When you find yourself asking, “Where’s the party at?” tonight, look no further than Luther’s Blues (located at 401 University Ave.), where the intergalactic high energy funk machine of the next dimension, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, will be letting loose.
The sax-driven sextet combines infectious funk, hip-hop, blues, rhythm and jazz that create a potent high-octane fusion capable of swallowing you whole. Led by vocalist, sax and flute man Karl Denson, the group has been at work since 1998. With guitarist Brian Jordan, bassist Ron Johnson, David Veith on keyboards, Chris Littlefield on trumpet and drummer John Staten, the band boasts an impressive lineup that leaves little reason to wonder how they’ve earned the reputation as “kings of the unstoppable all-night show.”
The band released The Bridge in 2002, the first and only studio effort so far by the current incarnation of the Tiny Universe. The multi-faceted album shows off the band’s uncanny ability to groove, as well as a great deal of honed musical talent and massive versatility. From R&B to afrobeat, spoken word to psychedelic jazz, fusion to straight up funk, the band transcends influences such as James Brown and Curtis Mayfield with songs such as “Because of Her Beauty,” “The Answer” and “Check Out Your Mind.”
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe last played in Madison right before this year’s Halloween festivities, October 30th, 2003 at the Barrymore Theater. In a smaller venue like Luther’s this time around, the Tiny Universe will sure to be relentless. Come join the party.
