DMX, one of the most popular rappers of the last 10 years, is coming to the Orpheum Theatre Thursday for one of two concerts working to benefit Children Uniting Nations.

Based in Los Angeles, Children Uniting Nations is a non-profit organization that helps deprived or at-risk children by providing them with mentors. According to Robert Slaughter of CUN, the organization’s main goal is “giving those kids a voice.”

“They’re often overlooked and they don’t have organizations looking out for them,” Slaughter said. “Everyone is a parent to them, and we have to look out for them.”

One way this organization reaches out to at-risk children is through Dodger Day, an annual event hosted at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles that provides the organization with publicity, raised awareness and a way to reward both the children and mentors for their participation. CUN also hosts Day of the Child, a fundraising fair with games and even live music held in New York.

But Slaughter added that CUN is “always looking to branch out to other cities” and is currently opening an office in New York in addition to their Los Angeles office. Internationally, Children Uniting Nations Asia is working on creating a “village” for more than 1,000 girls in Beijing. This village will be a safe haven aimed at taking children off the streets. Similarly, they are planning a “campus” in south-central Los Angeles with “dorm-style living” for impoverished children here in the United States.

But despite all this progress, Slaughter said the organization hasn’t forgotten its beginnings.

“We are thankful for the opportunities that come up through connections that have been made,” Slaughter said. “We’re appreciative about how the concert came about. We have worked with DMX in the past.”

DMX exploded on the popular hip-hop scene in 1998 with his freshman album, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot, propelled by the single “Ruff Ryders Anthem,” produced by Swizz Beats. Famously debuting his first five albums at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, DMX is currently working his first Bodog Records release, a pair of albums to be released on the same day.

Walk With Me Now and You’ll Fly With Me Later are going to be sold separately as a traditional hardcore hip-hop record and a gospel-rap record. The gospel-rap sound on You’ll Fly With Me Later is not a new direction for DMX, considering there are gospel-influenced songs on his previous records, but this will be his first all-gospel album. Working again with close friend and producer Swizz Beats, DMX aims to recreate the success of his earlier albums — a daunting task in light of the current record sales slump.

DMX is performing Thursday, April 10, at the Orpheum Theatre at 10 p.m. Local favorite DJ Ko is opening. Tickets cost $25.
