Madison police are still investigating a shooting early Saturday morning, which involved UW football players, outside the Towers apartment building, 502 N. Frances St.

Madison police responded to a report of gunshots fired near the Madison Inn, 601 Langdon St., at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

The incident reportedly resulted from a conflict involving possible tampering with mopeds outside the Towers apartment building. When the unknown suspects returned with at least one firearm and shots were fired near the Madison Inn, where police believe the suspects fled by car.

No vehicles were identified and no weapons were recovered from the scene. University officials would not confirm the involvement of athletes Monday. “

We are waiting for the Madison Police Department to finish their investigation and if we need to, we will get involved at that point,” said assistant athletic director for communications Steve Malchow. Interim Dean of Students Roger Howard was also unaware of the particulars of the incident because it did not occur on campus. The Towers is two blocks from Library Mall. “

If something happens on campus, we are typically made aware of the situation,” Howard said. “However, when an incident occurs off campus, we have to wait like everyone else.”

The Madison Police Department has not released any more information since the morning of the incident.
