Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Ed Thompson asked for his brother’s help yesterday.

Thompson delivered a letter about legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes to his brother, former governor and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson.

In the hand-delivered letter, Ed asked Tommy for help.

“I recently joined the Coalition for Compassionate Access, which is asking the administration to allow seriously ill patients to have access to medical marijuana,” the letter read. “This is an important issue in Wisconsin. A March poll by Chamberlain Research Consultants indicates that 80.3 percent of Wisconsinites support legalizing medical marijuana when prescribed by a doctor to a seriously ill patient.”

Ed said there had been a bi-partisan bill to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes, but the bill died in an Assembly committee. The Coalition includes more than 300 state Legislators from across the country, as well as several national health organizations.

“Unfortunately, the Coalition has been unable to schedule a meeting with anyone in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,” he said in the letter to his brother. “As secretary of the department that oversees the federal government’s small medicinal marijuana program, you are the most appropriate person in the administration to address the issue. Would you be able to sit down with me and a small number of Coalition representatives to discuss the issue?”
