After seven years as head of the University of Wisconsin, John Wiley announced Friday he will step down as chancellor effective September 2008.

Wiley, who will turn 66 in March, said he is not retiring from the university and will stay on board to help with fundraising efforts, particularly with the East Campus renovation project.

Next fall will be the "perfect time for transition," Wiley said.

Wiley’s wife and daughter, a UW senior, moved out of the chancellor’s home last year so the house could undergo a wide range of renovations, and Wiley said Friday the family never intended to move back in.

Additionally, Wiley said the best time is halfway through a budget period, and 2008 will be midway through the 2007-2009 biennial cycle.

The UW System plans to "move swiftly on a national search" for the next chancellor, UW System Board of Regents President Mark Bradley said.

David Walsh, a current regent and former president of the board, will chair the committee that will make the final recommendation for the next head of UW-Madison.

Lori Berquam, UW Dean of Students, said Wiley has done some “amazing things” for the university.

“I hope the next chancellor — whoever it is — is as responsive and accessible to students as Chancellor Wiley has been,” Berquam said, adding she will miss Wiley’s “brilliance and wit.”

Wiley began as chancellor in January 2001, succeeding David Ward. Ward and Wiley both got their administrative starts under former chancellor Donna Shalala.

After joining the electrical engineering department in 1975, Wiley served as associate dean of the engineering school from 1986-1989, dean of the graduate school from 1989-1994 and provost from 1994-2000.

Get ready for Chancellor Farrell!!

Anonymous (December 7, 2007 @ 2:43pm):

The highlights on news.wisc.edu are quite generous.

Oh no, now all these loud mouthed whiners with their Facebook groups about Wiley, and their trivial "camp" outside Wiley's office nonsense are gonna think that they had something to do with this.

It is so sad when the TRUST'astafarians get such a false validation because it will just make them think that they are not meaningless and keep them from recognizing that the only reason they have time to whine is because they are privileged kids.

Who thinks they had anything to do with this? SLAC, CAN, etc, had their beef with Wiley, but it's not like they think him leaving will magically fix all their problems. Those groups built relationships with him and his staff, and now they'll have to start over fresh. The conflict was more with him as Chancellor than with him as Wiley, and the same problems existed with Ward and Shalala, and will likely continue to some degree with the next Chancellor. Besides, we've all been anticipating this for some time, and Wiley had mentioned before stepping down after this school year.

Not to mention, are you privileged because you have time to whine too?

Good riddance to Wiley. His time as chan-
cellor has been a total fiasco for UW.
Wiley completely mishandled the Barrows case,
and that damaged UW's reputation. He did a
poor job of handling the legislature, and
that resulted in severe budget cuts. He
even had Governor Doyle attacking UW and
demanding that Kevin Barrett be fired. Cam-
pus morale has collapsed and everyone is
really down here as a result. The new chancellor has major challenges to face.

Anonymous (December 9, 2007 @ 10:33pm):

I agree. Wiley was a total boob and had to
go. We are in real trouble at UW-Madison
because of Wiley's bumbling. The next chan-
cellor must be a major improvement if this
institution is to survive.
