Former President Bill Clinton stumped for his wife, presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., on campus to nearly 2,000 students Thursday, calling her a “change-maker.”
In an hourlong speech, Clinton focused on the issues, complete with detailed policy plans and accounts of the senator’s past successes.
“She has always been in the solutions business,” Clinton said.
Paramount among the issues Clinton addressed was his wife’s health care plan.
“We have got to get these people in these big (insurance) pools and cut the paperwork down,” Clinton said, adding his wife would pay for it by allowing the tax cuts to the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans to expire.
“We all have to pay our fair share,” Clinton said.
Clinton also discussed the nation’s economic troubles at length, contrasting his time in office with the Bush administration.
“Compare the last seven years to the eight before it,” Clinton said.
He said eight million people worked their way out of poverty during his administration, while five million have fallen into poverty during Bush’s. He also said middle-class incomes rose by $6,000 on average during his two terms, but the median income has fallen by $1,000 after inflation in the last seven years.
“Meanwhile, health care costs have doubled, college education costs have exploded and everything related to energy, including gasoline and food, has gone up,” Clinton said. “People essentially have less money to buy things that cost more.”
Clinton’s also strongly criticized the Bush administration’s handling of the Iraq war.
“We can’t help them by staying there forever,” he said. “We are breaking the American military, and we cannot do it.”
He said his wife would help to restore America’s position in the world — that the United States would act with diplomacy first and use force only as a last resort.
“If you elect her, here is her message to the world: ‘America is back,’” Clinton said.
Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk introduced the former president.
“This building — you can smell it — has a lot of history,” Falk said of the Stock Pavilion, used for livestock events, where presidents as far back as Taft have spoken.
“This is the place where science, not politics, rules,” Falk said. “We are going to elect a president who believes in stem cell research and science.”
Students lined up outside to wait for the event starting a little after 11 a.m. University of Wisconsin freshman Kyle Emmer was part of the student-heavy crowd.
“I’ve never heard a political speaker talk before in person, but his speaking tactics were the top,” Emmer said. “Seeing him in person just made it 10 times better.”
Emmer said the fact that Clinton addressed a young generation “really got [him] going,” while UW freshman Kara Kunesh said the event felt like “history in the making,” and she hoped Clinton would become the first female president.
UW senior Adam Korn said he came to the event to see President Clinton, not to support his wife.
“I grew up with the Clinton White House, and I’m a big fan of Bill,” Korn said. “I personally am a Barack Obama supporter, but I wanted to hear what he has to say.”

clinton: 2000 obama: 20000
this round goes to obama.
I went to both Obama and Clinton, even briefly met Obama (far from being ‘insane’). Three days ago slightly favored Obama; three days later definitely Clinton. The Obama event was sickening, the frenzy and empty statements so off-putting. How can people fall for such nonsense year after year in every election? This is dangerous. Many in his defense have said that it was not practical to give a speech on policy to a large group of students. But Clinton did exactly that. You can run your campaign on trying to be a Bono, but the mindless adulation will eventually catch up with you. It did for me on Tuesday evening……..
9:12 - same here! though i always leaned towards Clinton, that sealed it for me. signed, sick of the rhetoric, ready for some plans
I echo that comment regarding obama. I found my self in the same situation. After much research i found my politics aligned more with Hillary’s policies, but i was open minded to Obama nonetheless. After that rally i felt really uncomfortable. As Bill said - this is a race about solutions not speeches. People seem to be hopping on the Obama wagon because its the fashionable thing to do. PLEASE, think for yourselves, think critically and think about the actual issues at hand! (also numbers of attendees have nothing to do with it, its about how big of a crowd the campaign is looking to address for media coverage. Bill clinton is capable of filling the Kohl Center)
To 9:12am anonymous: Did you really go to the Kohl center to hear what Obama’s policy proposals are? Why didn’t you just spend those 4 hours, say, reading them on the internet?
You can run your campaign from the top-down, like it’s always been done by millionaires like the Clintons, or you can run your campaign from the bottom-up. What kind of leadership do you want?
Please, anyone who wants to really know the issues, and where the candidates stand on them, needs to look it up online.

There is FAR more on that website than could be said in any speech he would have given. I think Obama realizes that with technology the way it is, speeches are becoming redundant. I, personally, want a president that I can trust, and that’s a good thing to take away from speeches. The Clintons are being more and more petty with every day that passes; Obama has always been respectful.
regarding the 9:12am anonymous post.

I couldn’t agree more.
There are other things that will catch up with you as well… www.politicalamnesia.blogspot.com
I do appreciate that Clinton (or rather Bill) is starting to talk policy. But I can’t help but feel that in both cases, the rhetoric and promises aren’t matching up with past history. e.g. Hillary was on the Board of Directors of Walmart, and should be seen as somewhat responsible for their current policies of sweatshop sourcing and labor and healthcare. Additionally, some of her campaign advisors operate union-busting firms. Hardly meets her pro-health care, pro-union, pro-little people rhetoric, does it.
regards to 12:31… what makes you think the clintons are petty? also, why is it you have to speculate on obama’s use of technology as opposed to speech-making?
the clintons are far from petty; bill said in his speech that he respects obama and thinks obama is an outstanding figure.
he encouraged people to vote for whoever they supported; and if i can follow your trend of speculation, a hillary/obama ticket would provide obama with more experience and insight so that he can eventually become a more influential leader of this country.
lastly-obama’s online issues are just about as vague as his speech was. why not look up hillary’s as well, just for shits and giggles?

