A 23-year-old Madison woman was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted Saturday morning after leaving a local bar.
According to a report from the Madison Police Department, the victim was leaving a downtown bar at closing time when she ended up in a van and was "violently sexually assaulted" in the vehicle after being driven to another location.
The suspects, according to the report, are two Hispanic males, one in his early 20s with an average build and a dark T-shirt and jeans.
MPD Public Information Officer Mike Hanson said the victim was treated at a local hospital and has since been released. The MPD and University of Wisconsin Communications do not yet know if the victim was a UW student.
This is the second campus-area sexual assault reported in the past week. Two unknown men allegedly assaulted a 21-year-old UW student on the 1000 block of Spring Street March 3. That case is also still under investigation, and no suspects have been arrested.
Hanson said it is not yet known if this assault can be connected with others in the area.
"From our standpoint, we are taking this investigation seriously and are trying to figure out what happened," Hanson said. "It would be too early to connect this with other assaults at this point."
Ald. Judy Olson, District 6, whose district encompasses the 500 block of East Wilson Street, said this neighborhood has occasionally seen problems with assaults.
"It's not been frequent; it's certainly not been routine, but I think most people who live there or frequent the entertainment spots usually know to be careful, not walk alone and know what's around you," Olson said. "It always comes as a shock and a reminder that we have more work to do."
Olson said the city's new Downtown Safety Plan, which was created in part to prevent the recent increase in assaults and muggings, might need to be revisited in the future to expand its target area. Currently, the plan focuses on the campus and State Street area.
According to the police report, when the van stopped after picking up the victim the night of the incident, one suspect went inside a residence, while the other agreed to take the woman home. However, the report said the suspect instead drove the victim to another location, sexually assaulted her, and then dropped the woman off on the 500 block of East Wilson Street.
"The majority of sexual assaults occur between acquaintances," Hanson said. "For this to be a stranger is outside the norm, but then for it to be unique is the fact that they're then transporting them elsewhere."
As of press time, no arrests have been made in this investigation. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the MPD or Crime Stoppers.

This is ridiculous. It seems like every week there is another Madison sexual assault. Is this city safe for women anymore?
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 4:20am):
This is what happens when we elect local leadership more focused on referendum about the Iraq War than keeping us safe.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 5:33am):
Mike Hanson is right about the majority of assaults being acquaintance assault. Those usually don't get trumpeted in the headlines as much as these stranger assaults, which do seem to be increasing. Are there any hard statistics on this?

"Is this city safe for women anymore?"
It's certainly safe for hyperbole.

"the victim was leaving a downtown bar at closing time when she ended up in a van "
Ended up in a van? Accepting rides from strangers isn't a great idea.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 9:34am):
I couldnt agree more with the comment at 4:20AM. Also, who is accepting rides in vans?

She was too drunk and too stupid to know what she was getting herself into! She did nothing to deserve to be attacked but still, I find it impossible to sympathize with her. Why was she allowed to go alone with these guys? Where the hell were her friends? Some friends!

wow

Accepting rides with strangers is on a par with leaving a downtown bar by one's self at bar time. Call a friend or a taxi. As an alum living in the beach cities of LA, we have a very high police presence at bar time to make sure that when the bars get out there are no problems and/or disruptive behavior. What would it cost the city to put this type of plan into action to ensure the safety of all between 1:30 and 3:00 a.m., including women.

this stuff happens everyday in real cities, it just only happens once a week in a town like madison.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 11:23am):
I really wish one of these headlines said, "Attempted sexual assault," and some of these cowards actually get their a**es kicked sometime. This is really sad for the city of Madison. Yet our wonderful Mayor seems to be concentrating on getting us a trolley system.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 11:32am):
I agree with 4:20am. And another thing, maybe we should continue to spend money to investigate a stupid trolly system for Madison. Then maybe these criminals can use public transportation to more easily transport and rape their victims.

