Web and Online Content
The web associate works with the web director to develop badgerherald.com. The associate will be responsible for ensuring accurate posting of News, Opinion, Sports and ArtsEtc. stories online five nights biweekly. Typical hours are from 11 p.m. until the entire paper is sent to the printer, generally around 2 a.m. Flexibility is crucial for this salaried position.
Over winter break, we will be preparing to redesign the website and make many significant improvements. The associate will aid in design and programming, so applicants should have some web design and programming experience. Knowledge of HTML and CSS are crucial. Applicants with PHP and MySQL experience preferred. Familiarity with “Web 2.0” principles and AJAX would be ideal.
We’re especially interested in students who have a few years before graduation and could be promoted to web director after two successful semesters.
Applicants who are unsure if they are qualified are still encouraged to apply.
The online content editors oversee video production. Each editor receives a biweekly salary and is responsible for at least two videos weekly. We have volunteer video reporters to take some stories, but the editors must be prepared to do everything themselves if other help is unavailable.
Experience with the news media and writing would be extremely beneficial, and applicants should have some proficiency with video capturing and editing. Flexibility is crucial for this position.
We’re looking for videographers interested in capturing local events, conducting field interviews and editing the video to produce online news pieces to be featured on this website. This is an unpaid position, but multimedia experience is becoming crucial for success in many media related fields. This is an opportunity to put your skills to work on something meaningful to many students on campus.
We’re also seeking multimedia developers to create interactive Flash, Java or PHP applications and other online content. Instead of futzing around on random projects in your dorm room, put your knowledge to use and create informative and fun web applications thousands will see. This is not a paid position, but the experience will look great on your résumé, and best of all, you’ll be welcome to free beer and pizza at our all-staff meetings!
To apply, download an application and return it to the web director, Charlie Gorichanaz, either in person or by e-mail. The Badger Herald offices are located at 326 W. Gorham St. in Madison, two doors down from Silver Mine Subs. Please e-mail if you have any questions or concerns.
