Students waking up Saturday morning found a steady stream of snow falling on the Madison area.

As of noon Saturday, most downtown streets and sidewalks were covered in snow, making travel by both car and foot difficult for people choosing to brave the conditions.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Madison area through 6 a.m. Sunday, as “moderate to heavy snow” is predicted to blanket the area all Saturday afternoon.

A total of about 4-5 inches is expected from the storm, as the snow and sleet will eventually turn into freezing rain later in the day. Ice accumulation in addition to the snow “will result in a treacherous and dangerous combination for travel conditions” Saturday night, the National Weather Service reports.

The storm is also affecting other areas of the Midwest. On Saturday morning, the Des Moines, Iowa airport shut down after a United Airlines plane skidded on a runway as it was preparing for takeoff.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
