Archuleta has ho-ho-horrible 2nd album, new single

Blow out your pumpkin patch-scented candle, destroy your slutty schoolgirl Halloween costume and spit out your apple cider, because fall is over for all you loyal David Archuleta fans. For everyone else, don’t destroy a thing, except maybe his newest bargain bin-worthy album, Christmas from the Heart.

Archuleta, season seven “American Idol” runner-up, attempts to fulfill his duty as holiday cheer rouser on his first Christmas album released Tuesday.

Ignoring the obvious mock-worthy, uninspired title, this album utterly fails to accomplish what holiday music lovers yearn, or at least hope for when seeing the sale of yet another Christmas album — that is, an attempt at even a degree of melodic originality on modern renditions of favored classics.

First of all, why is Archuleta already surrendering to the predicted pop-inspired holiday CD so soon after his successful self-titled debut album? Shouldn’t this cop-out be reserved for when he’s too lazy and uninventive to write or perform any new songs? Or when he’s fallen off our collective radar after the next inevitable “Idol” sensation?

Somewhat ambitiously, Archuleta sings three songs in Spanish, Latin and French. Although his Spanish “Ave Maria” and Latin “Riu Riu Chiu” are well suited to his Latin heritage, his French “Pat-A-Pan” only serves to highlight his poor French accent, resulting in a somewhat comical, up-tempo mistake.

But, perhaps the biggest hiccup on the album is the background instrumentals. They detract from Archuleta’s voice and sound more like the elementary beats you’d tap out on your beginners’ Yamaha piano keyboard.

Nonetheless, Archuleta admirers who treasure his established baby-face innocence and pious image will savor this album, as every ballad is carried by his clear, powerful and even sometimes over-performed voice that many of the devoted “Archie” fans have ceaselessly worshipped since his beginnings on “Idol.”

Particularly arresting are “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Silent Night,” which delicately showcase his vast vocal range and soothing tone while also managing to stay true to the traditional essence of these songs.

A compelling yet completely unnecessary duet with Charice Pempengco, the Filipina singer who gained fame after receiving 13 million hits on YouTube, adds an interesting element of collaboration to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Although the sound on this track is, thankfully, more believable and not quite as desperate, it fails to measure against other timeless Christmas duets and would have been better left untouched.

Brace yourselves, though, because the final track, “Melodies of Christmas,” a new tune for the holiday season, proves the enduring truth that writing new Christmas songs is a task that many should never attempt in the music sphere.

The song, co-written by Archuleta, is regrettably drenched in the cheese factor of contemporary holiday tunes and has Archuleta ironically pointing out lyrically that this melody he’s crooning will never triumph like his predecessors: “There’s something about the melodies/ Of Santa Claus and Christmas trees/ Favorite songs of Nat and Bing/ Elvis, Josh, and Celine.”

Yes, there is something about these cherished “melodies,” something Nat and Bing got right the first time.

“Archies” can joyously begin sipping on eggnog, rocking around the Christmas tree and waiting for rosy-faced Saint Nick to sail through the starry night sky, while the rest of us can contently continue to plot our kick-ass costumes while munching on caramel apples.

2 stars out of 5.

Your review is so bad and made me mad. You maybe the Archie hater, but be a little more respectful. Go home and wash you mouth and clean your thoughts. David A sings very well no matter what you say. I am buying his CD. I heard it through AOL and ordered it already. May you do the same.

You may need to hear some good music like Archuleta’s.

Peace

user-pic

Ave Maria is in Latin, Riu Riu Chiu is in Spanish.

I find it quite funny that people react so venomously to Archie singing harmless little Christmas songs. The album is meant as a thank you gift to his fans on the side as they wait for the next pop album, which he’s already writing and recording for, by the way. The truth is this Christmas album is gorgeous and Archie could just give Christmas concerts for the rest of his life and have a very successful and lucrative career.

Let’s be honest here. This review is meaningless. Why did you bother?

user-pic

I don’t remember having to pay for a thank you gift.

user-pic

I find it quite funny that people react so venomously to The Badger writing harmless little music reviews. Do you belittle/correct trivial details made by everyone who has a different opinion than you?

Your review is pointless. Why do you bother?

user-pic

Get a life hater. Pinche culo. Archie is amazing.

user-pic

wow…u really hate him dont u?… this review is far from objective.. go find another job

user-pic

It’s a review, you idiot, it’s not supposed to be objective. A review is nothing but a writer’s opinion.

You guys should leave this poor woman alone. This is nothing but her opinion - you’d be outraged if someone had a go at you for voicing your opinion. Just because her opinion contradicts yours, that doesn’t mean you need to attack her for it. You all claim she’s being disrespectful, mean and venomous but you’re all acting that way yourselves. Grow up, get a life and move on for chrissakes. It’s only a review, not the end of the world.

user-pic

but it kind of sounded like the author of this review is encouraging everyone to hate it.

user-pic

Really.

It’s a review you half wit. It is not supposed to be objective.

user-pic

Huh? are you sure you listened to the album? What Child Is This is the most stunning thing I have ever heard with the soaring arrangement and otchastra really complimenting david’s amazing voice. David has international fans who will appreciate Spanish and French, but Pat a Pan is catchy, fun and an under appreciated Christmas song. The duet with Charise is smooth as butter so I am wondering if you had an ear infection if you did not enjoy that.

Well everyone entitled to their opinion,,,,,but readers give a listen yourself. From where I sit, this album will make a special time of year even more magical.

user-pic

Well, it’s no wonder the name of this site is called “thebadgehearld” You have definitely lived up to the badgering part. David Archuleta does not deserve this very negative review. This album was made by him as a gift to his fans. It is beautiful beyond words. David is a very hard working 18 year old with an enormous talent. I grateful for all he does for his fans. I feel bad for you that you cannot appreciate the beauty in this album.

user-pic

Or maybe it’s called badgerherald.com because of the University of Wisconsin Badgers? Just a thought…

user-pic

You are truly an idiot! First of all, David made this Christmas album because so many fans were requesting that he do so. This album is a beautiful tribute to his deep feeling for Christmas and the holiday season. I won’t even begin to talk about his voice because it is flawless. I have never heard him hit a sour note. Obviously not too many people feel this way because David has sold out every concert he has performed and his pre-order sales of this album are nearing platinum. David is not only loved in the U.S. but all around the world. He will be singing and delighting us with his voice years after most artists have been forgotten. I feel sorry for you that you are so bitter to this wonderful young man. I had the chance to meet him and believe me, YOU DON”T GET IT!!!!

Paula Kennedy

user-pic

Maybe you wrote this mean, not to mention laughable review about David Archuleta because YOU are too lazy and uninventive to write about anything new!

There may be people who are not fans of David, but there is no denying that this album is breathtakingly beautiful!

user-pic

back off! just because you have no life doesn’t make it ok for you to be downright rude to David A. If actually knew what good music sounds like, then maybe you would be able to appreciate his vocals. I feel sorry for you, because you cannot see the pure genius behind his music.

user-pic

What a lemming-like review. You are of the school of thought that one is supposed to hate an innocent youth with a unarguably stellar voice. He can sing anything. Why do you make up rules about what he can and can’t release? Remember Elvis? He sang whatever he wanted and it worked. Get over it.

user-pic

It is obvious that you didn’t listen to his album you didn’t know which language he sung in his songs. Your article was not done objectively at all, he did this album for his fans, this was not a cop out. He is very religious and his fans asked him to do a Christmas Album, so he accommodated. This is a very moving album, he sang it from the heart hence the title of the album. His voice is very moving and soulful. It has a mix of genres for everyone, including R & B and soul. If you would like to hear it you can hear snippets of it on youtube itunes or amazon. Aol is streaming it live on their radio station all this week. His album has been in the top 10 on itunes and amazon since it was released. So hear it for yourself, because it is obvious that Ann is biased. I see why this site is called badger-because you badged the *^&%$$ out of this album and David.

user-pic

this is rubbish. :) what a pointless & immature ‘review’ you have. whatever hater. and please, try to get your informations right. you suck dude, big time!

user-pic

you sure you listened to the album? because your comments are not accurate to the real performance that David made.. you’re maybe a hater or a critic.. oh well.. you cant change how we adore and appreciate David’s music.. sorry but your destructive criticisms wont affect our love for him.. :)

“what people yearn for in Holiday Music” and David delivered..stay writing for the school newspaper…you’ll never move up to the big time…

You know what? I HATE YOU! EVERYONE HATES YOU! Did you have an open brain surgery? looks like it. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO SAY THOSE WORDS BECAUSE YOU DON’T CONTAIN ANY OF THOSE1 WHY WON’T YOU LOOK AT YOURSELF FIRST BEFORE TALKING NONESENSE YOU STUPID BRAT! WHY WON’T YOU JUST SHUT UP YOU STUPID RAT! ONLY A STUPID SPOILED PICKLED LOKO WOULD SAY THOSE! I MEAN THAT WAS REALLY HHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFUUUUUUULLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!! many got hurt after what you said!those words were really HURTFUL! THOSE WERE MEANS WORDS! ALL STUPID DUMB WORDS! YOU DON’T DESERVE TO EVEN MENTION DAVID ARCHULETA’S NAME! YOU ARE skunk! A WORTHLESS PIECE OF FILTH! A WORTHLESS SATAN-FOLLOWER! if you have nothing good to say, why did you make a topic ABOUT DAVID?! YOUR NAME IOS RUINED AND I’LL CONTINUE TO RUIN IT! PUTA KA!

user-pic

jawa kaw…hahaha

user-pic

david archuleta is simply the best. i listened to ave maria and all i can say is bravo david, bravo.

