Council applauds publication team

University of Wisconsin-Platteville was honored earlier this month with three regional awards in recognition of their publication efforts.

Teresa Exline, chair of the board of directors for District V of the National Council for Advancement of Support and Education, said UW-Platteville was deserving of the Pride of CASE V awards.

The Pride of CASE V awards have been distributed for the last three years to those demonstrating excellence in their fields. In order to be considered for an award, an institution must submit its work for consideration in one of many categories — including brochures, view-books, events, fundraising, photography, videos and newsletters.

"We are consistently looking for the best practices in the field of advancement," Exline said. "Winners are the best in their field."

Platteville is one of 49 educational institutions in the Great Lakes Region to be honored with these awards. In addition to Wisconsin, the region includes Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

UW-Platteville Special Assistant to the Chancellor Barb Daus credited the university's outstanding staff with the awards. "We have a lot going on and a lot to be proud of," Daus said. "Our people are very invested, capable, creative and dedicated."

To be eligible for an award, judges determine if an applicant is worthy and then grant it either an honorable mention or a medal in one of 43 categories. UW-Platteville Coordinator for Alumni Services Kim Schmelz accepted a bronze award for Most Improved Alumni/Institution Magazine. "I am the editor of the magazine, but it takes many people to put it together," Schmelz said. Amy Kruel, UW-Platteville assistant director of publications, also won a gold award for Best Illustration/Graphic. Her work appeared on the cover of the spring 2006 UWP Alumni Today magazine.

The board of directors also recognized Photographer Andy McNeilwas with a bronze award for his series "Homecoming 2005 in Best Photo Series: Candid." "UW-Platteville continues to look toward the future on what we can improve on campus while still holding the traditional values that our alums know," Schmelz said. "We want our alumni to be proud of the university they graduated from, and one way to make them proud is by putting together a quality magazine."
