Former University of Wisconsin football player Russell D. Kuhns, 23, was arrested during Halloween weekend for substantial battery and is currently in Dane County Jail awaiting formal charges.
According to City Council President Mike Verveer, Kuhns will be charged in Dane County Circuit Court Tuesday.
Kuhns, a 6-foot, 237-pound fullback, finished his football career at the Alamo Bowl in December 2002.
A Madison woman, Timikca Widener, was charged last March with allegedly stabbing Kuhns near Camp Randall, a charge that was eventually dropped last summer.
Police arrived at the 100 block of Lathrop Street after 2:30 a.m. March 14 to find Kuhns with a stab wound to his abdomen. Widener and friend Morena Taylor-Benell, 19, were arrested nearby.
According to the criminal complaint, the conflict stemmed from Kuhns’s loan of $250 from Taylor-Benell’s cousin. Taylor-Benell is Kuhns’ former girlfriend. The two women allegedly confronted Kuhns outside his home and demanded that he pay up immediately. When Kuhns said he would pay her after spring break, Taylor-Benell repeatedly hit Kuhns with her shoe and when he pushed Taylor-Benell away, Widener stabbed him in the stomach.
Kuhns was released from the UW Hospital after treatment to his abdomen and liver.
Last summer, Widener was sentenced to four years probation for recklessly endangering safety in the first degree and a judge dismissed the charge of aggravated battery with the intent to commit great bodily harm.