I think you should listen to the whole album, especially the song What Child Is This. Then you can write a new review of Christmas From The Heart. Huong, from Vietnam

user-pic

What did you do when you were 18 years old? I bet NOTHING!

Why the harsh criticism of David? Did he do anything to hurt you or others? You might not like what he is singing but do not write hatefully - that is what you are doing! The more people criticize him, the more we love him - David is one person in the whole world who is just trying to please his fans. We all wanted him to make a christmas cd - and well, he did! And we all love it! Get a life Ann Rivall! If I were you, read the Bible and learn how to be a good person!!

user-pic

Wow, bitter much? Who spit in your coffee this morning? I think you have to HAVE a heart to enjoy “Christmas from the Heart”. Guess somebody didn’t tell you bout that little pre-requisite thing. I feel kinda sad for you that you live in a bitter, heartless and love-free world. Maybe your Mama didn’t hug you enough? The other 99.9% of the world is madly and deeply in love with this Christmas album. I guess the numbers do and will speak for themselves. Come on over here and let me give you a hug….I really think you need it…

user-pic

Congrats on all the comments!

user-pic

Gosh the person who wrote this review is sooo retarded!!! CFTH is one of the Christmas albums ever!! and just so you know David is an amazing singer!!!

user-pic

Ho ho ho - did you get enough hits from the Archie fans to raise your ratings? That’s what these mean-spirited reviews and comments about David are usually intended to do. Everyone knows this kid has a following of devoted fans that will spike up the hits on any website that mentions his name - and more so when a crappy review or insulting post is provided. If you want to review an album, review it, but don’t use David’s fame to bolster your own.

user-pic

HAAH, I was going to leave a comment, but it seems as if my work was done for me. But in all honesty, what in the world were you thinking when you published this review. I mean, maybe some criticism here & there wouldn’t be too bad, I mean no artist ever comes out with a flawless album. But just to trash the whole entire thing like that, you really have no class- to say the least.

user-pic

This review is just so off base, it’s pathetic. It’s obvious that you just don’t like David. Anyone who bought this CD would absolutely love it. Why don’t you talk to Perez Hilton, Jordan Sparks and many others. I’m sorry I usually don’t call people names, but you are an idiot. Check out some of the other reviews. One review called his Ave Maria an epiphany of joy. Another one described it as eclectic and soulful, in other words they loved it!!!!!!!! You just don’t know what you are talking about.

user-pic

The one thing I gathered from this article is Ann Rivall hates music. I feel sorry for her. She is a very negative person who probably doesn’t like anything but to run her mouth against anyone and anything through pen. She has balls too. To make a statement that she knows what music lovers want. I am a music lover and she doesn’t know at what I like or love. If she did, the reveiw would have been a lot different. My suggest to The Badger Herald is to fire this person and get someone who isn’t so hateful and negative.

user-pic

Such a horrible comment. How could you say that? Just because you don’t like David you shouldn’t blast him with this cruel comment of yours. Hello, respect him please. He’s an awesome singer with one of the most soulful voice I’ve ever heard. You just don’t know how to appreciate music. Would you like it if you took so much time in the world to come up with an album and someone comment so horribly on it? Please THINK before you comment. Thank you very much.

user-pic

I agree with the ther Archies. David Archuleta is very talented. He is also very polite. To name call him goes against what he stands for Can we just show respect and appreciate his music? That is all he and his fans want.

user-pic

Nonsense! It is beautiful and it is great knowing that somebody who believes in Christ, actually sings them. When I read this article, it in-furiated me! Why don’t you talk about the positive instead of the negative. You are just cold-hearted to David, who is a fabulous person, with good intesions. And on the other hand, you DO NOT have good intensions towards others. I don’t know why you would focus on the negative!!!

David is:

Fabulous, beautiful, holy, laughter, jolly, good, positive, wonderful, magnifisent, a terrific singer, kind to others, forgiving (and he may not forgive you, he will probably just ignore you), cute, willing, passionate, loving, peaceful, calm, excited, going on the straight path, he makes good choices, clean, Hispanic, totally perfect on his pitch, has the perfect vibrato, is connected to each and every song that he sings, and is a regular LDS (yay!) church goer, he gets straight A’s in school, which he also participates in, he dresses modestly in his clothing, charitable, comforting, a smiley face, helpful, is devoted to his family, he nourishes people, is kind, devoted to his fans, (that is why he created this CD!) and so many other things!

And what was your purpose of posting this Ho-ho-horrible post?

user-pic

Wow, all I have to say is that this review is stinking. Yes, STINKING REVIEW! I’m proud to say that. So what if David made a Christmas album when its not the holidays yet? IS THAT A CRIME TO DO SO? Everyone knows that whoever hates David or his music is either retarded, idiotic or just plain mentally disordered. You just got haters, not supporters. I’m not saying you WANT supporters or anything, its just that no one agrees with your stupid review yet. Even so, it’ll be a few people, and yes. ALL MENTALLY DISORDERED. I guess you don’t even know what music is at all. You just got a lot more people to get Christmas From The Heart. How nice of you. David is an amazing singer and I mean like, he might be like baby-faced or whatever you lame people call him, but hey, he’s a good looking guy and an amazing singer. So now, go get some REAL music, and stop hating on David. If you still don’t understand a word I’m saying, you just passed the 100% Complete Retard test.

The background instrumentals “that sound more like the elementary beats you’d tap out on your beginners’ Yamaha piano keyboard” were played by the famous City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. I dare you to tell it to their face.

I LOVE YOOOU DAVID ♥ HE IS THE BEST SINGER ♥

O very witty. But I can see that despite all of the trashing you did, you started to like it! Give it another listen. It may mellow you out. David’s voice is both uplifting and incredibly soothing. And I love the beautifully clear sound of the album.

ARE YOU HEARING IMPAIRED??????????

user-pic

To everyone who has written a review under me:

Clearly, you have strong opinions regarding David’s musical abilities… That’s fine. However, respect the fact that Ann Rivall ALSO has an opinion that just so happens to differ from your own. It’s fine to express your disagreement with her review, but I believe that many of you have simply gone too far. FINE, you don’t share her opinion, but this Christmas CD is not the most controversial issue in today’s world - there is absolutely no need to become so hateful and rude in your attacks. I’m proud of this writer for having the courage to share her view even though she knew not many would be an agreement - THAT is part of what creates a great journalist. Regardless of how you feel, respect that this writer is a PERSON with FEELINGS… there is no need for immature name-calling and personal attacks. Go find something else to do with your day and people you actually know to say such hateful things about.

Wow, everyone needs to calm the fuck down! It’s her right to ate the CD if she really didn’t like it. And if the CD doesn’t appeal to “Archie” fans, then who the fuck cares!

user-pic

So sorry you’re unable to appreciate heartfelt music.Perhaps holidays such as Halloween really are your thing.

user-pic

This writer is entitled to her opinion but so are we. David’s album is fantastic and to describe it at “bargin-bin worthy” is a cheap shot. I don’t understand how it could be described as “bargin-bin worthy” when his sales are excellent on both Itunes and Amazon. The sales (and fan comments) for this album proves that he is still is a popular as ever. The reason he is releasing a Christmas album is because he SO popular right now and fans are willing to purchase his album. Why wait until “he’s fallen off our collective radar after the next inevitable “Idol” sensation”? Who would want to produce or buy a holiday album then? But no worries, I doubt David will be “falling off the radar” anytime soon. Go ahead and enjoy Halloween, I choose to enjoy Christmas with David in October, Novemeber, December, and all year long. :)

OH Ann, why sound so HO HO horrible on the festive reason for Christmas? What is Christmas without eggnog, rocking around the Christmas tree, and tales of St.Nick? Your critique sounds like a college essay assignment where you HAVE to negatively critique some popular music album and this just happened to be the ONE chosen. And what makes a great journalist JessaCarey IS researching the facts. One lesson Ann can learn here is that she DID not research some facts before she critiqued. Too many journalists today are VERY BAD because of the same reason Ann is being slammed here. One of the main reasons most tv and newspaper companies are going out of business and are loathed in America is because of journalistic reviews are so many times one sided and lack any sense of thorough research or fact finding. So, I would suggest Ann learn something from this and just add a little respect and more facts in regards to the making of the album. She is not being attacked for her opinion, but her content and lack of knowledge of any of it’s making. THIS IS NOT WHAT MAKES A GOOD JOURNALIST, it’s what will ruin a journalists reputation!!

For example, the background music that sounds to you like beginners Yamaha plunks is none other than the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra! Uh, maybe you need a lesson or two on WHAT is masterful orchestration. And another large part of the instrumentation comes from well known producer Emanuel Kiriakou.

Many reviews of the language of french, spanish in this album have been very high marks, by the way. So, it makes me question your french review.

This album is getting good reviews!

