Judiciary mulls over new hires

The Associated Students of Madison Student Judiciary met Friday afternoon to discuss the elections of future members, its first ruling of the academic year and to propose a new mandatory dress code.

Three individuals were recently hired to fill vacancies in the Student Elections Commission, said Associate Justice and SEC Chair Leah Moe. These individuals will be trained Monday in preparation for the fall election.

The SEC consists of two people from SJ and seven individuals without any Associated Students of Madison affiliation.

Also on the meeting agenda was the future election of the SEC Vice Chair.

According to Moe, new justices will be hired in the next few weeks, and one individual from that pool will be elected as the new vice chair.

Moe added the new vice chair would be an SJ member.

SJ also discussed its first ruling — released Sept. 1 — involving funding for an event to be hosted by the Panhellenic Association.

Vice Chief Justice Shaun Hernandez said the Panhellenic Association's grant request would be decided by ASM, with the date still to be determined.

The justices also discussed revising the code of conduct, including instating a business casual dress code.

According to Chief Justice Sol Grosskopf, SJ can write their own bylaws and codes of conduct at the start of every new year under ASM bylaws.

Hernandez thought it was a good idea to discuss the dress code, and Moe said the business casual dress code adds a degree of professionalism to SJ.

Grosskopf supported the revision and acknowledged dressing up shows a sense of respect.

"We need to hold ourselves at a higher standard when we are amongst ourselves," Grosskopf said.

The resolution to the code of conduct for business casual dress code would be passed at the next meeting Sept. 16.

There was also a motion passed by SJ to have meetings at 7 p.m. Sundays, as opposed to weekdays when they are traditionally held, due to other commitments and scheduling conflicts.

Grosskopf said the meeting was very productive.

"We got everything we hoped to accomplish done, and we look forward to a successful semester," Grosskopf said.