Who says she accepted a ride? If she "ended up" in the van she could've just as well been grabbed and forced in. It's just as possible as accepting a ride from a stranger (not as likely, but just as possible). Give the girl who was allegedly assaulted a little credit and give the person who wrote the article a little less. It isn't very clear on explaining what happened.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 12:33pm):
I wish the Badger Herald (and the Daily Cardinal, for that matter) reporters started doing some real reporting, instead of just reading the press releases put out by the MPD
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 12:37pm):
Cops are too busy busting parties and underagers to stop crimes like sexual assault. Elementary school teachers are too busy with phonics and multiplication to remind kids not to take rides in vans with strangers.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 12:51pm):
it is true, this stuff happens in bigger cities all the time. With the growth of a city we can expect an increase in crime, what i don't understand is, why isn't the city increasing it's police force? I hardly ever see police patroling the area around bar time. There even used to be a hell of a lot more cops going into bars and waiting outside of bars 4 yrs ago than now. The city spends more money on arresting students and tear gas on halloween than actually protecting citizens from people who are far more dangerous. Where the hell is campus police when some crazy guy goes into a dorm room and assaults someone? Maybe if UW didn't spend 7.5 million dollars on a salary increase for a coach, it'd be able to afford to have more campus police patroling the area. I think both the city and the board of regents needs to attend some sort of econ 101 class and learn about managing a budget.

For those assuming she got in the van freely - There is also the "off-chance" she was forced into the van. Stop assuming things. . . we all know what happens when you assume.
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 1:57pm):
I thought the wording of this article was a little misleading about what actually happened.
Notice that that article said she "ended up" in the van. In my confusion about what this meant, I also read the Cardinal's article about this. The articles state that the woman willingly went with those men. Not accepting rides from strangers is probably the first thing women can do to prevent a sexual assault! Not saying she deserved what happened, as it was really horrible, but the city/campus is only as safe as we choose to make it.

"Yet our wonderful Mayor seems to be concentrating on getting us a trolley system"
Instead of standing in bars knocking drinks out of people's hands like he should, huh?
Anonymous (March 13, 2007 @ 3:28pm):
How did once debating a referendum on Iraq cause this sexual assault? Or are you just an obnoxious right-wing hack who would like to blame progressives for crime without any cause? Clinton funded more new cops than any other President in history through the COPS grant, which Bush has eliminated. The left is way better on solving crime than the right. Solving crime requires spending money, which is anathema to you Grover Norquist types.
And this idea that ever addressing any other issue than crime CAUSES crime is absurd, unless you think the Mayor and City Council should start a vigilante posse like those red-hatted people and walk around late at night, instead of letting the professionals do it. They just funded $100,000 for downtown safety, plus 10 new cops, etc. That's their job, not policing the streets.

How did she end up in the van? It doesn't sound like she was forced in. Maybe she was too drunk and thought she was with her friends?
While downtown could most def. use some more police surveillance, people should also use some common sense.
I NEVER leave the bars without the people I am with. A lot of these assaults stem from victims putting themselves in dangerous situations, usually while intoxicated.
Why would anyone walk home, by themselves, most likely DRUNK at 3AM, on a dark street????
Call a taxi, call a friend to come and pick you up.

"Maybe if UW didn't spend 7.5 million dollars on a salary increase for a coach,"
For one thing the UW Athletic Dept only pays a part of this amount, and for another Football supports itself and most of the rest of the inter-collegiate athletic programs. If you didn't have a Football team the UW wouldn't have one thin dime more to spend on campus police.

"Maybe if UW didn't spend 7.5 million dollars on a salary increase for a coach,"
I am embarrassed for whoever wrote this comment....
Anonymous (March 15, 2007 @ 6:48pm):
All of you people discussing how she got into the van and that she was drunk...despite all these factors, she is still a victim, and victim blaming is disgusting. sure she shouldn't have gotten into a van with strangers, but no one should EVER be afraid that they will be raped in a van, and its pathetic that you insinuate it. Also being drunk... I'm not for stronger drinking regulations on campus, and I'm betting most students aren't, and we all complain when new alcohol restrictions are proposed, so how can you then go and argue that drinking put her into that situation. Bottom line: Women should be safe whether sober or under the influence. None of these aspects matter in the big picture...she was raped. It is the sick bastard you blame, not her!
Anonymous (March 16, 2007 @ 9:09pm):
Yes people are making assumptions. Like the assumption that the incident actually occured. Or did everyone miss the word "allegedly"?
I'm not saying it didn't. It's just every time I read one of these, I think of Audrey Seiler.