But on another not, I bet if you give Melodies of Christmas a few more listens , you ‘ll be singing it in the back of your head. Hee hee! Lighten up a bit and sip some eggnog, and then retake your listen to “Christmas From the Heart”. There is a deeper, more spiritual, more exquisite, feeling that comes from listening to David’s album which I feel inclined to say that you are missing…the Spirit of Christmas lingers throughout this album. It’s there for the listener to draw from their own spirit to truly feel and appreciate. No college course or college degree can defy that! Give it another try with that in mind, and you will be in for a delightful surprise!!!

user-pic

Well i guess you don’t gonna buy the album, i’m right? ha, ha, ha, The only comment i can make in this seudo-review is POOR University of Wisconsin, if this is the kind of journalist the send out in the market, too much TMZ style(bad, bad, bad). Very sorry for Madison’s premier independent student newspaper, they need some vision to find persons a little more objectives ,the problem is not you don’t like the album, but the fact you hate the person, and you can’t hide that fact, then your credibility to do a review is gonne. You just break a rule in the professional journalism…Objectivity. So i hope you just start your career and the ethic work, is not finish yet, because clearly you need a little more, well you always can find a work in TMZ. Anyway , i’m glad i read you seudo/review, this institution need serious recomendations about their ethics works with some students. Love..bye! :)

@JessaCarey: Are you kidding me? “Regardless of how you feel, respect that this writer is a PERSON with FEELINGS…”

Did Ann respect David or his music in that trashing she put out? Does she respect that David Archuleta is an 18 yr old young man? Does she realize how damaging her vitriolic and thoughtless words could cause anyone not just David? WOuld you like to know what David’s rival/ peers think of his album. Click the link.

Ann, I’m sure you’re so accustomed to hearing the same old Holiday msuic sung the same old way that David’s voice and talent is way out of your comprehension. That’s ok, David wows even the experts.

user-pic

I’m sorry you feel that way.

user-pic

Oh, do you love the attention we’re giving you, Miss Ann? haha

user-pic

I respect your opinion. But this blog came across more of an attack then a review. He worked on this album while touring… and i think its showcases his vocals beautifully. He’s not competing with the greats…just giving fans and family some holiday music.Traditional Christmas music is not everyone’s thing….but bargain bin???? OUCH!

user-pic

God Bless you Ann. One day I hope you will open your heart and be able to hear what we hear when listening to David Archuleta. It is such a joy feeling what we feel when he sings to us and it is so very sad that you are missing out. Hope you will join us one day!!

everyone needs to law the fuck off. you’re all so offended about all the “hateful, heartless” things the writer wrote about David’s music.. well, how do you think she feels being called a retard who should not only be fired, but who has no life and who we should all feel sorry for? if you are going to disagree with her, fine. but use an actual argument to back up your views. calling the writer mentally disordered who wasn’t hugged enough as a child does nothing to support David Archuleta. music reaches everyone’s ears in a different way - it is a subjective experience, which was why this writer was assigned to write a CRITIQUE.. an OPINION, not an OBJECTIVE piece to “write about the general opinion of David’s Christmas CD”. seriously. show some fucking respect.

“it is a subjective experience, which was why this writer was assigned to write a CRITIQUE.. an OPINION, not an OBJECTIVE piece to “write about the general opinion of David’s Christmas CD”. seriously. show some fucking respect.”

Why on earth should we respect someone who obviously has no respect for David James Archuleta? Have you read that thing yourself?

Would you give us the qualifications of Ann that made you want “HER” to write this piece? And tell me Ann, if Lord Andrew Lloyd Weber were to disagree with you, would you still hold to your review?

I hope after all these comments, the Badger Herald realizes they’ve hired a person who doesn’t have a clue about what people like. Please find a person who can listen to music and give an honest review that people can agree with. For all those people who read this and decide not buy David Archuta’s Chrtistmas album, please heed the comments here and go out and buy the cd. You will never regret it. Please Badger Herald, get a new reviewer.

user-pic

Ann Rivall you poor pathetic thing. Either you are suffering PMS, hate Christmas music, seek attention, hate David Archuleta, suffer from poor self esteem/body image, or all of the above. You can sharpen your poison pen at this third rate hack of a college “newspaper”, publish your baseless negativity, but people like you will never be able to suppress positive, heartwarming, life affirming people like David Archuleta.

user-pic

Ann Rival, you need to chill out and get a boyfriend for this Holiday and get a good THERAPY. Call David Cook for a help.

user-pic

Wow. This review is great solely for the fact that it brought some complete idiots out of hiding and onto the comment boards. Ann does not deserve the personal attacks she is receiving, but holy hell are they funny…some people are mind-boggingly stupid. At least Ann can form a coherent sentence.

user-pic

I personally LOVED it. David Archuletta is a joke. Those who listen to him need to get some musical taste.

user-pic

Palm to Heart

I’m afraid the joke’s on you friend. However, be kind and expalin to all of us fans of DJA just what makes him a joke. Don’t be shy. And do it coherently.

Angels, I think we should really thank Ann. Surely her vitriolic review will send people running to the store to purchase CFTH just to see if she is right. Whne they see she has given a totally biased review, probably because she is a fan of a college tourer, they will not read her again. Btw Ann, if you decide to pan someone with as many fans as DJA, you should be willing to take the heat from his supporters. Today of all days is the worst time for you to try and hurt this young man.

It’s unfortunate that the above remarks towards the “critic” are hateful in themselves. What is clear is that the critic did not listen to the entire cd (or entire songs) based upon misinformation in the review and has chosen to use inappropriately hateful comments in her so-called evaluation of the cd. A real critic listens to something objectively and then objectively and professionally writes their review. Ann Rivall(?) comes off sounding like an immature, ignorant biased reviewer and that is what has upset those who enjoy and love this cd. There have been other less than favorable reviews (along with the majority of positive ones)and they did not elicit this response. That’s because we respect other’s opinions when they are real and not hateful.

Clearly Ann has exposed her lack of professionalism here and only acts to validate that journalism has reached an all time low.
If this is the level of student performance that is graduating from the University of Wisconsin I would clearly stay away from this school.

user-pic

As a UW graduate with a daughter currently attending, I got very excited to see one of the great student newspapers, that I used to read when I was a student, reviewing David Archuleta’s new Christmas album.

Now I know that it is very hard to even think about Christmas when the excitement of Halloween in Madison is still looming, but, come on Ann, did you really listen to this CD with an objective and critical ear?

I am not Christian and therefore do not celebrate Christmas, but as a lover of music, I am very familiar with all Christmas songs, both religious and secular. I find David’s album incredibly sung and wonderfully moving, and while he is only 18, his rendition of these old traditional songs, certainly can hold their own amongst the best of the past.

I think the reason David recorded this type of album, instead of something new, is not because he is lazy or inspired, in fact his work ethic is quite the contrary. He has a reputation of being the hardest working 18 year old out there. This album was a labor of love to his fans who pined for this since last December, when he sang Christmas songs at all the Jingle concerts he performed in.

So Ann, do yourself a favor, after you finish donning your Halloween costume and parading down State Street, go home, put up some hot chocolate and relax with another listen to “Christmas From The Heart,” you might just change your mind!

Ann sorry so many Archies said mean things to you. I do believe that you were a little harsh in your review. But you do have a right to your opinion. I for one LOVED the CD it brings peace to my soul. I had a friend once ask me and one of my Archie friends what was so special about David. And my friend told her that it was hard to say in words because with David you had to open your heart and feel him. Well when I listen to David I feel his spirit and the love he has for life, God, family, friends and fans. I hope someday that someone will touch your heart the way David has mine and many other.

If Ann Rivall is willing to dish it out, she better be prepared to take what is going to come her way. She has every right to express her opinion, even under the guise of being a “music critic”, and all those who post here have every right to express their opinion too. David Archuleta will always be an easy target for those who want to take cheap shots at him. He may not be, and he may never be, “cool” enough for the likes of Ann or her supporters, but that’s okay, there are plenty of those who understand and enjoy David Archuleta just the way he is.

