Officials from a University of Wisconsin fraternity will meet with university administrators Friday to discuss recent allegations of racial profiling by the UW Police Department.

Gus Garcia, Lambda Theta Phi Foundation national chairman, said he was previously scheduled to give a presentation on topics of civil rights in Madison Saturday, but decided he would also meet with university officials in light of the recent incidents involving the fraternity.

A fraternity party on Sept. 15, which was intended to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, was called off due to safety concerns, according to UWPD Assistant Chief Dale Burke.

Burke said most of the police department was busy patrolling campus after the football game against the Citadel the night of the event, and the party could have introduced a "crowd control issue."

Fraternity members, however, said the police seemed worried about the musical genres played during the party — hip-hop in particular — and suspected racial profiling on the part of UWPD.

According to one of the organization's attorneys, James Cueva, who will also attend Friday's meeting, the group is waiting for a formal apology from a high-standing UW official, and is looking to discuss ways to avoid similar problems in the future during Friday's meeting.

UW spokesperson John Lucas, however, said the university has no plans to apologize.

"We're very willing to work with the Lambdas, and any other campus group, to make a successful large-scale event," Lucas said. "However, because we truly don't believe the university has done anything wrong, we do not plan to issue a formal apology."

Lucas added it is part of the university's pledge to work with groups to prevent reoccurrences.

Garcia said the Lambdas will persist in doing whatever they need to do to obtain an official apology.

"We're getting it one way or another," Garcia said. "We're acting in a more civilized way before we take more drastic actions."

Garcia said although UW has invested in promoting a more diverse community, the campus administration is not ready to accept students from minority backgrounds.

"If you get diversity and you're not prepared for it, why are you trying to promote something you're not able to handle or understand?" he said.

In other news, Garcia said his previously planned presentation Saturday will be on civil and immigrant rights and diversity, mostly from a Latin perspective.

"We're going to speak about how society must adapt in order to accept diversity and Latin contribution in American history," Garcia said.

According to Garcia, the talk will not reference the recent incidents involving Lambda Theta Phi, though he will not decline comment if necessary.

"If there are students asking for it, I'll answer," he added.

Garcia's presentation, sponsored by UW Lambda Theta Phi members, will take place in Ingraham Hall at 3:30 p.m.

I have to say that it is ridiculous that the party got canceled, but it has ZERO to do with race. As a member of another fraternity on campus, I can tell you that police cancel our parties all the time, they no longer allow us on our front porch on game days, and set our capacity 250 people under what it actually is. It is unfair and it sucks, but it’s just the way things are now…thanks to Officer Fiore.

The race/minority card is played wayyyy too much on this campus. Don’t waste UWs time.

Garcia will never get an “I’m sorry” out of the Chancellor’s Office or the news spin crew (Lucas, Nagy) whether or not what they did was wrong or right.

But, think about it from the point of view of Chief Burke: it’s football Saturday after the game, and thousands of people are drinking, carousing, and milling about. He’s short staffed. He wants to keep everyone safe. Better safe than sorry. What would you do?

as a proud member of the “colored” population at UW, I have to agree with 9:17 stop pulling the race card out on the cancelled party. It’s not as big of a deal as y’all are making it. Calm down, I’m sure you just moved the party to a brother’s house and got drunk. Suck it up and drop it already!!!

Maybe they just fear another “try to fit 2,000 people in a 500 people sized room” fiasco?

All of the people that have made comments do not know or understand everything that is going on with this issue. No one has ‘pulled the race card’. Comments that the University and University Police made prior to the cancellation have led members of Lambda Theta Phi to believe that the cancellation was racially motivated.

Initially, the University stated that the party must be cancelled because both Lambda Theta Phi and Alpha Phi Alpha did not get flyer approve. The need for flyer approval was not in the contract, nor have other organizations been asked to get flyer approval before an event.

During this time, UW Police were also expressing concerns with the type of music that would be played.

When the flyer approval situation was not enough, the UW Police then said there were issues with capacity. They used the event guest list for the Facebook event as a marker of how many people would come. Based on that, they said the event would be over capacity.

The UW and UW Police then raised concerns that non-Union members would be allowed into the event. Even though several events each year are, open to the public.

Lastly, when all was said and done, the UW and UW Police came forward with concerns over the type of music that would be played.

This does have to race. Hip-Hop, Rap and R&B are most often played at event that is targeted toward minorities, such as this event was.

It is unfair for those not associated with the event or know the going-ons to make inaccurate comments. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to make comments concerning the Brothers of Lambda Theta Phi and alcohol. This event was intended to help promote the Lambda Theta Phi and simply ‘moving it to a Brother’s house’ would not have had the same effect.

