A plan to devote $3 million to boost the Allied Drive neighborhood was introduced by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
George Twigg, Cieslewicz's communications director, said funding from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund will be used as part of the overall development of the Allied Drive area.
The development, Twigg said, would include the destruction of 11 old buildings and the construction of new buildings and infrastructure.
"It is an important project that will bring some high-quality affordable housing to a neighborhood that really needs it," Twigg said.
However, opponents of Cieslewicz's plan said too much money is being devoted to one project.
Ald. Satya Conway, District 12, said she wants to take the project step by step to learn more about it and what proportion of the budget will come from city money.
"The current question is should we take it out of the affordable house trust fund," Conway said. "I am inclined to think that this is too much of what is in the affordable house trust fund to use it all for one project."
Conway said it remains a possibility that money from this fund will be allocated toward the Allied Drive neighborhood if it is a loan, but added she wants to see what the entire picture of the project looks like.
Twigg said the funding for this project will be discussed as part of the overall budget process in the next few weeks.