Ann, by now you are probably sorry you wrote this review in this way. You should never have used the phrase “Ho Ho Horrible” because it does not reflect what you have written in the body of your review. You actually said some positive things: “every ballad is carried by his clear, powerful…voice”, “particularly arresting are “Angels We Have Heard On High” and “Silent Night” which delicately showcase his vast vocal range and soothing tone, while also managing to stay true to the traditional essence of these songs”. And as far as calling “Melodies of Christmas” cheesy. Let’s face it many popular Christmas songs have the “cheese” factor. It’s almost unavoidable. And this song, is very catchy. I predict that it will be played every Christmas for many years to come. You are entitled to your opinion, I respect that, but I think you should have changed the title to fit the rest of your review.
The title alone was enough to anger David’s fans, as it is certainly not horrible at all. It is beautiful!

user-pic

Ann, Your review/critique of young David’s Christmas CD was misleading. The title was meant to grab attention and I found it hurtful. You then describe David’s VOICE as “clear and powerful”. With a “vast vocal range and soothing tone”. Following the colleges basic English criteria on reviews, yours lacked clarity, the tone was all-over-the-place and information was skewed. Your opinion is yours…just hard to figure out what it really is through this review.

user-pic

I am a grandma…62 years old. I dare say that I have been around longer than Ann, and probably everyone posting here. I have never..in all of my years of listening to Christmas music…ever heard a singer that has moved me so emotionally with the purity of his voice and heart!! David is in a class of his own. He is a Masterclass performer and person. Have people become so desensitized to what beautiful music really is! Is this what listening to the radio has done for us??? David’s “Christmas from the Heart” is both stunning and stirring!!! He has been able to reach down deep within his heart, and make us all feel the true meaning of each and every song. I have never done that before in any Christmas music that I have listened to…by any artist!! He not only sings to us…he tells us a story that makes us feel like we are hearing it for the first time!!! He is a musical genius…nothing less. David is only filled with goodness and kindness toward others. He may be hurt by what you have said about him Ann. He truly cares about pleasing others and always giving them his best effort. He works tirelessly on his craft, and is always trying to be better. He would say about your comments: “Well, thats too bad!” People who truly know and understand David…love how he makes others feel. They love the fact that he is always trying to find the positive in any situation. He truly makes others want to be better themselves…in how they speak, and in how they act. He has done that for me, and I am 62. My hope is that someday you can really get to know David…the artistic musician, and angelic person. He will help you release some of the negativity that you appear to have. DAVID IS A GIFT TO EVERYONE WILLING TO EMBRACE HIS BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND ANGELIC HEART! Now, I would suggest you go listen to “O Holy Night”! There is a very clear message in that song that you may need to hear. Peace!

I love angry tards losing their shit over something so petty.

Ann, welcome to tard hell. They will call for your sacking and imprisonment. How dare you have an opinion that doesn’t agree with theirs! :)

user-pic

I am sorry but your review falls flat on its face and literally trips over itself with contradictions. Along with all the different ways you found to deprecate David’s “Christmas from the Heart”, you also used terms like clear, powerful, arresting, vast vocal range and soothing tone, compelling. So which is it? I am confused. Also you said the duet with Charise Pempengco was completely unnecessary but do not go on to explain why. Then in the same sentence you do a one-eighty and state, “adds an interesting element of collaboration”. Huh?

user-pic

Giggles along with Idletard at the tard comments.

Ann, just so you know, all the tard comments follow the same format. You’re mean, you’re evil, you’re a joke, you’re a HATR, etc. etc. Doesn’t matter what Idol you critique, it’s the same (unless you dare to say something about Adam Lambert, than even if you’re a writer for the Advocate or a blogger on a GLBT site, you can still be called out as a homophobe.)

Oh, and for Grandma? Are you kidding me? You’re 62, and no other singer covering Christmas songs “has moved you emotionally” with their voice?

Let’s see…I take it all of your 62 years you’ve never heard Christmas music recorded by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Judy Garland or Barbra Streisand.

Seriously, you want to hear “pure voice?” Go give a listen to Placido Domingo’s Sacred Songs…which, BTW, include versions of the Ave Maria in Italian, Spanish AND Latin.

user-pic

YOU CAN TELL RIGHTAWAY WHEN A MUSIC JOURNO IS FAKE AND HAS NO BACKGROUND IN MUSIC - ANN RIVALL IS ONE GOOD EXAMPLE. BY THE TITLE OF HER ARTICLE ALONE YOU COULD TELL IT. FANS OF DAVID ARCHULETA JUST LAUGH OUT LOUD DON’T GET CARRIED AWAY AND TAKE THE BAIT.

ANN RIVALL, JUST NEED COTTON BUDS TO CLEAN HER EARS AND GET A MUSIC LESSON FROM BOB DYLAN FOR A START.

user-pic

Can we skip the part where you attack David and his music and his fans and get to where you go straight to hell?!

Thank you for this:

“Particularly arresting are “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Silent Night,” which delicately showcase his vast vocal range and soothing tone while also managing to stay true to the traditional essence of these songs.”

But for the rest of your “review” I strongly suggest research my dear.

user-pic

Ooooh, I can’t wait to hear your review of Madame Lamebert’s album. I hope it sucks donkey balls and you are woman enough to say so. Those tards are THE most obnoxious group you’ll ever come across. They’ll waddle their fat asses right over here and give you hell for daring not to like THE GREATEST SINGER IN THE HISTORY OF EVERYTHING. David Archuletta is fine, if YOU’RE A 12 YEAR OLD FREAKING GIRL, but most of his fans are 55 or over, just like the rest of the AI contestant tards. The pathetic, overweight lonely losers who obsess over kids on a two-bit American karaoke contest.

user-pic

how can you say that . David is amazing and extremly talented HIS ALBUM IS AWSOME >> So stop hating!!!!!!!!

(David your album is amazing dont let anyone tell you its not)

user-pic

Yes..Anonymous…I have heard all those great singers that you just listed. I love music, and have loved their vocals too!! However, I did say that I have NEVER been moved by any singer emotionally like I have with David Archuleta. You see, you can be a great singer…given the examples that you have given above. I agree all of those singers are great!! None of those singers have moved me emotionally. I have not connected with their hearts!!! You can be a great singer without connecting emotionally with your audience. Josh Groban is another great singer. I have never connected with Josh either. David Archuleta does not only have a magnificent voice, but he puts his beautiful heart into each and every song which allows the viewers to make an emotional connection. There is a difference. David has a purity of voice AND heart that I have not connected with in any other performer. I am not disputing that there are not other great singers in my time. For me personally, they have only been that…just a great singer. David has more. He, himself, is able to make an emotional connection with his songs and make his audience feel what he is feeling. He is in a class all his own. I hope that I have cleared up for you what I am trying to express. David is not just a voice, he is the heart behind the voice! Thanks for listening. Gmax4

Ann- I’m not sure what album you listened to, but it sure wasn’t David’s. This is one of the best Christmas albums I have ever heard, and I’m not that young. Or old. The way he pours himself and his emotions into every word— it takes my breath away. If you can walk away and feel nothing, then the problem doesn’t lay with David.

While I truly admire and care about David, I don’t let how I feel about him interfere with my thoughts about his music. And neither should you.

user-pic

Ann is receiving exactly what she asked for. This is the most unprofessional and biased review I have ever read. When a review purposely goes out of its way to belittle both the Artist and their entire fan-base this is the kind of response you can expect. I will agree that some of the comments have been just as immature as the review itself but it was self-inflicted. Perhaps numbers were all that Ann was looking for, if so she certainly succeeded, but the review itself = complete fail!

Anonomously…I happen to agree that there have been many great singers in my time. However, NONE of these great singers have moved me emotionally. I admire Josh Grobin’s voice. After listening to him sing, I feel nothing. David is a master. When he sings…he is actually singing from within himself. His heart is in each and every song that he sings, and has an inate ability to make his audience feel the same connection. Personally speaking, I make an emotional connection with each and every song that David sings. The purity of his voice and beautiful heart are behind each and every song. He may not do that for everyone, but he certainly is the only one that has made that connection with me. You can have a great voice, but not have the heart behind it to make it feel “real”! David is the voice and the heart.

Ann Rivall, I think that’s not even your real name. Ms. Rivall, I strongly believe the reason you bashed David’s Christmas album is mainly because you are just JEALOUS, plain and simple. You must have a favorite idol of your own and unfortunately it’s not David Archuleta, you so hate him so much which led you to write this worst ever review eventhough you don’t have background in music critiquing. It’s your way Ms. Rivall to elevate your own favorite at the expense of David Archuleta. You Ms. Rivall must be a very sick person, must have a very sad childhood, you must have been abused as a child, so you came up with this very distorted idea of review. Or maybe you have a very poor hearing now as a result of your parents beating you and hitting your ears and poor comprehension as a result of your parents hitting you on your head. For God’s sake You should seek help and medication.

Don’t get CON with a FAKE MUSIC JOURNO who lacks credential - It’s just HILLARIOUS!

It’s very obvious Ann Rivall has no background in music. The way she write the review its not the way how the real professional journalist write.

Her style of writing is obviously MEDIOCRE. I LOOK BACK AGAIN WHO SHE IS AFFILIATED AND I APOLOGIZE: It’s from The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s premier independent student newspaper - DANG!

IT’S FROM A STUDENT, HELLO. I GOT CON ON THAT - MY BAD, HAHAHA !

PLEASE DON’T PATRONIZED THIS KIND OF JOURNALISTIC CRAP. I THINK SHE IS JUST A BELOW PAR AVERAGE STUDENT WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND MUSIC AND THAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

LIKE WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING YOU CAN TELL WHEN A JOURNALIST REAL OR FAKE. THIS IS ONE GOOD EXAMPLE - BULLS EYE !

To:Ann Rivall,

If you are graduating this year I would recommend you to change your major. I would definitely won’t hire you in my Newspaper Company as one of my journalist.

Your writing is just below par and I can’t believe you are from - The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s premier independent student newspaper.

Completely shock and there is no way I will hire you.

Thank You.

Yes, this is from the Nigerian Newspaper, Inc.

