Beneath the blood, guts and gore involved in the successful haunted house, the Saddle and Sirloin Haunted House is all about charity.
Once again this year, proceeds from this haunted house, presented by students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, a charity dedicated to alleviating and ending hunger. Ever since the haunted house was founded in the ’90s, donations to this charity have been constant.
“It’s been a tradition to keep it going,” said Kristin Raymond, the haunted house co-chair and animal science major at the University of Wisconsin.
Last year alone, Raymond said the group raised over 100 pounds of food and about $200. Considering admission to the haunted house is only $1 or a canned good, Raymond agreed that this was an impressive feat. But this is only a product of hard work on behalf of the members, who will each spend about 15 to 20 hours to create and run the haunted house.
Currently, exact plans for the haunted house are rough, but Raymond expressed excitement at some of the new features of this year’s event.
“We definitely have a butcher room that will be really creepy,” she said. “And we’re attempting to get things from the meat labs like hooks and stuff.”
The Saddle and Sirloin Haunted House will be located in Old Horse Barn located at 520 Elm Dr. and will run from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 and Friday, Oct. 31. Admission is $1 or a non-perishable food item.
