The City of Madison’s alternate side parking restrictions began last Saturday and will continue until March 15, but the only area where the rules are not in effect every day is the Downtown/Isthumus Snow Emergency Zone.

Students not in the Snow Emergency Zone must park their cars on the odd house numbered side of the street between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on odd numbered days and on the even house numbered side of the street between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. on even numbered days, regardless of weather conditions.

Violators will receive a $20 ticket if they are illegally parked in the Snow Emergency Zone and $10 if they break the rules elsewhere in Madison.

The Snow Emergency Zone extends from Park and Proudfit Streets on the south and west to Thorton Avenue and the Yahara River on the north and from Lake Mendota to Lake Monona. In this area, alternate side parking rules are only in effect during a declared snow emergency.

Students can call the snow emergency hotline at 261-9111 to find out if three inches or more of snow has fallen to declare a snow emergency, or they can register to receive an e-mail when the city declares a snow emergency at http://www.ci.madison.wi.us/streets/snowemergencyemail.htm.
