July marked the opening of the much awaited "Transformers" film, and its $70 million opening weekend made it clear that this throwback film would be one of 2007's guilty pleasures. Initially, its previews gave a bleak outlook on the film, and it appeared it would only appeal to adolescent boys and those nostalgic for the '80s. However, despite its lackluster script and incoherent plot, the movie's impressive special effects, titillating car chases and leading male Shia LaBeouf's quirky, self-deprecating charm helped "Transformers" leave viewers thoroughly satisfied, with the sudden urge to turn 180s in the movie theatre's parking lot.

5th Potter movie darkest yet

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the much anticipated fifth film installment based on J.K. Rowling's book series, debuted July 11 to throngs of loyal Muggles decked in wizard garb. Widely considered the darkest of the Potter films, "The Order of the Phoenix" follows an increasingly sullen and hormonal 15-year-old Harry as he and his comrades rebel against the Ministry of Magic, which has instated a magical equivalent of the No Child Left Behind Act. Actor Daniel Radcliffe again plays Harry, giving a sensitive and chilling portrayal of the boy wizard as his struggle with the dark force growing inside him begins. As always, the film's special effects leave nothing to be desired —- the Hogwarts' interior begs the camera to linger and allow the viewer to absorb the building's fantastical intricacies. Now that Rowling has brought the book series to a close, Potter fans must simply grit their teeth, reanalyze and patiently await the next film, coming late 2008.

Summer music in Madison

The city of Madison has much to offer in terms of free outdoor entertainment. Continuing throughout the summer, the Memorial Union Terrace's "Hot Summer Nights" features free outdoor concerts held on the union's large back patio facing the beautiful Lake Mendota. Sit back, relish in the Terrace's cooling breeze and relaxing view, and take in the sounds of indie rock outfit Cloud Cult or one of the many bands performing in the Terrace Blues Fest. For those with more refined musical tastes, or those searching for a risk-free introduction to the world of classical music, the Concerts on the Square are worth checking out. Here, on Wednesday nights from June through August, you can enjoy free concerts from the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Sample food from vendors representing some of the area's best restaurants, stretch out on a blanket and enjoy a fine Madison tradition.
