In an Associated Students of Madison election boasting an 89 percent turnout increase from last semester, UW-Madison freshmen elected Adam Walsh and Nicole Marklein to represent their class.

Walsh received 275 of the 766 freshman votes cast, and Marklein received 207.

ASM Student Election Commissioner Nick Kanter said the turn-out statistics illustrated “an exciting trend.”

“I am very happy with the turn out,” he said. “This is a huge increase from last semester and last year.”

Kanter attributed the increase to intense candidate campaigning and ASM election publicity including e-mails and pamphlets.

In other ASM elections, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences winning candidate Bethany Gries pulled in 165 votes and professional students candidate Angela Frozena won with 54 votes. Within the letters and science program, the graduate seat went to Tom Clark with eight votes and the non-graduate seat went to John Moscariello with 15 votes.
