The University of Wisconsin Interfraternity Council failed to meet quorum Wednesday on an appeal hearing for two UW fraternities accused of hazing.

The Greek Judicial Board has charged Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Alpha Mu with allegedly committing violations on policies regarding hazing and social events, according to a GJB decision.

As a punishment, the GJB decided to suspend Alpha Epsilon Pi and expel Sigma Alpha Mu, though the fraternities are allowed to operate during the appeal process as if no sanctions were given, according to Fraternity and Sorority Program Advisor Jeffrey Benson.

If IFC decides to uphold the GJB's decision, Alpha Epsilon Pi would have all its privileges suspended for the fall 2007 semester, including the right to hold social and brotherhood events and rush new members.

In the spring 2008 semester, the fraternity would have a modified suspension under which the frat would be allowed to rush under certain conditions but not to hold social events of any kind.

In fall 2008, Alpha Epsilon Pi would have its membership privileges reinstated with limited conditions, being obliged to provide specific rush and initiation details to the Greek Life Office.

If IFC decides to uphold GJB's decision on Sigma Alpha Mu, the fraternity would have all membership privileges lost until spring 2010.

According to Benson, the Judicial Board was unable to hear either appeal until now because both incidents happened at the end of the spring 2007 semester, when the council went on break due to finals week and summer break.

Judicial Board decisions are open record, while incident reports and allegations are confidential information. The allegations were filed through the UW Greek system website, Benson said.

It is unclear whether the 22 voting members of IFC have arranged a future meeting time.

Alpha Epsilon Pi President Jared Steinberg and Sigma Alpha Mu President David Lank did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment, and IFC President Drew Willert declined comment when contacted by The Badger Herald late Wednesday.

What the hell is the GJB? That's the first time I've ever heard that acronym.
It's J-Board.
Just like it's not ASMSJ, it's not GJB.

Also, neither trial was an appeals case... they were direct charges.

"Alpha Epsilon Pi President Jared Steinberg and Sigma Alpha Mu President David Lank did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment, and IFC President Drew Willert declined comment when contacted by The Badger Herald late Wednesday."

Oh yeah, the greek system, real open process.

quit lumping the two frats together...they are two separate cases with different allegations that were submitted at different times. The only thing they have in common is that their appeals are happening close to each other, not at the same time.

you'd think if it were such an important issue that this wouldn't happen..."Interfraternity Council failed to meet quorum Wednesday"

clearly the IFC sucks

The Greek system is an open system. The Daily Cardinal had the whole article.

I wonder why the Badger Herald didn't get the story. Maybe because they burned their bridges by depicting fraternity men and women giving eachother oral sex and plotting to ruin the gay fraternity.

Anonymous (October 4, 2007 @ 3:57pm):

You are criticizing the Badger Heralds comic on hazing, in an article about a frat being investigated for hazing?

Maybe the Greek's should fix their hazing problem instead of attacking the satire about their hazing.

Anonymous (October 7, 2007 @ 11:41pm):

Maybe you didn't read the article. The Greeks are prosecuting the fraternity.

Anonymous (October 8, 2007 @ 1:27pm):

I read the article. I commend the Pan-Greek Judicial Board trying to do something, but the Greeks are slamming the Badger Herald for satirizing the situation.

Trying to control what the student media prints is not what the greeks should be doing. The image problem is more than an image problem if you know what I mean.