Ann, My commentfor your review:
1. the title you give for this critic is suited for tabloids. I don’t think a serious publication would choose such a title (and what new single? There’s no single). If you give 2 out of 5 stars, then this is not horrible, just below average or sub-par. 2. Your ideas are not cohesive and even contradictary at times, as many have pointed out. Try better organisation. 3. You want to be snarky in your tone, as seems to be what most critics do nowadays, but do it with a bit of light hearted humour and if you’re not knowledgeable enough to comment on something, don’t touch it (e.g. comparing the Prague Orchestra to beginners plunking is really off and actually makes your whole article hard to be taken seriously.)

user-pic

Excuse me but Ave Maria is Latin and Riu Riu Chiu is Spanish, goes to show how much you know. I love this album and will be listening to it for years to come and will also be enjoyed by my children and their families. David puts his whole heart and soul into every one of these songs, if you really listened to it, you would know that. I am highly recommending this album and gifting this album to many of my friends and relatives. David Archuleta is an outstanding artist and will be around to make more and more beautiful music with his voice.

user-pic

well, i’m not going use harsh words in my comment, but I do want to say something. I do believe each person has different taste in music & everything else, but why did u have to mock him??

he came up with this album becaus his fans asked him & because he is a religious person. your headline (ho ho horrible) sounds like u make fun of it, and that’s really not a good thing to do. at least u can appreciate him, because he spent hours of hours of recording & he do it for his fans, why can’t u respect it??

not to mention ur comment: “why is Archuleta already surrendering to the predicted pop-inspired holiday CD so soon after his successful self-titled debut album? Shouldn’t this cop-out be reserved for when he’s too lazy and uninventive to write or perform any new songs? Or when he’s fallen off our collective radar after the next inevitable “Idol” sensation?” which I think is very subjective and disrespectful.

so unless u’re a real jerk, i think u should apologize, only for the harsh words u use in ur comments, not for not liking it, and so does ur editor for making the headline.

user-pic

Ms. Rivall…..

…..looks like you are one of the new music critics (?) who believe their job to be one of….criticize only….does that get you points from your potty-mouthed editor? Mr. Archuleta’s album as reviewed by knowledgeable critics has been highly positive….as it should be. Yes….that is my opinion based on fifty years in the music business. May I ask for your credentials?

user-pic

Who the fuck is David Archuleta? Some child pornographer or something?

man, are you retard or something??? what happen with this world?? it’s full of stupid persons making stupid comments!!!!

Wow! Is this really a review. I even laughed at this: “Although his Spanish “Ave Maria” and Latin “Riu Riu Chiu” are well suited to his Latin heritage,..” What are you talking about? “Riu Riu Chiu” is in Spanish and “Ave Maria” is in Latin. But what caught me was when you said, “suited to his Latin heritage.” Are you kidding? David A. has a Hispanic heritage and specifically Latin American. Latin Americans are Spanish speaking and don’t speak Latin. Yes, Latin language may be the root of all European languages including Spanish. But it is so far removed from what you are trying to mean here. And another thing: “it fails to measure against other timeless Christmas duets and would have been better left untouched..” Which Christmas duets specifically, and even the song “Have yourself a merry little Christmas,” is hardly performed as a duet. The only timeless Christmas duet that has done it for me has been Natalie Cole’s studio magic with dad, Nat King Cole -“A Christmas Song.” And, imo David and Charice really delivered that it is next to that duet for me. Overall, thanks God for David’s Christmas album. Finally, a Christmas album that could bridge the young and old alike…

Ann, I really hope your cochlear implant surgery goes well. My uncle had it and his hearing has improved 100%. Good luck. And when you’re done with college, I hope you enjoy your go-nowhere job that is certainly awaiting you.

user-pic

Ann’s entitled to her opinion on the music, but her cheap shots at David were uncalled for. You can dislike a CD and not have to attack the singer. Grow up, Ann.

user-pic

Ann, your review was cruel and hurtful without any basis. The article contains no explanation for you conclusions and the title is ridiculous. I hate to see people like yourself in a position to review his work. What I hate more is that myself and others stumbled upon this article and read it. It should be thrown out with the other trash.

user-pic

Ann you tell em girl. This was your assignment to criticize, so obviously you had to go one way or the other. If you had chosen to portray the CD in a positive light, the anti-Archies might attack you too. Congrats on all the feedback, I wish it was more supportive, but some people get pleasure out of bashing those who have to put their opinions out in the open. At least you did it with elegance. Calling others “fucking retards” is just not cool. I think you are a great writer and always will be.

PLUS, no one can top Harry Connick Jr. and his christmas CD “When My Heart Finds Christmas”.

user-pic

WOW My God Ann I hope you are not a mother. This review was done in very bad taste. If you had to write about David Archuleta’s album, you could have been more tactful about it. We know not everyone loves David. But you don’t have to hate him. Just don’t listen to him. That is what I do when I don’t like singer.

user-pic

I read Dylan’s review on your newspaper too. So you would not mock Dylan for his album title which is strangely similar to David’s? So his releasing the same date as David’s before the Halloween is not worth snarking on? I mean this kind of dismissive tone for David’s album is what causes some DA fans to be angry. Why make assumptions on David’s intent of making this album when you can clearly read it in the album notes? Don’t be defensive, Ann. Re-read what you’ve written, organise your thoughts better, remove the unnecessary snark, back up your points (eg why you think the arrangements are not original because they’re copy cats of XXX’s version, etc, which other timeless Christmas duets are the ultimate ones), and there you can have a good one. And to the editor, childish review elicit childish responses. Write in a respectful tone and you get respect.

user-pic

Haha. What a joke and a waste of time. David will always be my idol. Sorry!

user-pic

Alright. Let me just start by saying this. I respect your opinion, Annie dear. I do. You have the right to say whatever you feel about this Christmas album, and, HA, well, clearly YOU didn’t like it. Now, if you don’t mind, I will give my opinion. First off, there is absolutely, NO need to bash his hard work and determination for all he’s done with this Christmas album. There is a thing called a limit, my friend, and you have definitely exceeded it in rudeness. It is utterly not necessary to say some of the derogatory things that you did. And there is NO need as well to curse at the end of this dreadful review. That was just uncalled for. Wow, you writers here at the Badger Herald paper company sure like to use profanity, huh? Great way to promote your school, my friend. I applaud you. NOT. Also, you did everything but review this. You insulted it. Flat out insulted it. Last time I checked, a review on a CD was supposed to be on its songs. You, however, plunged into making fun of this boy’s accents, basically his heritage, and his ability as a singer. UNCALLED FOR, HONEY. Do you want to make it big in this business? Then do your job. And that job is to review. NOT to make fun of. You should definitely be ashamed at the horrible things you said about David Archuleta. He worked very hard on this album and you demeaned him of that. I hope you like hatred. Because that is definitely what you’re going to get after people read what you said. Good luck in the writing business. You will definitely need it.

Have a nice day!

I am a grown woman who truly enjoys David Archuleta’s voice. I’m sorry but when I listen to Christmas songs I WANT them to sound like the original recordng. That is what holiday tradition is all about. David does this beautifully on this album. Who wants to listen to an old-fashioned Christmas song that has been changed to make it more modern? Not me! This will be an album that I can listen to for years and years to come as it celebrates the classic songs we all grew up listening to. I already have non-Archuleta fans asking me to borrow this album.

I was a huge fan of David Archuleta from the first moment I heard his voice singing “Imagine” on AI. His voice was and is magical. I saw him in concert when the AI tour came through my city , and even got to meet him and gave him a hug for free (now his fans have to shell up $200 for this privilege). After all the YouTube videos came out last year of David singing Christmas songs, many acapella, I thought it would be great to have an entire Christmas album from him.

I listened to the entire album/cd/whatever on AOL before it was released. I was so disappointed. David’s vocals are impeccable on every song, but I so hate all the overproduced, overdramatic, overlong background music. Some artists need a lot of flourishing to back up their less than perfect vocals. David isn’t one of them. The less music going on behind him, the better he sounds.

There used to be kind of a joke about DA fans, or Archies, that they have ODD, or Obsessive David Disorder. I used to think that was funny. I don’t think any of the above comments funny. I find it appalling that these people (like the commenters above me) are so rude, disrespectful and ignorant and yet profess to love David. The sad thing is that David himself is a kind, compassionate and humble person. I don’t imagine for a second that he would be proud to have these people as fans. And it’s people like them that are the most vocal, so they aren’t doing him any favors. They just make themselves look like over-the-top lunatics. The word “fan” comes from “fanatical” you know.

The bottom line is everyone has a right to their opinion. People who write reviews are called “critics” for a reason. To attack a journalist and insult them for doing their job is just plain stupid and immature and I bet most of these supposed fans are not teenagers who may not know better.

Yes, you are right you are entitled to your opinion same with the fans they are entitled to their opinion too.

The fans of David Archuleta is just protective of him. They are just very honest and bold and straight to the point and they have the right to express their opinion - for this CD is dedicated specially to his them.

I listen to David Archuleta Christmas CD Album and it is ONE OF THE BEST CHRISTMAS CD of my collection and never miss listening to it since I bought it. I love all the song and its REFRESHING especially, Have Yourself A Very Little Christmas - beautiful duet just amazing well done, Ave Maria - prepare your a tissue it gives you chill and touching, Melodies of Christmas - its simple, joyful and fun.

If you really read the article well try reading it again. Do you think this is done by a professional music journo and was it done constructively? Nah !

I hope you enjoy the cd and spread the HOLIDAY CHEER and its also good for a Christmas Gift, don’t forget.

