The Dane County Humane Society announced Tuesday that more than two dozen pit bulls that were seized as part of a Dane County Sheriff's Department investigation will be euthanized. Forty-seven pit bulls that were reportedly bred for fighting by their owner, Robert Lowery, have spent the last seven months at the Dane County Humane Society. The dogs were seized following a drug raid on Lowery's property last year. "That's definitely been a financial strain, and that's all money we've had to pay for out our own pocket," said Gayle Viney, public relations and membership coordinator for the DCHS. Viney said that, to date, it has cost the DCHS about $220,000 to care for the seized pitbulls. She said that, while there has been talk of Dane County paying for about half of the expenditures, nothing has been decided definitely. The sheriff's department brought criminal dog-fighting charges against Lowery and his wife, Julie Dzikowich. As part of the agreement with the Humane Society, Dane County and the Dane County District Attorney's Office, these charges will be dropped. However, Lowery recently plead guilty to federal drug trafficking and is currently at a federal prison hospital in North Carolina while he receives cancer treatment. Of the 47 seized pitbulls, nine will be returned to Dzikowich, according to a release issued by the DCHS. These nine dogs have been determined to be pets based on their friendly demeanor. But of the 38 dogs remaining at the DCHS, 25 will be euthanized due to aggressive behavior exhibited since the seizure. "They can be extremely dangerous dogs," said Andrea Farrell, president of the University of Wisconsin Student Animal Legal Defense Foundation. "As much as I love animals, I can see why they would have to be put to sleep." Farrell said that even if the DCHS did try to rehabilitate the pit bulls, it would be unlikely that new behaviors would last long. As part of the agreement with the Humane Society, officials will have the authority to check in on Dzikowich and the nine dogs she considers pets. "We can go back," Viney said. "If we see anything that is suspicious, or that they're hurting the dogs, we get to take all nine dogs back." Viney said the DCHS did not want any of the dogs to go back to Dzikowich, but they did not want to drag out the process any longer. Farrell agreed this is not an ideal situation for the dogs. "I personally don't believe that somebody who has been a known dog fighter should be able to house [dogs], especially pit bulls," Farrell said. However, she added that there is nothing that can be done to take the pit bulls away from Dzikowich, as dogs are legally considered property. The agreement with the DCHS also states that Dzikowich and Lowery are not to transfer ownership of any of the nine dogs. The dogs will also be implanted with microchips to ensure their safety, according to a DCHS release. — The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Are you insane?!
$220,000 to keep PITTBULLS alive?!! What the hell could you be thinking.
Some moron needs to be held accountable.
Kill ALL the dogs... before they kill someone. They are monsters for Gods sake.
You blundering fools can't figure that out?!!!
Anonymous (February 2, 2007 @ 3:56pm):
Do you idiots think you are going to call the "doggy psychologist" and rehabilitate these killing machines?!! Kill them before they kill someone.
$220,000!!!!
How nuts is THAT!?!
Anonymous (February 7, 2007 @ 11:05am):

I got a a pitbull and he is an awsome pet. And to yall who think that the remaining dogs can't be rehabilitated are wrong! OTHERWISE THEY WOULD BE GETTING PUT TO SLEEP MORONS!!! A pitbull is just another dog. they are like any other dog. they can be trained to kill or trained to be a nice house dog. as long as the owner is the top dog then the other dog will always look to that person as his/her pack leader. SO SCREW YOU PITBULL HATERS CUZ MY DOG PLAYS W/ LITTLE KIDS, BABYS, LITTLE DOGS, BIG DOGS, CATS, YOU NAME IT!!!!

I can't believe what some of you are saying. Those of you who think that all pit bulls are dangerous you are so ignorant. Educate yourselves. Do some research before you open your mouths. They should put the dogs through rehabilitation to test them and see if they can be adopted out or not, if not so be it at least they tried. We pay way more than 220,000 to let lazy people sit at home on welfare. To all of you who believe all American Pit Bull Terrier's are the same. killing machines that all deserve to die, you are no better than Aldolf Hitler trying to exterminate the Jews. You should be ashamed.

The solution to dangerous breeds is very simple: castrate them and pull the fangs. They still could eat dog food and gnaw on an intruder if necessary, but would not be able to easily tear out a throat, and the lack of testosterone would curb the agressive tendencies.
Jamie McCrum (April 5, 2007 @ 8:36pm):
There is no such thing as a "Dangerous Breed" a dog is a dog. Whether a pit bull or a pomeranian both will bite. A pit bull has no stonger jaw than any other breed out there. They are not born aggessive, they are putty that humans mold. Anyone could make any breed of dog vicious and mean, breed has nothing to do with it. Just because gangsters use them to make themselves feel tougher doesn't mean that everyone who owns these dogs do that. We are regular people with children who love our dogs like family members and its not right to discriminate against them just because of what they look like. That's racism.

For all of you idiots who think that Pitbulls are a mean fighting dog, you are so wrong. See I have two Pitbull mix's and they are the most gental dogs. Also I have meet purebreed Pitbull's and they are very gentle creatures. But it all depends on the owner and how they are raised. So you idiots who want to kill them for no reason what so ever you are just being cruel to another type of DOG. Plus don't always believe the storys people tell you because half the time they can be wrong. What about German Shepards? They are bread to guard and protect and can be as mean as any Pitbull. Not to mention other dogs who are raised to be mean and fight. This proves that it all depends on the owner and how they are raised from a puppy. Maybe we should consider destroying the owner vs. the animal. Now think twice about killing those loving gentle creatures we call PITBULLS!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of these comments absolutely discust me. Maybe we should pull your teeth or kill you just because of what you look like or because of what someone did to you.
If you think for one second that "pit bulls" which are not even a breed of dog are any more likely to bite than another dog you should seriously do some research before you open your mouth and say they should all be killed.
These dogs are called the NANNY DOG, why? Because they were used to take care of peoples children.
A dog is dog, a bad owner is a bad owner and a bite is a bite.
The people that use these poor dogs to do bad things are the ones that should be casterated and killed.