Lastly, the Univeristy will not allow mainstream Greeks to have parties on their porch because of the open consumption of alcohol. It’s easy to say that the race card is played too much when you’re a White person and do not face this type of discrimination.

okay you know what, I’m sorry for giving the comment that they probably went to a brothers house and got drunk. But please do answer me this (11:53 p.m. who seems to be an involded person). Why is it that The “Lambdas” want people to jump on thier bandwagon and support thme in thier fight, when none of those guys showed up at the Walk-Out to show support for the Jena 6 case. I mean if I am taking your opinion and coinciding that yes the Lambdas were treated wrong and racially profiled, wouldn’t it be apprpriate for one to assume that they are against racism in general. And if that is that case why didn’t I see any of them there. Is it that they think they are the only one’s who go through this injustice, nad that no one else matters. Do they feel that they are dominate to other minories, which would then make them a racist themselves. And don’t try to tell me that “how would I know if a Lambda guy was there” I would because I do not only know of the Lambdas but I know the people who are a part of the fraternity. Once I can get a good answer, and I don’t mean they had class/work (that’s just a comp out considering it was a walk-out) as to why they don’t support others in thier fight for injustice, then will I go and “jump on the bandwagon” and support their efforts for an apology.

In response to September 26 5:16 writer:

I am not associated with Lambda Theta Phi, however, also as a proud student of color, specifically a Latina, who is politically active; I have been keep very taps on what is going on with this situation. From what I have gathered the Lambdas have not been making comments to the media personally, everything has been through their legal counsel. I am assuming that the Lambdas are not able to make comments, for whatever reason, and maybe this has something to do with why they were not present at the Jena 6 walk out.

One more thing, I personally have not been solicited to 'jump on the Lambdas bandwagon'. I don't know if any such solicitations have been made to anyone. I simply see them fighting something they see as unfair. I think many students, especially students of color, face things at the University that are unfair. I am happy and PROUD to see an organization doing something about!

Making no comments and not doing the walk out…there is no connection. There were over 200 people there and I know for a fact that reporters did not go up to every student that attended and asked for the stance on different racial situations that have come to surface. And say if they did ask, they still would have no obligation to answer, they can merely say no comment.

I would like to correct you on one comment you made. "From what I have gathered the Lambdas have not been making comments to the media personally, everything has been through their legal counsel. "I have been following this case as well, and if my eyes are not mistaken I saw a current active member of the fraternity on a news program (can't remember the exact date though) pleading his case of racism.

The bandwagon comment I made was not to be taken as a formal request to support the fraternity and their battle with the UW police. I will rephrase that, on a day in and day out biases I either run into a Lambda or one of the LTA (their sorority sisters) members and instead of an informal (friendly) "hi, what's up" I get "did you hear they or we are fighting the 'man'. Are you in or out?" I'm sure they are not going up to people they are not affiliated with, or not casual acquaintances with and asking "are you in or out."

Have you gotten a flyer to hear their founding father "Gus Garcia" speak on Saturday? I got one, and I have yet to find anyone in my dorm that has gotten one as well. Mind you that my dorm holds about 600 residents (mostly of the Anglo background). And since they are of the Anglo background, wouldn't it be logical for one to think that they want to get the word out to them and let them here your side of perceived racism?

Dear proud member Sept. 26 @ 6:39

First off, I do not appreciate your use of that phrase "colored" student, and I think it was pretty ignorant of you to say that. As a fellow student of color, I understand that you were using the phrase in a joking manner, as one commonly used amongst students of color, or at least I hope that is what you meant in doing so. Regardless, it was neither the time nor the place, and other students may not have realized your intention in using the phrase in they way you did. Additionally, I would think that as a fellow student of color on this campus and someone who obviously cares about and is working toward justice regarding the Jena 6 incident, you would be more sympathetic to the injustices faced by fellow minority students on this campus. Maybe you have been lucky and have not experienced discrimination on this campus in your time here thus far, but I know that I have, along with many other students of color. For you to say that the race card doesn't belong here and for The Lambdas to just "suck it up and drop it already" is to trivialize my experiences with racism on this campus, as well as my friends, and any other student of color or person who has experienced discrimination on this campus for that matter. Furthermore, it seems like you’re missing the bigger picture: racism is very prevalent on this campus. You say you agree that the race card doesn't apply for this incident, but you never really say why, so I'd like to hear your reasoning. Finally, you really need to stop exaggerating and inferring things that neither apply nor make sense. I am referring to you saying that they must think they are dominant to other minorities or that they think they are the only ones who go through injustice. I read that 200 people showed up to the rally, so does this mean that any student of color who did not show up to the rally thinks they or their race are dominant as well? Using your logic, it must. I guess I will leave it at that for now, but I will conclude by saying that if you ever experience racial discrimination on this campus, make sure you take your own advice and "calm down, suck it up and drop it."

Hello Sept 28, 2:05

Well I guess my playing devils advocate has gone on far enough, I wanted to puch the issue and push peoples buttons so that anyone would be able to come in, read what i posted, and pick apart what I was saying. I wanted people (like yourself) to step up to the plate and pick point my errors/flaws in reasoning. I am quite impressed with your respones, honestly I thought that, with a growing population of students of color on this campus, that I would elicit more reponses. But it plain to see that our peers(of all ethnicities) on this campus are more infactuated with writing derogatory shout outs, rather then getting in debates about moral and immoral justice. I would like to conclude with an apology to the members of Lambda Theta Phi for making comments that were tasteless. I have nothing against you group of men, but simply wanted to a simple study(field test) with a couple of freinds of mine and see what the results were.

Okay yeah, 12:23 nice job at trying to be me. I have no apologies for my comments, just like the universtiy does not have any for the Lambdas. But I will get back to this issue later on. Class is begining, but be assured that the “real” OP will be back