Thank You.

hahah u r weird person …i think if u have your own album..it would be much worse than that. u r just another person who jealous of him. please accept the fact that u r not as talented as him..n u cant sing even better than him. lol…so pity u r! thats why god never give u such a talent..bcos all u knw is hating ppl. bwahahahaha

user-pic

Please just stop all this and take this article down.

user-pic

Quite harsh a review, considering so many people disagree with you. Just mean spirited. The music and vocals on this CD, which was requested by his fans, by the way, are amazing. What is this review really about? The music or the critic’s opinion of the man? How anyone could hate auch a good and moral person such as David I can’t imagine. He has done so much for his fans, charities, and is such a good role model for the youth of today. Hating someone for being a good person, just makes the hater seem like a terrible one. Turn up the music and listen again. David will make you feel the music in your soul. That is, if you have one.

user-pic

Guys really. Mixing up the languages of Riu Riu Chiu and Ave Maria really damaged the credibility of this reviewer, don’t you think? At least be accurate, in your writing, if you’re going to be so smug.

I love the CD and haven’t stopped playing it. I’m sure David will gain plenty of new fans with this album. I just want to see plenty of TV appearances in the next coming weeks, in addition to his tour. As we know, David sells himself best!

“Ignoring the obvious mock-worthy, uninspired title, this album utterly fails to accomplish what holiday music lovers yearn..”

Holiday music lovers yearn to feel the spirit of Christmas through these holiday cd’s. We aren’t just looking for a catchy hook and over the top DIVA vocalizations.

Archuleta’s cd does an amazing job in capturing the spirit of Christmas. The majority of the songs are beautifully orchestrated and Archuleta’s voice is tender and soulful throughout the cd. Just because he isn’t singing Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.. doesn’t mean that his take on these classic songs is “unoriginal” or “uninspired.”

BTW: his diction is amazing on Pat A Pan, Ave Maria and Riu Riu Chiu.

Perhaps next time you won’t try so hard to be snarky and cool and give a decent review.

user-pic

This is a really wierd review of a CD. I feel like most of the review was about me-the stupid fan. Or was it a direct attack on a certain religion? You do not know me or anything about me. Do you have preconceived ideas about Davids fans from what other writers have written? Are we as college educated as you? Have you met any of us? Just like the review of the album of which you made alot of mistakes, you have certainly no idea who his supporters are. I challenge your newspaper to attend a concert, meet this young man and his fans and then write a non-biased article again. Be careful, my dear, how you write your words. And don’t be so hateful. And to the Editor who replied in wrath, you don’t deserve to be an editor.

user-pic

Good journalism requires good research and an honest unbiased opinion. It is apparent that you have not done your research. If you did, you would have known what languages in which each song was sung. In addition, what are your credentials in regards to foreign language studies? I have sung and performed in several languages and David has an excellent ear for languages. In fact, his singing seems more impassioned when he sings in a foreign language, especially Spanish. This is a very disappointing piece of journalism and it is a shame that it was published. It is a sad statement that you feel the need to inject such cynicism into your writing to feel as if you have done your job. You have gotten so many comments because David embodies the opposite of what you have done with this piece. He represents a hope that pop culture does not have to live exclusively in a harsh, hateful, sarcastic place to succeed. Keep studying your craft. Listen to the album again and try to write a review again from an honest place. That is your job.

user-pic

The only “research” Ann failed to do was in finding out beforehand that all of Archuleta’s fans are crazy old grannies with nothing better to do with their time than harass anybody over the internet who dares to say anything even remotely critical of their idol.

Newsflash tards, reviews aren’t supposed to be obejctive. They are supposed to be written by people who can tell the difference between good music and crap music and can articulate what makes an album or song good and what makes it bad. And, quite frankly, Ann knocked it out of the park.

She didn’t even say anything that bad about him, but judging by the comments she’s recieved you’d think she accused him of being a rapist. I’m not against liking cheesy pop music (I’ve been guilty of it in the past) but there’s no reason for anyone, ANYONE, to rush to the defence of a pop artist, especially a reality show reject.

In short Archuleta fans, I know menopause is a bitch, but that doesn’t give you the right to take it out on a stranger over the internet.

user-pic

You didn’t listen to the CD, so don’t comment, you reject.

user-pic

I don’t need to go into a sewer to know it smells like shit. Same principle applies here.

user-pic

MostExcellent, perhaps you need to do some “research” yourself. Davids fan-base is very diverse covering all age groups, genders, races, religion, even no religion. Plus they come from many different parts of the world.

Yes there are many comments that got overly defensive. but the majority of comments simply stated in a civil manor why they thought the review was in bad taste. Your own name calling suggests why you have no problem with this review.

The bottom-line is everyone needs to learn how to respect, and yes that includes the fans that got carried away. If the review simply would have been written in a respectful manor regardless of the reviewers opinion it would have made all the difference.

IMO this debate has ran its course. Hopefully everyone can walk away from this having learned that just a little respect goes a long way.

user-pic

YOU ARE CRUEL AND SELFISH! you need to watch what you say about others. David archuleta wanted to create t his album as a Christmas thank you to all of his fans. You are a shameful twit who thinks they can go around and say just whatever they please. He is a very gifted singer, and you have no right to even think you can pass this off as an official review. You need to crawl back into the hole you belong in.

user-pic

Ave Maria is Spanish?

If Ann Rivall is your relative I would recommend you to have her retake Journalism 101 again.

She is giving a True Journalism a bad name and plus she is ruining the name of The University of Wisconsin.

Thank You

user-pic

ROFL! Wow, people, relax. It’s an opinion, HER opinion. While I completely disagree with her opinion (I actually liked Melodies of Christmas, it was a little bit new with old and I thought him doing Pat-A-Pan was irrevocably cute).

Journalists and reviewers are allowed to have an opinion, and this is hers. If one disagrees, buy the CD and make your own.

In other news, as an Archie fan myself, I have to say to some, if not most of you, (behaving like you got a truck instead of a train for Christmas…) GROW UP.

Peeeacceeeee.

user-pic

I love that someone is brave enough to call it as she sees it, in the face of intense fanatical opposition. This is the very essence of proper reviewing. You go girl!

user-pic

Dear Ann, don’t mind the haters, you might not be able to get a job in new york times or other top newspapers, but go work for TMZ. they need you. The University of Wisconsin should be proud of having students like you. in fact, Vote for the Worst is crowning you the writer of the year. try write something about jon & kate plus 8 next time , people really love that!

btw, Spanish “Ave Maria” and Latin “Riu Riu Chiu”. that’s a good one!

user-pic

I love that tards are falling all over themselves saying it’s hurtful and crap and that Ms. Rivall is a retard. I would think that an artist like Mr. Archuleta would appreciate honest reviews from young people who would be his peers if he were in school right now. This is the market that he would need sooner or later as his music progresses from the teen and grandmothers market (mind you, I’m not generalizing here, meaning you 20 or 30 year olds can hold back those claws. I’m just providing like a general target market which whether you belong in it or not, all artists have, but I digress). My point being, I’m sure precious dear honest Archie won’t be attacking Ms. Rivall for this review.

As for the “hurtful name-calling” Ms. Rivall supposedly employed, I saw none of it. I saw parts where she said she didn’t like the album. I saw parts where she likened some of the sounds to something else which was not particularly flattering. I also saw her praise the purity of his voice and the vastness of his range, words that have seen to flown over the heads of many commenters here.

So to the disgruntled Archie unfortunately for you, you don’t write the reviews. What you have is the power to ensure that whatever reviews the record receives, that it will be successful anyway. And for once, give those who write the reviews the benefit of the doubt and hope that whatever lessons may be gleaned from them will be used for future projects.

user-pic

Good review. I agree with you a lot, especially about the Yamaha piano track songs. It is SO cheesy! The whole thing.

user-pic

Congratulations Ann! You have shown the world that there are delusional people out there who bashed your first amendment right to free speech because the are obsessed with a child. Since they are the only people in the world who will (or did) buy the album I wouldn’t worry about a bunch of immature adults with scary child obsessions. I think your review was great and I hope you have a sussessful career. But beware - people who tard over AI contestants are wired a little differently than the rest of us and defend their idol to the end, not matter how whort their eventual career will be. Smile at the response your last review of a David A received since it will propbably be his last album anyway.

Um… to the people who are defending Rivall… not all Archuleta fans are “fat, uneducated, pathetic morons”, okay? That was uncalled for.

And… Ann, did you… like the album or not? Because the review was rather contradictory.

“For everyone else, don’t destroy a thing, except maybe his newest bargain bin-worthy album, Christmas from the Heart.”

“which delicately showcase his vast vocal range and soothing tone while also managing to stay true to the traditional essence of these songs.”

Way to go Ann Rivall. :D Best review ever. Keep them coming. And ignore the moronic posters. I loved Archie on the show, but the second he did R&B I realized he didn’t have real talent. He was just incredibly overproduced. He could probably have some talent if he weren’t so… corny. And he’s way too innocent. Mommy and Daddy aren’t getting along, and he’s just turning 18. Why doesn’t he write a relatable song with some deeper meaning? Instead of drawing pants on skirtwearing models?

