The Student Services Finance Committee started its meeting with the traditional open forum, in which at least 10 audience members spoke on behalf of Asian Pacific American Council’s worth to the University of Wisconsin campus climate.
APAC later made a proposal to SSFC that asked for a substantial increase in funds, due to the desire to hire more liaisons and the necessity of a full-time summer staff to prepare for the influx of students in fall semesters.
Wunk Sheek, a group centered on UW’s Native American community, asked for an increase in funds.
Wunk Sheek plans on having large gatherings for Powwows and attracting visiting Indian artists and drummers. The student group plans to have the artists’ families stay at students’ expense, as is customary for many performers.
Wunk Sheek and APAC will have their budgets decided in Wednesday’s meeting.
The SAFE program, which offers cab rides, campus buses and SAFEwalk, will have its budget reexamined in Monday’s meeting due to a SAFE representative’s illness.
Decisions regarding funding for Greater University Tutoring Service and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Campus Center were made after this publication went to press.