A vote for Hillary is a vote for McCain — she would not beat him. Obama would
Spend as long as you want looking on Obama’s website, you won’t find any discussion of the LGBT community. Clinton on the other hand explicitly states that she will pass the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (after working hard to pass previous versions as a US Senator) and she will end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. If you voted No on the Ban in 2006 you should vote for Clinton.
It’s time for action not speeches. And Hillary Clinton can and will deliver.
it’s time for change and not the status quo.
hillary clinton: bush lite. bush league.
I already voted for Hillary here in Naples, Florida. Sadly, Senator Obama who says he wants to unite everyone, is working hard to stop 1.75 million Florida democrats from being counted. A lot of people are saying that it’s unfair and no one campaigned here but the truth is that Senator Obama was running ads on TV — no one else was. Also, everyone here thought that their votes would be counted — but only Hillary seems to be standing up for us. So, I guess I’m saying, don’t be taken in too easily by Senator Obama’s rhetoric — somethings are not always as pretty as his speeches. But everybody get out and vote — I’ll be at the BEACH!!!
‘Clinton on the other hand explicitly states that she will pass the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (after working hard to pass previous versions as a US Senator)’
a president can’t ‘pass’ anything.
Yep, if gay rights and abortion rights are your top two priorities, then definitely vote Hillary. If, like the rest of America, you are concerned about the economy, the war, fair trade, the environment and the problems of all working families across America, Obama is your man.
I can see how that is a tough choice for downtown Madisonians :-)
I have a question:
Since Hillary voted for the war in Iraq, Why isn’t Chelsea fighting in that war?
Guess, for the Clintons, it’s ok to vote for a war as long as other parents’ children die in them.
Hillary voted for the war in Iraq.
She now claims that she didn’t really think her vote would result in war, even though every peace group knew…Bush had all our ships there…more than a 100,000 of our troops…all poised to invade.
….but Hilliary claims she didn’t realize that she was voting for war.
And recently, she voted to authorize Bush to attack Iran (“fool me once…Fool me twice”?)
Hillary is not stupid, she knew what she was voting for.
(bad judgement?; or in bed with the Neocon pro-war lobbies? Does it matter??
A vote for Hillary is a vote for war (and more wars).
Me, I vote for Barack Obama!
This country needs a change!
Do we really know Barack Obama?

I doubt the unfolding of Obama will uphold an agent of change, fresh & pure authenticity regardless of how much we want and need to “hope” for it.
These findings are not easy on the eyes and ears and will only grow at the hands of Rebublicans.
Re: Look for Obama’s plans on his website:
Clinton posted a message of condolence re: The Illinois killings front and top of her home page.
I could not help but notice that Illinois senator Obama’s home page did not mention it on home page and no link if it happened to be buried anywhere else.

