The University of Wisconsin’s senior class president-elect has been charged with a misdemeanor for stealing six bus tickets from the Memorial Union over spring break.
UW junior Oliver Delgado, elected for the 2008-09 year with 430 votes, said he tried to purchase two roundtrip tickets to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport so he and his roommate could catch an early morning flight to Puerto Rico. The Union bus travel desk was closed, and Delgado “didn’t know what to do,” he said.
“I didn’t go with the intention of stealing; that’s not who I am, and that’s not the way I was brought up,” he added.
A Van Galder Bus Company employee approached Delgado when he returned to O’Hare after break and asked for identification after the company tracked the tickets when the theft was reported. UW police officers went to his house March 27 where Delgado admitted to the theft. He later returned two of the tickets to UWPD, adding he was forced to steal all six tickets because they came bundled together.
He has not been arrested, but appeared in court to schedule an initial hearing.
Delgado attends UW on a full-tuition scholarship and said he has been involved on several leadership positions on campus.
“I definitely accept responsibility, and I know it wasn’t the best decision, but at the same time I hope that what I’ve been involved in on this campus — and even stuff that I continue to do — reflect on my character,” Delgado said.
Delgado said this is a “learning experience” and that he has no plans to resign his position.
Jeff Wright, Student Council representative and senior class president runner-up, said he cannot speak for the council but expects university officials to take some disciplinary action.
Wright added there are no bylaws in place to deal with such a situation, but if Student Council chooses to remove Delgado from office, there are three main options on the table: appoint the senior class vice president-elect, hold new elections or appoint the runner-up for the position.
According to court files, Delgado was charged with a misdemeanor for theft under $2,500 and has a set hearing for May 30.

What an asshole. Revoke his scholarship and take away his position. If you're reading this Delgado - you suck.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 7:10am):
I really hope he doesn't get away with this...
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 9:37am):
I have known him a while and he is one of the most insincere people you will ever meet.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 9:38am):
He needs to be removed -- no way should this guy be senior president in 08-09. Can he be kicked out of school?
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 9:45am):
"A learning experience?" Yeah, it will be once you are expelled and convicted and (hopefully) do a little time. Go back to LA with your punk-ass friends, Delgado.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 10:28am):
They should make him repay all the money he received for his scholarship. Stealing $222 in bus tickets to just because you wanted to save $15 and didn't know what to do because the store was closed isn't an excuse.
Just because someone is an "upstanding citizen," their large volunteer and community efforts should not cloud peoples' judgment in this matter. He should not get away with this.....
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 10:29am):
Don't buy his fast talk. THere was no reason for him to steal, you can buy those tickets on the bus. It was not a mistake but the shortcut of a thief who thinks he's entitled. Just cuz he does a million extra curricular activities does not buy him amnesty! Impeach him!!!
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 10:31am):
How could he steal tickets if the Union infodesk was closed? I mean, usually whenever the Union itself is open, you can buy tickets... strange.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 11:24am):
Hail to the thief!!
I don't buy his story for a second.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 11:36am):
He has a pattern of shady behavior! Ask his classmates and teachers!
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 11:48am):
This guy needs to be expelled. Period.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 1:18pm):
This petty ass crime... Oliver, man you deserve to keep your position and your scholarship...this quick-to-punish but slow-to-confess-my-own-mishaps social climate we live in is ridiculous. Lets be real, there are more people on this campus and in this world doing worse things than getting bus tickets they need to travel. WTF...UW-Madison's students need to grow up. Redemption is possible. BIG UPS TO ALL OLIVER'S HATERS. If you could have done it an thought you were getting away with it, there's NO DOUBT you would have...KEEP YA HEAD UP OLIVER. As you know, "1st they hail you, congratulate achievements, then they NAIL you to a burning cross like JESUS, MEETS the KKK, Betta Believe this, it's the only way, They are deceiving, they murder ya passion and leave you greiving, KILL YA SOUL AND GIVE YA LIFE NO MEANING!"...Love

this is hilarious. bless this f-ed up campus, i won't miss you.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 2:52pm):
Is his "apology" supposed to make it better? It's not like Puerto Rico was going anywhere. There's got to be something in his scholarship requirements about this that will get it revoked and given to more deserving people.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 7:56pm):
To 10:29...
Actually you can't buy those tickets on the bus. The tickets he stole can only be purchased at the info desk. If you buy tickets from the bus driver you wind up paying $15 more for a round trip.
To 10:31...
During spring break the info desk closed at 10pm every night. There was an event going on somewhere in the building that required it to stay open until 12am. Oliver was at that event.

Dude, no one's jumping to hate. Clearly a lot of people know him and think this is not a "mistake" but something done by an "insincere" and "shady" person. Plus, even if it was one little thing--ya have to be IRRESPONSIBLE to wait til the last minute to buy tickets, STUPID to not know you can buy them on the bus, and RECKLESS to go through with stealing. Even if it was one time, he should NOT represent this school!!
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 8:30pm):
I'm sure that everyone writing these ridiculous anonymous comments have never f-ed up or made a mistake before...
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 8:35pm):
I know this kid! He is irresponsible, super slippery, and will say anything to get by! I couldn't believe he won the election! He should be removed from office for this, but also because he has no character in general!
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 9:23pm):
1:18pm...seriously?...your lame.
take away his scholarship.."learning experience my a**"
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 10:43pm):
I don't get it... you can buy tickets on the bus... or online. What an idiot.
Anonymous (May 6, 2008 @ 11:24pm):
expelled for taking tickets? seems a bit harsh. What about a public apology and a reimbursement? It's interesting how you guys focus more on this kid the TOWERS kid that caused over $20K of damages and faces FELONY charges...interesting.
Anonymous (May 7, 2008 @ 1:40am):
throw this guy out of school, n damn right we are gonna throw him under the bus for this punk ass
Anonymous (May 7, 2008 @ 2:15am):
The Towers kid is already getting evicted and expelled.
Anonymous (May 7, 2008 @ 10:28am):
Oh no, $15 more?? Yeah, that makes stealing okay. You've totally convinced me.
Anonymous (May 8, 2008 @ 2:27pm):
He made a dumb mistake and got caught. That's the end of it. He's paying for it already and will go to court. I'm in his scholarship program, and our trainers and directors are sure to ream him out as well as his friends.
But he doesn't deserve to have his position as senior class pres. and his scholarship taken away. U people are ridiculous. There's people with positions of power on this campus who are not held accountable for far more serious things... as well as our politicians. Look at Bush. U dumb-ass college kids. I can't wait to graduate...
Anonymous (May 8, 2008 @ 6:45pm):
You people are all such HATERSSSSSSSSS! Act like you've never had a relapse in judgement. Find something better to do with your time people. This controversy was probably stirred up by the people who lost in the class president election. Oliver won fair and square. You people are hypocrites for making such a big deal...there are illegal things happening on this campus on a DAILY BASIS FAR WORSE. Worry about your finals haters.
Oh and good point about that kid from towers who caused about 20k in damages. Of course no one is going to write blogs about him...hmmm I wonder why?
Anonymous (May 8, 2008 @ 6:49pm):
SERIOUSLY??? THIS is what we chose to focus on??
