The state of Wisconsin charged University of Wisconsin senior Bobby Lockhart with one felony count of substantial battery with the intent to do bodily harm Monday.
Lockhart, an All-American athlete on UW's cross country team, also faces a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. Both charges stem from a Nov. 23 incident.
In violation of UW's Student-Athlete Discipline Policy, Lockhart has been suspended from competition and practice, effective immediately.
"I don't want to comment on that at all," Lockhart said when contacted late Monday.
Police said Lockhart was arrested last month after he threw an object at a 21-year-old woman on the 10 block of Lathrop Street, causing her to get stitches, WISC-TV reported.
Lockhart's preliminary court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 4.
Recently, Lockhart was a member of the 2005 NCAA championship cross country team.
Although Lockhart was the top-scorer for Wisconsin at Great Lakes Regional Championships, he did not compete in the national championships. Lockhart ended his final Big Ten cross country championships with a 24th-place finish — last among the competing squad.
