Red Cross accepting donations for holiday care packages

The Red Cross is conducting their annual holiday care package program for U.S. troops overseas, but this year some major changes have taken place in reaction to recent security issues.

Care packages have been sent to U.S. troops overseas for many years to provide them with some holiday cheer and comfort from home. This year, packages will be sent to troops in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bosnia, and Kosovo. The American Red Cross helps troops and their families not only during the winter holidays, but year-round with emergency communication and support.

Pam Moen of the Badger Chapter of the American Red Cross said sending the packages overseas this year was “especially important due to the events that are going on worldwide.”

This year, the Red Cross is accepting items at their offices that have normally been sent directly overseas by citizens. Due to security risks, the Red Cross needs to inspect the packages first and repackage them prior to sending them to troops, a measure taken to protect the troops and other American citizens.

People should drop off packages that are no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches. Moen suggested some items that could be included in these packages: candy, card games, toiletries, drink mixes, hot chocolate, stationary, Christmas stockings and other holiday items.

For those unable to donate these items, or who wish to make a financial contribution, monetary donations are also accepted. Because the Red Cross did not budget for the extra postal cost this year, donations are needed to cover shipping, Moen said.

The Red Cross is accepting donations at their location on 4860 Sheboygan Avenue in Madison on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