XD Anyways I shouldn’t get so philosophical over something this mundane. Till next time Rivall. ;)

Looks like the scum has surfaced to the top. Is VFTW having a field trip in the short bus chasing after David the same way you accuse his fans of doing? (hypocrites much?) Most people on here are ready to give it a break, but it appears that your groupies are trying their best to keep it alive. Is traffic really that slow at your site that you now have to resort to this? You all need to go back home and watch re-runs of Star Trek for the 25th time.

Let’s protect OUR ALMA MATER to let this bad apple go. They need to go for they ruining the name of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Thank You,

Concern Student of UW-MADISON

Okay, I was going to let it go, but your comment is EVERYWHERE (and therefore freaking annoying) and doesn’t even make sense. If you truly are a student of the university, gosh, they’re probably really embarrassed about you.

Also? It should be ConcernED Student of UW-Madison. How about you retake Middle School grammar? Thanks.

Again, opinions are just that and does not reflect the body in which it is representing, unless an official statement is made. Considering it was a review, this was made blatantly clear.

Ok seriously, this comment IS freaking everywhere and it only gets more annoying every time it pops up.

Do you really expect people to write a letter to the university demanding the expulsion of Ms. Rivall?!? Even if the university is mailed tens of thousands of those letters NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. Why, you might ask?

1: The address you’ve given multiple times is the address of the Badger Herald so no university administrator would see even one letter.

2: While the Badger Herald is a newspaper run by students of UW-Madison it is put out completely independent from the university and therefore not subjected to any form of university control or censorship. Even if it was….

3: First amendment. ‘nuff said.

Stop this ridiculous comment, you’re not helping the David Archuleta fans look any more intelligent. Kthxbye.

user-pic

Ms Rival, With all due respect, I srongly feel you should make an appointment with an Audiologist as soon as possible. Apparently there is a problem with your hearing. It’s a shame that some people are so motivated by their own arrogance that they cant see the truth or dont want to see the truth. I sincerely think you should try another field as you are much to imature for reporting.

user-pic

It is rather ridiculous that people have been commenting such hateful remarks to an obviously opinionated article. It is a REVIEW for gosh sakes. Get over yourselves.

You may not agree with what Ann Rivall has to say, but consider these points:

1) There is a way to state your opinion (like Rivall herself did) without being blatantly judgmental towards individuals for reasons not supported by some semblance of evidence. [I fear that a few people who commented might have to look up some of these words. Good luck to you.]

2) Just because you don’t agree does NOT make her opinion WRONG. It is just that - an OPINION. They differ between individuals….that is, essentially, its definition.

Finally, last but certainly not least:

3) If you disagree with Rivall’s (or any of our writers’) opinions/reviews/articles, do NOT assume that everyone at the Badger Herald are involved in said writer’s decisions. I think it should be noted that it is a student newspaper, and especially within the ARTS section, there are strong opinions flying around. However, we try to maintain objectivity when necessary (i.e. for things OTHER THAN REVIEWS). I for on think we do a darn good job. [Hey guys - that was an opinion. Get the idea?]

That is all, folks. Please at least think before you comment. Thanks!

user-pic

I think I speak for many David fans when I say that we don’t assume that every writer at the Badger Herald stinks as a result of this review. I’m sure you have many talented writers in your program. I’m sure that some of them may even find this review and blog a bit embarrassing themselves. In return it also should not be assumed that all of Davids fans are so rude and defensive. David has over 250,000 followers on Twitter alone, not to mention the many websites dedicated to him, plus he has many casual fans who don’t participate in either. Point being if all of his fans were as crazy as suggested you would have literally hundreds of thousands of comments.

I realize that blame is to be placed on both sides of the coin. It would honestly be in everyone’s best interest if both the review and blog were removed from your site thus putting an immediate end to the mess this has turned into.

user-pic

I feel bad for the person who wrote this. I mean really your life sucks so much that you need to try and hurt other people in order to get a sense of accomplishment out of the day. Pathetic. Pick a different career because you suck at this one.

user-pic

please don’t hurt poor archie! archie is such a great singer and so honest you shouldnt bash him

user-pic

Ok…I am a student at UW Madison…and I read the Herald all the time…first off, the point of the student newspaper is to allow students to get involved in something new, something they’re passionate about…they ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS!!! So…there is really no need to bash this poor girl like this! And, furthermore, these reviews are opinion-based and just because you self-deemed “Archies” don’t agree, and have nothing better to do, does not mean you need to attack someone elses’ FREE OPINION!!! Do you write for the Badger Herald? Um…no!…do you even go to college? Probably not…if your wasting your time bashing a review from the newspaper!…and “Concerned Student” (if you really are a student here…) you are PSYCHO! You really think any respected faculty member at this University is going to give a shit about this?! Or if they would give your dumb ass…and your “followers” the time of day?! NO SHOT! Go get a life please!…or you crazy Archies can just go spend your days lurking around Archuleta’s house…or maybe following him to the grocery store…it might be more worth your time…YOU ARE ALL CRAZY!!!

user-pic

since when did it become so wrong to write your opinion about something? all you archuleta fans need to get over yourselves and stop being hypocrites. you’re critizing a person for crizing a person. wow, thats really mature.

user-pic

I for one feel this review was absolutely halarious. The only thing funnier than the review itself, is the overreaction from the people reading it. All of you fail to realize that this is only one persons opinion, and she has every right in the world to express it. Actualy, I agree with her on several of the points she made. Not only do I feel this girl is a very talented writer, but that I hope I see more of her work in months to come. All of you “Archies” are the people who need to get a life. Swarming to the defense of a pop singer that you do not know personaly in any way, shape, or form, is pathetic. Honestly…

user-pic

What I find interesting is that even the so called intellectual people/student body defending Ms. Rivall have found a way to bash David Archuleta fans in the same immature manner in which they, themselves, have commmented on this review. And I am loving those who say to “stop attacking Ms. Rivall’s opinion!” First of all, if you give it, you must take it also. Furthermore, what did you expect from a fanbase that starts at age 8 and goes to age 80? Civility?? I’m sure the most crazy of comments match the age group. In my opinion, I thought the review was out of line. I just think there is a more professional, journalistic approach to criticizing an artists album.

user-pic

Thank you.

I wonder what makes you, Ann Rivall an authority on what Christmas music lovers yearn for in a Christmas album. Are we (the readers) supposed to take it on faith that you know what they want?

BTW, this Christmas album was made as a gift from David for all of David Archuleta’s devoted if somewhat overzealous fanbase.

I do respect your right to your opinion but like most things on the Internet, it doesn’t amount to much. Each individual listener will take what they can from this album and make their own assessment of it. I’m guessing many more people will like it more than you do.

I’m sorry but I have to say that It is really a shame that you, for whatever reason have chosen to be rude, cite incorrect information, and state many untruths in your review about David’s Christmas album. This was not just your “opinion”, it was obviously an attempt to discredit the effort of his new album and bring attention to your review with all it’s inaccuracies and get yourself some credit. Well unfortunately for you, you failed miserably. Nobody respects a reviewer who thrashes out unintelligent and ridiculous words and calls it a review. David’s Christmas album is not a cop out! Since when is beautiful, heartfelt music a cop out?? It is a work of art produced with much hard work, sincere effort, loving dedication to his craft and his fans and to people all over the world. It is a true gift from an amazing and extremely gifted young artist. His fans wanted and requested the album and if anyone can interpret Christmas music beautifully and with true heartfelt meaning it is David and he has done just that. Out of all the Christmas albums I possess, David’s is at the top of my list. If you were honest and really did listen to the whole album you would realize that David’s gorgeous voice touches the listener’s heart and soul. It was a heartfelt, sincere effort from David to touch the listeners and help them to feel the true spirit of Christmas, whatever their personal belief. David has succeeded brilliantly! You unfortunately, dear reviewer have missed the point entirely. You don’t have to like every song, although I feel they are all incredibly sung and interpreted beautifully by David, but your lack of respect and rude comments about him were totally uncalled for and completely unprofessional. You have a lot to learn in the business and I understand that you are probably young but the truth is….you could learn a lot from this incredibly gifted, kind, humble, non-judgmental and wonderful artist and human being named David Archuleta.

My daughter told me that a bunch of hooligans were attacking a college student over a review of a former Idol contestant. I seriously didn’t believe her until she sent me the website address.

The bad behavior shown by these fans is just one of the most bizarre things I have ever witnessed. You should all be ashamed of yourself! I thought cyber-bullying was against the law?

I must say, way to go Ann. It’s good to hear someone’s honest opinion in a well-written piece like this. David Archuletta obviously has a one of a kind fanbase, some of these posts are ridiculous. looking forward to reading your next review

I liked this review. Yes, she wasn’t all that impressed with dear Archie. But she it wasn’t as if she wrote some scathing article that tarnishes Archie’s past accomplishments.

The only thing I see here deserving of contempt is the behavior of the Archie fans. And their grammar. Good lord, learn some manners and try taking some English classes.

