UW-Eau Claire debuts conservative paper

A new student paper at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will offer a conservative viewpoint to balance what the editor-in-chief calls "liberal saturation" pervading existing campus news publications.
Kristy LeTourneau got together with two members of UW-Eau Claire College Republicans to create the Riverfront Review, a conservative alternative to the other publications on campus."We have a lot of papers on campus that are either liberal or won't even touch the subject of conservatism, just because it's looked down on on our campus," LeTourneau said. "So we decided to create our own paper so that other people could read it and not feel ashamed to be a conservative on campus."
The first issue, published Sept. 24, was four pages long and contained mainly opinion pieces.
LeTourneau said although the first issue was not perfect, they were eager to get their opinions out into the public.
In addition, the paper is already expanding. LaTourneau said the Riverfront Review will be expanded to eight pages and will soon have multiple sections. LeTourneau said they plan to run stories at the local and national level about sports and health.
The paper will be published once every three weeks and will be structured like standard newspapers — the only difference being its conservative viewpoint.
The Riverfront Review joins two other publications on the UW-Eau Claire campus, including The Flip Side and The Spectator.
The Spectator is the largest and oldest publication on the campus, according to managing editor Brain Reisinger. The newspaper was first published in 1923 and is currently published twice per week completely independent from UW-Eau Claire funding.
Reisinger said The Spectator first ran a story about the Riverfront Review before its editorial board issued an opinion on the new paper "so students could be informed."
Reisinger added The Spectator’s editorial board decided to welcome other publications onto campus as they provide more places for students to voice their thoughts.
The editorial board, Reisinger said, did challenge the new paper to construct news coverage independent from their editorial department and with no political bias.
Despite being welcomed by The Spectator’s editorial board, Reisinger said he was unsure about the Riverfront Review's future as a UW-Eau Claire publication, adding it took The Spectator nearly 80 years to become fully independent from the university.
"I commend them for stepping out and saying there needs to be more media," Reisinger said. "We wish them the best of luck."

I for one am a Dem and I am ashamed of the comment before me. If the Republicans want to start their own slanted paper, I welcome it, as long as they admit they are biased, go for it.
Please believe me, this guy does not represent the vast majority of Dems. Most of us are mature enough to refrain from name calling and we know full well that this is no way to win or even engage in a meaningful discussion.

I work at UWEC. The new developments are the ‘paper’ being under fire for plagiarism. The two students involved both wrote in the campus newspaper ‘The Spectator.’ One claimed no mistakes were made and the other blamed the mistakes on just starting out. (She did not know that plagiarism is wrong?) Then she claimed she used her own picture for the plagiarized article, attributed to FOX News, on the CA wildfires. What she actually means is that she stole that from somewhere else. (She was never there)
Where is the funding from? Probably some conservative groups that want to spam campuses with conservative propaganda. Is this news? No, the paper will go down in flames. It’s pretty much the joke of UWEC.
