manager Bill Klein chose the ingredients together.
“We were looking for something that we haven’t done before,” Klein said. “We started with the vanilla flavor, and we came up with chocolate-dipped strawberries.”
Klein said it is rare for Babcock to give an individual his or her own flavor.
“We do it after departments a lot, but not really for individual people,” Klein said. “It just doesn’t happen very often.”
Past flavor honorees have included UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, former Badgers running back Elroy Hirsch and Badgers basketball coach Bo Ryan.
Bucky Badger will make an appearance from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
The limit is one cup per person while supplies last, and other dietary options will be made available.
Lucas said Dean of Students Lori Berquam will hold a similar social event on Bascom Hill Oct. 9.
Her “PB&J with the Dean” event last September will be held again after it was successful in getting the word out about what the Office of the Dean of Students does and the importance of safety in downtown Madison, Lucas said.
Berquam said in a previous interview with The Badger Herald that the event may be a part of the “Safety 24/7” campaign, which launched last month.