Ann, you keep doing what you’re doing. I thought it was a lovely review, even if I didn’t quite agree with every little word.

user-pic

It is kinda creepy that he is a Mormon. Pass it on

user-pic

Its a review, I don’t see the need for everyone to get upset. You cant win them all and its pointless and maybe even counter productive to cut back at Ann. I’m a huge Archuleta fan, but I don’t think anyone needs to get upset about one review.

user-pic

i think you meant “well suited to his Latino heritage” - not latin heritage.

user-pic

no, she meant latin heritage.

user-pic

“OH dear”… “I’m just amazed” … “I’m just appalled at the comments.” …”How can a fanbase be so immature.” blah blah blah!!!! There are always quite a few bad seeds in any group of people everyone. I can’t believe some of you telling Archuleta fans to keep quiet. What did you think they would do in response to this? Try criticizing the Jonas Brothers and see what happens!!! It’d would be no different and a whole lot worse let me tell you.

user-pic

I’m not all that thrilled over the album, either, as much as I love David.

And to be fair, the reviewer said a couple of the songs are good.

user-pic

you are truly a gifted and professional writer with a great ear for music and an intelligent choice of words. What do you expect from a Christmas album, hard metal, guitar riffs, screams and banging drums? Do you even know how MUSIC has different genres? and you ask your editor to write an “open letter” in defense of your HO-Ho-HORRIBLE review. what a coward you are! you wrote a review without even recognizing how powerful a fanbase can fire back. shame on you. Do you think that by writing a review not worthy of the music you are reviewing (if you even listened at all, which clearly, you didn’t!) your career as an aspiring journalist will move forward? BRACE YOURSELF for responses that you will not be able to handle. And you CANNOT even handle them as early as now. College student, eh? I doubt you could make a living out of reviewing music. Listen to it again, feel guilty, cry then run and go hide under you editor’s arms.

user-pic

You’ll never work for Entertainment Weekly, so please quit trying to imitate their pity style. It’s not happening. Not in this lifetime.

The album is fine. Not the best I’ve ever heard, but quite nice. David’s voice is very rich and resonant for his young age. He’s a remarkable talent.

user-pic

If you’re really a David Archuleta fan, you won’t leave a rude comment in response to someone else’s opinion.

I liked the album, and David worked hard on it…you could think about the work someone put into this before you write nasty things….

user-pic

To one Badger Herald writer to another,

Great Review. I don’t know squat about David Archuleta. perhaps i haven’t been seduced by his boyish charm to be offended at an honest and well worded critque of his music. don’t listen to any this. great job and keep it up.

user-pic

From one Badger Herald writer to another,

Great review. I don’t know anything about Archuleta. Perhaps this is why i just read an unbiased well-worded critique. Don’t listen to any of these people and keep up the great work.

user-pic

if u said u don’t know anything about archuleta then obviously u don’t know what he was talking about. How can u think it’s a great review??? come on man, use your brain once in a while, don’t just open your mouth without thinking, that’s stupid.

user-pic

200!

user-pic

This is a great review; there’s definitely nothing wrong with adding your voice to an article. I know for a fact that if she hadn’t written this, someone else would have been forced to write the review, and they might not have been as forgiving. Congratulations on being a talented writer.

user-pic

What? terrible choice of words imo. Have it another listen, very poor journalistic style even if it’s just an opinion. No need to bash the fans or the ARTIST and the HARD WORK he has put into it. Have you not considered the fact that it is the world famous CITY OF PRAGUE Orchestra that you refer to as a yamaha keyboard. I bet you are embarrased to have learned that. If you do not know how to review music, it may be best to simply quit your school paper (becuse honey, you bring much shame to it) and probably apply for TMZ if that floats your boat.

user-pic

holy shit these tards came out of the woodwork for this one. idol message boards mobilize!

David would probably sound better if he took the c ock out of his mouth while he sang …

user-pic

wow, is your mother a prostitute or something? your word is very inappropriate and uneducated, who raised you man???

user-pic

Ann Revall is completely right. “Gaspy” Archuleta sucks bigtime. Ann, don’t mind these fat heifers coming on here to insult you. They are just mad that their ‘object of lust’ won’t ever see them standing, for being the 400 pound plus fat heifers that they are.

Archuleta SUCKS ASS!

user-pic

Archuleta S-U-K-K-S bigtime.

This review is far too mild. My pet badger sings better than gaspy does.

Hello,

Hi, I’m currently studying English Literature where I spent most of my life reading and writing reviews. And I have to say, your reviews are as sharp and well-written as the New York Times, WashingtonPost etc. Great job! It is unfortunate that possessed preperbuscent girls are flaming you because you tarnished their Gatsbysque conception of Archuleta but then, too bad for them then.

Love ya!

Phil.

IT’S LIKE D U M B A N D D U M B E R !

user-pic

Nope, studying English Lit doesnt make me a journalist, it trains us to become art critics, since we’re being exposed to reviews and criticisms from all mediums, ranging from magazine reviews of novels to essays written by established professors. And I’m commenting the high quality of analysis and appropriate use of humor in this article, matched up to the standards of many other national newspapers.

But seriously this is getting tiresome. Here’s something we learn at political science. Singapore literary icon Catherine Lim once noted that “It is surely one of democracy’s most thrilling paradoxes that while you may passionately disagree with another’s views, you are expected, with the same passion, to defend his right to them.” It is not fair that Ann is punished for voicing her opinions on David’s album because you don’t agree with her. It was a shocking case of blatant disrespect, rudeness and in many ways; resembles a fanatical terrorist attack without the religious components.

user-pic

People need to relax, and respect the writer’s opinion. Jesus H. Christ, stop mauling the poor woman with your hateful comments.

ANGELS! ANGELS! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! STOP POSTING IN HERE NOW.

IF YOU CAME HERE TO POST A COMMENT AS A FAN of DAVID’S, DON’T DO IT.

As David’s support we are close enough to him tO know his style, but not only us, the industry as well. Forgetting all the rude comments on David’s so called gaspyness…David isn’t naive about his breathing problem, so those wishing to inflict harm with words won’t this time. David is the most honest person even with himself.

And even with his so called “gaspyness”, Billboard still declares “David Archuleta, the voice of a new generation”.

David doesn’t need validation by a mediocre college tabloid. And for those of us who know what David Archuleta is truly about, we get this album and that’s why we came down on the review and the “Hand picked” reviewer. David Archuleta is over the head of people like the reviewer. And for those green-eyed commenter who don’t have the guts to stand before David’s face and say the things they say, let the hide behind the name “ANONYMOUS”. (cont)

user-pic

(cont) It took me only minutes to reg and support David as maxie2go. My name and my trademark “Palm to Heart” is uniform so if one isn’t up the other always is. This album is wonderfully mastered by well known ppl in the industry. The intent of the review has only served to to do just the opposite.

ANGELS, THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO IS CAUSE THE PUBLIC TO BECOME SO ANGERED BY SUCH A DISPLAY AS THIS THAT THEY TURN ON DAVID. YOU WOULD NEVER FORGIVE YOURSELF.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! NO MORE COMMENTS FROM DAVID ARCHULETA FANS PLEASE. NO MORE. SUPPORT HIM THROUGH A REPUTABLE REVIEW LIKE THAT OF MASTERCLASSLADY.COM’S; there you’ll get a song by song review of each track.

A N G E L S - P L E A S E - R E A D - F I R S T !

It’s too late Palm to Heart.

The “angels” (Ironic much?) have already distinguished themselves to be insecure, vicious, mauling bullies who attacked a respectable reviewer who’s just doing her job. I say that the public has already turned against you guys. :)

Phil Bay, bs etc. Thanks for being the voice of rationality is this otherwise pitiful wasteland of hollow voices. (haha, phil. This literary allusion is directed at you. :D)

Ms Rivall, Sorry to dissapoint you but here is what people really feel about David’s new album:

David Archuleta Christmas From the Heart # 30 on Billboard 200With only one week on the charts, David Archuleta’s, Christmas From the Heart CD debuts at number 30 position on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums, (number two in Holiday Albums) which is quite respectable for his second CD offering and shows the same sales rank (30) on the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon.com where he also garners an impressive 72, five-star reviews

Note that all of Ann’s supporters are intellectuals, while all the flamers can’t spell. What do you guys infer?

user-pic

THIS IS THE DUMBEST REVIEW I HAVE READ ABOUT DAVID’S ALBUM. YOU KNOW IT ONLY SHOWS HOW MUCH YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT GOOD MUSIC! DAVID;’S ALBUM IS AMAZING AND IS GREAT THAT HE TRIED TO SPEAK OTHER LANGUAGES. DON’T BE JEALOUS OK BECAUSE DAVID IS GREAT JUST ACCEPT IT!!! DAVID ARCHULETA IS THE BESTEST…..!!!!!

user-pic

hahahahaha, Wow, I can’t believe how hateful the comments are in here. The writer is just giving her own opinion/review of the CD, a right which she is entitled to. David will have detractors, it’s a fact of life. YOu can disagree with the writer without making personal attacks/insults.

Since when did this writer’s opinion matter anyway? Just sayin’…

user-pic

This article is just about the most sensible thing I’ve read on David yet, but I must say the comments are just hilarious! It boggles my mind to think that people are so damn defensive of someone who couldn’t even win an overblown karaoke contest, not to mention still being so defensive even a year and a half later! Have you archtards lost your minds!? LOL get a freakin’ grip!

user-pic

I wonder if the reason people are so upset here is because they feel like any criticism of Archuleta’s music is a criticism of Archuleta himself and by extension a criticism of mormonism. Everyone needs to relax, this about the music, not your religion.
