University of Wisconsin Alumni Student Board has agreed to terms securing rapper Talib Kweli’s performance at the All-Campus Party in April.
All-Campus Party co-director, Justin McGivern, said the deal with Kweli is “95 percent done,” adding “details just need to get worked out, contracts need to be signed.”
According to Rochelle Affias, All-Campus Party co-director, if the deal works out, Kweli will perform at UW Field House the night of Wed., April 23. Every All-Campus Party event is free for UW students.
“I’m really excited,” McGivern said. “I’ve been a fan of his for a long time.”
Affias said the party committee is excited about bringing in such a big hip-hop name. “He really wanted to come to a Big Ten school,” Affias added.
Hip-hop artist Common headlined the All-Campus Party in 2006 and was very successful, Affias said. Kweli is widely respected in the music community and has performed with many superstars, she said.
In the past, Kweli collaborated with big industry names like Kanye West and Common, among others.
“We hope all the students are excited,” Affias said. “He’s up-and-coming.”
Affias and McGivern said most artists do not book events more than 90 days in advance, making it difficult to coordinate security for the event with UW Police Department. “We’re really proud we have this thing going so early,” McGivern said.
The big Kweli concert will come in the middle of a weeklong series of events hosted by WASB. The week begins with a kick-off concert Monday, April 21. The acts for that concert have yet to be decided, McGivern said.
According to Affias, Kweli will bring another hip-hop act to open for him. The winner of the third All-Campus Idol contest and Marcus Monroe, an extreme juggler, will also open for Kweli.
Monroe juggles fire and other dangerous objects. He said he will bring something new and exciting to the show. “I always try to do new stuff,” Monroe added.
“Performing before someone like Talib Kweli is absolutely new to me,” Monroe said.
The All-Campus Idol winner will be crowned April 22, Affias said. Auditions for the contest will begin three weeks before the Kweli concert, and the winner will be crowned in a showdown between the 10 finalists.
The Idol winner will be selected by a combination of student and judge votes. Students will be able to vote at the showdown, on the Internet or via text message.
WASB is currently not releasing the cost of the All-Campus Party .

I wonder if he’s here because we did so well on the eventful.com challenge to get him here. I guess that might explain why he willingly booked an even so far out.

Events like this shows us that UW-Madison is not always just “liberal” talk. Talib Kweli is a socio-political artist, unapologetic for his expressions for justice and democracy. Good job UW alumn.