Here’s a great video made by students about why Hillary is the way to go. Check it out - plans for school debt, health care and more.
Real Solutions for Real Students
Hillary’s Plans are impressive:
Hillary Clinton’s economic blueprint to restore the American middle class includes:
• Lowering taxes for middle class families. • Providing quality, affordable health care to every American. • Making college accessible and affordable. • Confronting the growing problems in the housing market. • Bolstering retirement security by promoting savings and investment. • Returning to fiscal responsibility and moving towards balanced budgets. • Harnessing innovation to create the high-wage jobs of the 21st century. • Creating a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund to jumpstart research and development of alternative energies. • Strengthening unions and ensuring our trade laws work for all Americans. • Developed a Three-Step Plan to End the War in Iraq
Hillary Clinton’s Health Care plan includes everyone:
• Affordable: Unlike the current health system where insurance premiums send people into bankruptcy, the plan provides tax credits for working families to help them cover their costs. The tax credits will ensure that working families never have to pay more than a limited percentage of their income for health care. • Available: No discrimination. The insurance companies can’t deny you coverage if you have a pre-existing condition. • Reliable: It’s portable. If you change or lose your job, you keep your health care.
Hillary Clinton’s plans to promote energy independence, address global warming, and transform our economy includes:
• A new cap-and-trade program that auctions 100 percent of permits alongside investments to move us on the path towards energy independence; • An aggressive comprehensive energy efficiency agenda to reduce electricity consumption 20 percent from projected levels by 2020 by changing the way utilities do business, catalyzing a green building industry, enacting strict appliance efficiency standards, and phasing out incandescent light bulbs; • A $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund, paid for in part by oil companies, to fund investments in alternative energy. The SEF will finance one-third of the $150 billon ten-year investment in a new energy future contained in this plan; • Doubling of federal investment in basic energy research, including funding for an ARPA-E, a new research agency modeled on the successful Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency • Aggressive action to transition our economy toward renewable energy sources, with renewables generating 25 percent of electricity by 2025 and with 60 billion gallons of home-grown biofuels available for cars and trucks by 2030; • 10 “Smart Grid City” partnerships to prove the advanced capabilities of smart grid and other advanced demand-reduction technologies, as well as new investment in plug-in hybrid vehicle technologies; • An increase in fuel efficiency standards to 55 miles per gallon by 2030, and $20 billion of “Green Vehicle Bonds” to help U.S. automakers retool their plants to meet the standards; • A plan to catalyze a thriving green building industry by investing in green collar jobs and helping to modernize and retrofit 20 million low-income homes to make them more energy efficient; • A new “Connie Mae” program to make it easier for low and middle-income Americans to buy green homes and invest in green home improvements; • A requirement that all publicly traded companies report financial risks due to climate change in annual reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission; and • Creation of a “National Energy Council” within the White House to ensure implementation of the plan across the Executive Branch. o A requirement that all federal buildings designed after January 20, 2009 will be zero emissions buildings.
Hillary’s plans to help veterans:
• Enact a GI Bill of Rights for the Twenty-First Century. • Provide Affordable and Quality Health Care for All Veterans. • Ensure All Veterans Receive the Benefits They Have Earned and the Assistance They Need — Right from the Start. • Extend Hiring Preferences to Veterans-friendly Contractors. • Expand the Helmets to Hardhats Program. • Give Veterans Additional Opportunities to Serve. • Reduce Homelessness among Veterans. • Expand Veterans Homeownership.
Hillary’s vision for rural America will:
• Create a Strategic Energy Fund that would inject $50 billion into research, development and deployment of renewable energy, energy efficiency, ethanol, and other homegrown biofuels. • Expand access to capital and strategic advice for rural entrepreneurs and small businesses and bring together businesses, community colleges, and four-year universities to ensure workers have the training needed to compete in the global economy. • Ensure that we get broadband to rural Americans who don’t have access now. • Enact her American Health Choices Plan, a plan to provide affordable, high quality health care for all Americans. • Fight vertical integration, which has crippled American agriculture, by establishing mandatory Country of Origin Labeling for all U.S. products; pushing for a ban on packer ownership of livestock; having her Justice Department investigate agriculture consolidations; and ensure that the small- and medium-sized producers compete on level playing field with corporate agribusiness. • Target our commodity payment programs so that family farms — not corporate farms — are the key beneficiaries. Work to expand market opportunities for farmers through innovative, direct-to-consumer marketing and niche markets to provide U.S. farmers with more options for selling their products. • Expand and enhance conservation programs in the Farm Bill and support carbon credit trading for producers who incorporate environmentally friendly farming practices.
Hillary Clinton’s plans for investing in ideas and creating high-wage jobs of the future:
• Boost support for multidisciplinary research in areas such as the intersection of bio, info, and nanotechnologies. • Increase the NIH budget by 50% over 5 years and aim to double it over 10 years. • Increase investment in the non-health applications of biotechnology in order to fuel 21st century industry. • Direct the federal agencies to award prizes in order to accomplish specific innovation goals. • Triple the number of NSF fellowships and increase the size of each award by 33 percent. • Support initiatives to bring more women and minorities into the math, science, and engineering professions. • Support initiatives to establish leadership in broadband. • Overhaul the R&E tax credit to make the U.S. a more attractive location for high-paying jobs. • Restore integrity to science policy.
Hillary’s Plan to Create a Green Jobs Revolution: Creating New, High-Wage Jobs of the Future:
• Modernize 20 Million Low-Income Homes to Improve Energy Efficiency • Invest $5 billion in accelerated energy efficiency and alternative energy investments to jumpstart green collar job growth. Senator Clinton believes that by immediately implementing components of her comprehensive plan to transition to a green, clean economy, we can both jumpstart green collar jobs and jumpstart our long-term transition to energy independence as well. • Create a $50 Billion Strategic Energy Fund and Demand that Oil Companies Invest in Clean Energy. • Raise Fuel Economy Standards. Hillary has proposed a plan to raise fuel economy standards to 40 mpg by 2020 and 55 mpg by 2030. • Help Automakers Retool Plants. Hillary would authorize $20 billion in low-interest “Green Vehicle Bonds” in order to provide immediate help to retool the oldest auto plants to meet her strong efficiency standards. • Promote Plug-In Hybrids (PHEV). • Create a Green Building Fund to Make Public Buildings More Energy Efficient. Hillary will dedicate $1 billion annually to states to enable them to make grants or low-interest loans to improve energy efficiency in public buildings, such as schools. • Train “Green Collar” Workers. We will need skilled workers to install the solar panels, build the hybrid transmissions, and seal the holes in our public buildings to make them more efficient.
