According to a recent Badger Poll, Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold has the majority of Wisconsin voter support for his re-election efforts.
Fifty-one percent of those Wisconsin resident polled said they would like to see Feingold win re-election this fall. Twenty-nine percent hoped to see someone else win the U.S. senate seat.
Of those surveyed, 47 percent they had a favorable impression of Feingold, as opposed to only 19 percent who rated the senator unfavorably. Nearly one-third said they were too unfamiliar with Feingold to have an opinion.
Currently, Feingold is being opposed by three Republican challengers, state Sen. Bob Welch , R-Redgranite, Tim Michels, and Russ Darrow. All three Feingold rivals only registered with one in five voters.
The three Republicans are expected to increasingly make their presence known in the state. After the Republican primary Sept. 14, one of the three challengers will take on Feingold in a head-to-head race that many expect to be hard fought on both sides.
Feingold was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 after serving in state government for 10 years. In his 1998 re-election campaign, Feingold refused soft money contributions from the Democratic Party or any outside groups. He also kept campaign spending down to no more than $1 spent per vote.
The Badger Poll is conducted between March 23 and 31 by the University of Wisconsin Survey Center. It is co-sponsored by The Capital Times and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Five hundred Wisconsin residents were chosen at random and surveyed. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus four percent.
